My local power company acquires energy from a lot of different sources, and I've been researching these quite a bit lately. My church just installed several solar panels on the roof to support renewable energy and worked with the local power company to do an energy audit fundraiser where parishioners scheduled free energy audits of their homes and the company donated $25 to the church for each audit. It was a win win and provided me with an opportunity to really look at the energy sources and how sustainable they really are. The movie "Promised Land" brought some of the issues surrounding coal and gas into the open. The debate about the safety of nuclear power is still being debated long after the explosion at Fukushima in Japan. Hydroelectric is probably the most sustainable of the "traditional" sources of energy, but even that requires the use of coal power to produce. Thankfully, many energy companies are allowing the option to include renewable energy sources into customers' water bill. These include wind, solar, and biopower, as well as landfill gasses. Each has pros and cons. Which one is right will depend on the person and the location. It can feel overwhelming when there are so many choices and no clear solutions. However, I have hope that we can continue to move toward renewable energy sources.

I would love to have a home powered by geothermal and solar energy. But that's not an option for me cause I can't afford either one. So I keep paying for energy that comes mainly from coal. I hate what mining for coal does to the environment, not to mention that the coal industry is responsible for lots of sickness and premature deaths. Big coal has deep pockets and that's all the politicians care about.
