I’m having a blissful moment just now. It involves basil. Yet, even as I have that thought I realize it is not the basil giving me this moment – beyond its heady fragrance holding me hostage and making me stand still.
Involving myself completely and totally in the awareness of this basil is the real trigger to the geyser of Joy I suddenly feel. Holding it in my hand enroute to its destination of the pesto blender, I am drawn right into its magical life.
Which, when done completely, explodes into the awareness of all life.
There is no distinction in that sublime state, between this life or that. Full awareness of any life opens itself into all manners of gratitude. This channel, when tapped, keeps on going and giving.
So it is – standing here making pesto – that I have tasted the herb of Grace. All is well in my world. And - here's my favorite Pesto recipe, perfected over time for its simplicity and fullness of taste:
- Pulverize: 2 cloves garlic 1/3 cup walnuts 1/3 cup parmesan cheese 1/2 tsp salt - Add and grind: 2 cups basil (I like it slightly packed because I love the flavor) - Add and blend: 1/4 cup olive oil

Wow! I'm printing this "Seashells with Basil" recipe right now even as I type! I have lots of everything called for. If not from my garden - on hand because of the five tons of pesto I'm making. Which is another story. I "accommodated" for the packet's qualifier stating to expect only a 50% germination rate for the basil seeds I bought earlier this year. I'm not kidding: 100% of them came up! And -- I think this is the first time in my recorded history that every single seedling that grew survived the trauma of being transplanted out into the cold Oregon "summer" of June. Soooo -- I am now harvesting a robust 55 basil bushes. :) I think they feel the love. LOL
Until later - I'm headed out to do more of the same. Making pesto, that is.
