Here's a crazy question...we need help for a lonely pig. We had 3 pigs that my son showed in 4-H, we sold 2 and kept 1 that we brought home to sell for breeding or take to the state fair. Since coming home, see is depressed & lonely. She doesn't eat much & when we get her out she goes to their pin & stands there looking. We go out to her many times a day, have a radio playing, & give her treats but she is moping around & it's just pitiful. I would love any suggestions we can get to try to pull her out of this. Our son would love to be able to show her in the state fair next week, but if she keeps up this pace it will stress her out too much to load her & take her there.

I have never heard of pigs mopping like this. It sounds like you've already done everything I would think of (radio, visits). Have you tried walking her around outside or moving her pen? Maybe a change of scenery would help?? I wish I could help - I'd hate for your son to miss the state fair! Best of luck to you. Heather

well, we are slowly perking up Rowdy. We got her a roommate until she is back on track. lol I think it's too late for her to be in her prime for the state fair though. Lesson learned for next year! Beth |

Beth, I just saw this thread. I was going to suggest another animal to keep her company as animals are usually social so it is nice when you can have more than one in together. Glad she is perking up again. Sorry about the fair though.

My neighbor across the road lost one of her two pigs to illness last weekend. She was deeply concerned about her remaining pig who was in great health becoming lonely and depressed. We moved two of my sheep into the paddock the pig was in, so she would have some company. So far it has worked well.

I am new to pigs and from everything that we have read it seems that pigs are herders and love company. We got our first pig a Large Black heritage hog about a month ago and he is doing great. We will be getting the Large Black Gilt towards the middle of September so about a week and a half ago we picked up another pig for company for him a Hampshire/Red Duroc and now he is doing even better.
We took this photo this morning :)

Sharon, you are fine and I love the picture. Thankfully, we are still doing good. I love 4-H time when we have our pigs. We have goats & chickens too, but the pigs are my favorite...they are almost like a dog except stinkier. lol Thanks everyone for the advice.

I'm glad that they are doing well Beth. This is our first time with livestock and I am loving it! I can't believe how much fun pigs are, they are so much like a dog (but stinkier :))
