I have always wanted a tattoo, and would consider myself a 'straight laced' kind of gal. I promised myself that I would wait till I was 40 and see if I still wanted one. I already have my own design too, but I'm loving hearing about some of you guys incorporating your kids names and/or symbols of what they mean to you. I might have to alter my design. :)

Hi Jen,
My neighbor turned 70 last year, and so did a close friend of hers. Her friend got a tattoo to celebrate. She decided to buy a mule. She'd always wanted one of those too. His name is Merle. So cool...
When my husband and I were dating, we joked about getting tattoos, and even asked my mom, an incredible sketch artist and musician, to design them for us. She did, and I still have the drafts. We've since decided not to go that route, but I have been collecting my mom's sketches and "doodles" for years and plan to embroider them onto a quilt to honor her. Once I learn how to upload photos to these forums, I'll send one along. They're outta this world...

When the question of "tattoos?" comes up, my answer is always "YES!"
I got a daisy on my ankle when I was 20 and it was quite painful. As a result, it wasn't until 14 years later that I got another on. Six months ago, I got the word "LUMOS" tattooed on my inside left wrist. I'm a Harry Potter nut and, as a writer, Jo Rowling is a HUGE inspiration to me. I love body ink.
As an addendum to this discussion, I also got my nose pierced on Tuesday! I've wanted to do it for a while and I'm on a business trip here in Seattle and said, "Why the heck not?" and got it done. It hurt like the dickens and my nose is swollen still, but I love it!!!

Tattoes? I have 5. My son has 3, and my daughter has 4. All of mine hold meaning for me. Tattooes should always be symbolic for something personal, otherwise they're just trash and you will regret them forever.  This is the latest one. I've been thinking about another, just can't decide what. Just be careful what you get and who does it. A reputable artist will NOT tattoo a drunk person. Alcohol thins your blood. Not a good thing when getting a tattoo.

i am revisiting this post; i did not grow up with tattos however, i am considering one which would coincide with my cancer radiaton "tats"--i want small and discreet- but i have some symbolsim that would reveal a secret to my life...so---i'm still considering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Margo..so I would say you are okay..good to know... I didn"t hear from you after I sent my photos of my grandma n great grandma...tatoos..yep..got one for my 50th BD....and I agree ..they should have some significance ...I too am a cancer survivor...Blessings sister survivor...Shirl

Margo and Shirley, I am also a breast cancer survivor. On October 8, 2012, one day after my 58th birthday, was diagnosed with bi-lateral stage one and two. My surgery was October 30th. Just recently had had reconstructive surgery, about six weeks now. We have our own personal relationship with cancer...we are one as cancer survivor sisters. I too am in search of a tattoo for my personal journey besides a pink ribbon to reaffirm my strength and survivorship.

I have a tattoo on my arm a ring of rosses. I have been thinking of having it redone to add my granddaughters name and a butterfly. She passed away 3 years ago and I just feel like in need something in ink to represent her memory.

I had a tattoo once. No I didn't have it removed so do be careful about who you go to. I was young, and dumb, and in South America. It lasted for several years but you cannot tell I ever had it now. It was a scorpion on my shoulder. I would love to do another tat but I can't bring myself to pay for it when I have the little ones that need things more than I need a tat. :) Maybe someday when they are grown.
Oh, and the heart with wings... I know a gal that had basically that tattooed across her shoulders but the wings had her boys' baby footprints in them. Beautiful and significant. I also have several friends that have gotten tats to honor co-workers/friends who have died in the line of duty (aerial firefighting). I like them all but I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to the pain of getting the ink so we'll see if I ever do another one.

Shellee...Blessings sister..(My email is messed up..tried to email you)...yes we are sister survivors...and warriors in our own right...I had colon cancer..but July 17 was my 3rd year cancer free...I will keep you and Margo in my heart and prayers..we should come uup with a cute lil ribbon for all us MJFG cancer survivors...bet there are many more of us..Blessings girls..Shirl

I think tattoos are an individuals choice. While some can appear ghastly others seem to tell a story. From growing up as a tomboy on a farm and tangling with barbed wire fence, dirt bikes and a cow stanchion bonk on the noggin-I feel I have enough scars that I don't need tattoos. Or maybe I should just get a colorful MJF tat to cover some of them up |

Wow...how did I miss this post before??? I got my one and only Tattoo at age 58 in celebration of my
Grand-daughters first birthday (my first biological grand-child)...but the Tattoo really has nothing
to do with her...it is more about my Life Statement. Mine is on my lower leg (too large to be called
an ankle Tat.) but it is a large Purple Cross with a Red Heart in the Cross Section. I had told my
husband for about a year that I was thinking of getting one...but I think he thought I was joking....
until I came home from Michigan with it. I love mine. I am contemplating getting all My Grandchildrens
Initials done on the Cross...but not sure yet, it that's what I want...or if I will go with a
second tattoo with their initials.
I have to say that my personal likes are for any Tattoo to be significant to you, something that speaks
to you personally, that speaks your heart and soul.

I have 3 different sized stars on the top of my foot. My daughter drew them when she was about 4. They represent my mom, dad and daughter.
They are very simple and tasteful. They symbolize lines from the book The Little Prince. "in one of the stars I shall be living, in one of them I shall
be laughing...you will have the stars that will make you laugh." It was the passage I read at my father's eulogy. Parents and child all combined.
I love it and didn't get it until I was in my mid 30s. I believe people have to do what they are ok with. I wouldn't push anyone into it and I wouldn't
shun someone for getting it done. I teach and my students sometimes see my stars depending on my shoes. They think it's cool and know the symbolism
behind them. My boss doesn't mind it either. I love symbolism. :0)

No tats for me! One kind that I think is very pretty, though, and would be tempted to get if I were younger, is a small, simple all-white one that I saw once in a fashion magazine on a very pale-skinned model. It was just lovely.
Jonni, I was thinking that even as a ballerina, you might have been able to get away with one of those, if you had it where tights or even a bit of concealer would cover it. They probably fade badly, though, so I wonder if they'd be worth the expense and pain. |

I still haven't made the plunge- I pretty much have an idea of what I want and where i'd want it-however; this past 6 months has been so pooey money wise that a tat is the LAST thing I could justify!!!!
I still am hesitant to talk about my design because my symbolism is -so far- only known to a very few people- if I do what I want my kids would know...am I ready for that? I dunno....
shellee-congrats!!!! are you counting from last surgery or??????? I just know that i'm two plus years since dx.....and two years ago I was in my first round of chemo- then had surgery then chemo then radiation which ended in October 2012.....

I work as a corrections officer at a county jail for just over 4 years and have seen many tattoos,some tasteful most not. Remember, you are trying to set a good example to today's misguided youth whether you have children or not. Tattoos don't determine one's morals and values

But you will be judged by your outward appearance before you are accepted in new surroundings like a new job, new church, new family members. Today, tats are more common than not but even in professional settings, a tat can often hinder employment opportunities, promotions, etc. The same with ear gauges and piercings other than ears. So that being said, way things out carefully. Find out your employers policy before getting one. Sorry I don't have a tat and have no interest in getting one, but find some tats rather tasteful and pretty.
