Hello fellow farmgirls!

I have read some farmgirly* books lately but am looking for more titles! I prefer non-fiction memoir types but am open to good fiction if it is very farmgirly!

Here are the books I've enjoyed recently (In case you all are looking for some good reads):

Sylvia's Farm
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
The Dirty Life
Made From Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life

Please feel free to post here with suggestions and I will check back.

~Rachell

* farmgirly = anything to do with someone trying their hand at gardening, animal raising, traditional skills, living closer to the land, etc.

Rachell, I think your choice of books is intriguing. I am going to check out a few of those too, and check back to see what others are reading. Thanks so much

I agree that 2 of my favorites are on your list:
Made from Scratch and A Dirty Life.

I also recommend:
Barnheart which is by Jenna Woginrich-
(same author as Made from Scratch)
AND
"The Gift of an Ordinary Day" by Katrina Kenison
Two excellent books!

Cant wait to see what the other farmgirls recommend- I too enjoy "farmgirl" type books!
Hugs,

The book called Little Heathens by Mildred Armstrong Kalish is a very good book. It's a memoir of a woman's childhood growing up in Iowa during the Great Depression. I highly recommend the book.

Great post! I've read and loved two of the books you mention, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle", and also "The Dirty Life". Since summer, I read "Why I Left the Amish" by Saloma Furlong Miller. I met the author at our library when she spoke on the book. I found it to be a quick read, kind of sad. On my Nook, I like "Homesteading" by Abigail R. Gehring. I saw it on the Barnes and Noble clearance rack in hardcover for $10, but got it on the Nook for $1.00. Just bought "A Small Furry Prayer" by Steven Kotler about dog rescue, although I haven't opened it yet. And on my nightstand: "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens".
Can't wait to see other farmgirls' reads.

Oh, and my daughter and I read "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder this summer. Pure farmgirl reading at its best!

Just started the book "The Dogs of Bedlam Farm" by John Katz. Its about a man who decides to live the "farm" life with sheep, his 3 border collies and a donkey. If you are a dog lover, you will definately like this book.
So far I am enjoying it- takes place in upstate New York, and is definately "farmgirly" reading.
Has anyone else read this?

I recently read "The Feast Nearby" by Robin Mathers. I actually think I heard about it in a MJF issue. Anyway I really liked it, it's about a woman who moves to the country after a divorce and tries to live on $40 a week. It's also got a whole lot of recipes in it.

Favorites on my farmgirl bookshelf are:

All the Foxfire books (loads of sage advice in these)

Simple Living by Wanda Urbanski

The Growing Edge - Books 1 and 2

The Year At Maple Hill Farm by Alice and Martin Provensen (This is an old children's picture book, first published in 1978. It's a delightful book with beautiful illustrations and it is very educational.)

I try to always have the latest Almanac, whether it be Blum's or The Old Farmer's.

I've read both of Jenna Woginrich books, very inspiring stories of her journey to become a farmer. Her passion for her animals and her love for music wanted you be there with her. I couldn't put them down and wanted more. Visiting her blog at Cold Antler Farm just contines the journey for me and I always look forward to her posts!
What amazes me the most is she is a young women with such determination!

Great suggestions, farm sisters! My list sure is growing! Thank you!

Here is the one I am just finishing up: Homestead Adventures: A Guide for Doers and Dreamers http://www.amazon.com/Homesteading-Adventures-Guide-Doers-Dreamers/dp/0965203611

It's got some good information in it and I enjoy all of that but the sometimes argumentative conversational style gets a bit annoying from time to time. You have to read it to see what I mean.

My youngest boy, age 10 and I are also reading The Little House series. We are currently in Farmer Boy. I HIGHLY recommend this series for farmgirls with kids (girls OR boys)!

I recently finished two really good books - "Sheepish" and "Hit by a Farm", both by Catherine Friend. I LOVED them! I had read another one of her books, "The Compassionate Carnivore" a few years back - I really liked it, but I like these two even better.

The book I started about three days ago is called "Five Acres and Independence" by M.G. Kains. It is a informative read on owning a small farm and such.

Three authors from my part of the country - North Central Ohio - anything by Gene Logdson (Upper Sandusky), the farming books by Louis Bromfield (Southern Richland county), and specifically for farmgirls - three books by Patricia Leimbach (near Cleveland, you will have to buy them used as they are out of print)

I am wondering if anyone would be up for a FarmGirly book swap. You all have such good suggestions I am wondering if you keep your books when you are done reading them or just get them from the library like I do. I have not started any new books yet, but now I have a whole list to work from! Thanks you guys!

The Elm Creek Quilts series by Jennifer Chiaverini is wonderful! There are several of them, and they're warm and comforting. If you don't currently quilt, you'll want to after reading the books! They are great to read when you find yourself needing some extra arms to hold you.

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is my all time favorite! IDK if it counts as Farmgirly per se, but it is about a woman who gardens and cooks with flowers. There's a little bit of magic in perfectly every day things and I love that about it. The School of Essential Ingredients was like that too!

The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews was lovely, not farmy I suppose but it was about a woman fixing up an old house on her own.

I'm so glad to have found a few new titles in this thread! I'll be sure to check some out. Home to Woefield by Susan Juby is on my list of to read books.
