What do you plant in the Fall and do you get seeds from a catalog/store/friend???
I always plant a Spring/Summer garden, but trying to organize myself to get somewhat of a FALL Garden,if possible. Not sure what to do and need ideas.
This is what I want to plant:
Kale
Peas
Peppers, Purple Beauty
Peppers, Jalapeno
Beans
Spinach
Herbs
Sweet Marjoram
Chamomile
Catnip
Basil
Chives
(btw...I live in Chesapeake, VA....so first frost is like December).

Hi Peg-
Just hopped over and checked out your blog- very nice! Wondering if you wouldnt mind sharing the neat "how to" for those canning ring" pumpkins crafts you show with the cinnamon stick for a stem- they are ADORABLE!!!!! Would love the how to on those!

This year was the first time I planted anything for a fall garden.... I planted spinach, carrots and radishes.... The radishes are doing well. The spinach is slow to grow and the carrots didn't come up at all. I got my seeds for stores. Next year I hope to be more dilligent with planting earlier. I think I was a little late this year.

I have planted herbs for years, and just planted chamomile this spring. My cats ate it while it was drying. You can't dry it upside down, so I had it on trays, flat, and they found it. Ugh.
I didn't have to plant heirloom lettuce, it replanted by itself.
This year we planted:
-sugar snap peas
-green beans
We are still getting peppers, swiss chard, jalapeno and cayenne, tomatoes from our spring planting.
I wish we planted rutabaga and turnips this year.
In our area chives and green onion come back every season - no need to re-plant. Spinach has never been able to grow here for some reason. We may try planting it next fall vs. spring.
We already had a frost here, but we are still getting garden bounty.
A friend gave me herb garden starters years ago. I have since then spread them out to family and friends and donated them too.

I agree with Laurie, Peg - those pumpkin decorations are adorable!! Please do share the "how-to"!
This is what we've got out in our fall garden:
Peas
Beets
Turnips
Spinach
Lettuces (three varieties)
Endive
Red Carrots
Purple Carrots
Yellow carrots
Green beans (still growing from summer)
Banana peppers (still growing from summer)
Italian peppers (still growing from summer)
Bell peppers (still growing from summer)
Some very confused tomatoes (still growing from summer)
Brussels sprouts
Cabbages
Kohlrabi (red and green)
Turnips
Broccoli
Cauliflower (the plants are huge, but not a head to be found)
Rosemary
Kale (still growing from summer - the wonderful gift that keeps on giving, I say!)
Potatoes - still in their condos, almost ready to harvest! The wait is killing me, but it'll be so worth it! :)
I did buy a bunch of heirloom seeds this past spring, but we also had some from prior years, and I also saved some.
Our first frost has already come, but it wasn't a killing frost. I'll be spending plenty of late afternoons over the next few weeks out in the garden covering my "babies" with blankies, though. We usually get our first snow on Halloween (not always, but it does seem to come that way!), and then usually around that time, we "close up shop," clearing the beds and preparing them for winter's slumber. The carrots will probably stay in the ground, and I'll let the hardy stuff stay out there as long as possible, though. Garlic will be put in the ground in November. If I have time, I'd like to figure out what else I can plant out there now so that we'll have spring veggies cropping up with the change in weather, but it's a bit hectic with homeschool and the holidays coming... We'll see. One step at a time!

Here in Texss, about 40 minutes from Galveston. I have planted broccoli,cauliflower,carrots,potatoes,onions, acorn squash. All are looking good.

My daughters and I just found lettuce, kale, and cabbage plants at our farmer's market. Score!! So, we'll be getting these in the garden spaces this weekend...

What do I plant in the Fall?
Why my butt in a comfy chair with a kitty or two by my feet and a good needle work project! lol!
No Fall gardening for me,,, we have below 32degreee weather headed our way tomorrow not to mention we are in a wind advisory watch...with the possibility of lite snow come Sunday...oh joy..
For those of you in the warmer regions,,, I so envy you.

I planted mainly greens: Turnips; Mustard; Kale all in one bed. Then planted in rows: Large head lettuce; Butter lettuce; Assorted Salad Mixture; Arugula; Spinach; Broccoli; Radishes.
So far, the only thing I've harvested is the lettuce. Radishes are big and bushy, but not yet ready. Broccoli is looking pretty pitiful, so I don't have high hopes for it. I purchased organic seeds at various places: Whole Foods, Southern Seed Exchange, and Walmart (of all places!). I'm in piedmont North Carolina, so the weather here is fairly mild, dipping down to the 40s some nights.

I was thrilled to have picked almost a dozen beautiful, perfectly round, smooth purple and white turnips today! They really DO grow better in the fall! Yum!!!

| We planted for fall in September(Northern Indiana). Our tomatoes, peppers and squash are long gone. But the kale, carrots, chard, lettuce, radishes and beets are all doing well. |
