I'm so excited that I just have to share! We just doubled our flock! From 5 to 10!

My husband just picked up 5 ameracaunas - 4 hens and a rooster. This is our first rooster so any advice would be much appreciated! I can't wait to start getting those beautiful Easter eggs!

Are you going to hatch out your own chicks? Just wondering about the rooster. We bought straight run the first time and ended up with three roosters until the first one spurred our son. We got rid of him. Eventually each one went but we did hatch out twice.
This time we got 25 girls and no roosters since we are not planning to hatch any this time.
We got the Black Star so all our eggs will be brown. I would like to get another kind some time to get some pretty eggs!

Not planning on hatching any at this point in time. He better be a nice guy or its bye bye birdy!

It was kind of a package deal to get this group of chickens so we just took him.

Get a spray water bottle or water gun, keep it handy, as soon as, any bad behavior starts squirt him in the face, and yell "No". I have 9 straight run roosters, that have learned when they see the spray bottle to run away and "No" makes them stop, gives you time to spray them, a water hose works better, but you can't carry that around easily. All of those guys are headed for slaughter with the first cold snap. I have had three Americana roosters over they years, they have all been gentlemen, and very docile with me and their hens, but have fought others, ducks and geese, who got too close and one of my boys even chased off a hawk once. Good luck.
