We noticed these critters this year flying around our flowers that we had never seen before. We didn't know what they were and started searching the web for what they might be. Surprisingly enough, I found the answer in a recent Martha Stewart Living magazine!! So, can you identify this mystery pollinator? I tried to post photos that showed all of its features that will help identify it, including that interesting rudder-like tail.

That is called the Hummingbrd Spinx moth. The tomato hornworms that many people terminate in their garden... that is what these beautiful creatures come from. I do not kill them but move them around the garden so they do not eat too much of one plant. If it gets out of hand I move them out to the pasture. I think they are so cool and almost fairy like.
Super nice photo of them!!!

Linda, Yes indeed! And interesting enough, we haven't noticed any damage to our tomatoes this year from the caterpillars! Also interesting we found is that this is the only moth that is active during the daylight hours!

We have them too. They look and sound like mini hummers. Audrey caught one in her butterfly jar the other day. She released it before it got dark. I think they are cute.
