Hi my name is Lisa and I live in south east Illinois. My husband and I live on 40 acres, and raise boar goats as well as meat chickens. We raise the meat chickens Aug-Oct and butcher at around 7-8 weeks. Last year we were able to butcher 200 chickens in 5-6 hours including clean up.

I have 4 grown kids and 1 grand-daughter with one more due this December we also have 1 grand-son in heaven. I love to pray, cook, sew, and can. We live simply, but we also enjoy a few splurges every now and then.

I hope I get to know many of you over time. Best wishes and many blessings.

Lisa

Welcome Lisa,
you sound like a busy gal! That's a lot of chickens you butchered. What do you have lined up for canning this summer?

I have done quite a bit of raspberry jam. Hoping for a great tomato crop. We already ate all the peas and I think we are going to keep up with the squash, too. I better plant more next year!

I love canning anything vegie or meat.

My garden is doing okay as long as I water, pretty dry here. I think they classified us as a severe drought recently. We are blessed with living close to the river and have a second well for livestock and gardening.

Welcome Lisa! My name is Annette and my family and I live in central Illinois. It's been pretty dry here too. We've had to haul in water to fill our cistern 2 times this summer to maintain our huge garden. I love to can vegetables from my garden too. hope you enjoy your time with us.

Hi Annette glad to see your post. I hope your garden does well. Mine was decent, but we are starting our fall garden now. This will be our first year with a fall garden so wish us luck. My tomatoes are just starting to come on good now. I've only put up around 30 quarts so far. Nice to have met someone fairly close to us, and have a great day!

Hi Lisa and thanks for the note back. Our garden had done fairly well as we planted it 2-3 wks before Good Friday. We put up 14 quarts of peas, canned 15 quarts/13 pints of pickled beets and 14 quarts of sweet corn. Green beans are slowly coming on and haven't had enough to can yet. I've had a ton of potatoes too. We cover the areas between the rows and around the plants in newspaper and straw. This has helped keep the moisture in the ground and also discourages those weeds. Will be freezing some tomatoes soon. I've been under the weather for about a week now and it's not fun when there's a ton to do and you just don't feel well.

My husband and I have 4 children; Rebecca is 13, Aaron is 11, Ethan is 5 and Joel is 3. I'm busy with them and the daily household chores. Add the garden which is 50'x200' and it can be hard to tell what end is up! We also had 18 chickens that we took to Arthur, Il to have butchered this past spring and have 3 New Hampshires; 1 rooster and 2 hens. I also work part-time at Cracker Barrel in the retail shop.

What are you planting in your fall garden? I had some "volunteer" pumpkins grow this year and we already harvested them for pumpkin pies, yum! I think 4 pies worth.

Take care,

Annette

I was born in Joliet, and my dad worked in Aurora at the Caterpillar plant. We lived there until I was 9, at that time we moved to Hutsonville IL. My parents grew up in the small town area I now call home.

I met my DH on 3/6/86 and married him on 5/23/86 over 26 years of true bliss. I have 4 adult children Levi 27, Ashley 25, Tanner 24, and Lendzy 22. I have a grand-daughter Destinee who is 2, and Trace my grand son is an angel in heaven. We have another girl on the way in Dec. her name is Hanna (her mothers maiden name).

I am blessed beyond belief. God is good to me.
