Got my first tattoo at 50 - a heart and rose w/hubby's name - in a spot that very very few people will ever see. Also got my navel piercing the same day. A couple of years later I got a cute lavendar butterfly on my left shoulder blade. Neither of these can be seen depending on what I'm wearing. The first one maybe if I had the guts for a bikini. I'm thinking about getting my late son's name tattoted on one of my wrists, but maybe I'll do something different. Don't know yet.

LOL! Okay, Jen - so, funny story:
When she was a young, recently married woman, my paternal grandmother and a group of friends decided to go out for a night on the town. Their husbands and boyfriends were all away in the merchant marines, so instead of sitting home feeling lonely and sorry for themselves, they decided just be girls and blow off a little steam. Long story short, after a few cocktails, they were feeling slightly maudlin and quite heartsick for their men. During the course of the night, they somehow found their way to the tattoo parlor where their guys had all branded themselves with their sweethearts' names before heading out to sea. The girls decided to return the honor by getting what my grandmother “believed” to be “temporary” tattoos of their guys' initials in discreet areas of their body. After all, she said, proper ladies of that era would never even CONSIDER permanently marring their bodies in any fashion - and they certainly didn‘t want friends and family to see! Many years later, then a young, recently married woman myself, my dear grandmother was reminiscing about the good ol' days. While relaying this story to me, she began laughing so hard, her glasses started steaming! The spectacle was more than I could take, and soon I found myself chuckling right along with her, but I had no idea what I was laughing at! Despite her rebuffs, I continued to press until she finally she confided what was so funny. She asked if I remembered my grandfather's full name. Indeed…. Of course I did! Harry Abbott Gardner. She then proceeded to rise from her chair, and gently pull down one pant leg for me to see the eternal tribute to her beloved, so discreetly branded low on her buttocks all those many years ago. To my horror, there they were, my grandfather's initials, permanently emblazoned in a deep blue on her now not-so-supple derriere: HAG. We nearly busted our guts with laughter. She said the next day when she woke up and saw the "artwork" she had commissioned the night before, she was so embarrassed and distraught that she about had a heart attack. She said she blushed for days. Apparently, other than my grandpa and her physicians over the years, I was the only one who knew! LOL!!! Aaaaahhhhh yes... Memories of Grandma G... Good times…
Oh, and my now 50+ year old brother-in-law has a tattoo of Count Duckula on his bicep... He had it done when he was in his early 20's, the result of an epiphany that came to him while partying with friends. It seemed a good idea at the time, but believe me, Count Duckula hasn't aged any better than my brother-in-law! LOL!
Having said all of that, my foster son is an EXTREMELY talented tattoo artist. I admire his work and he has done such beautiful, striking designs that he takes my breath away. He has offered his services to both my husband and I on many occasions, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Tattoos can be very beautiful works of art, but I'm personally taking a cue from my grandmother's experience: I'll stick with aging with the permanent natural beauty of the skin with which God provided me at birth, thank you! My husband is debating it - he wants a tattoo of a retro Pittsburgh Pirate on his bicep, but I keep begging him to leave his muscle beautifully clean and pristine, the way God made him (I imagine an aging Pirate will look almost as pathetic as Count Duckula in the long run). I also keep reminding him that a man shouldn't do anything permanent while in the midst of a midlife crisis (I'm so mean! LOL!). Our son, however, cannot WAIT to turn 18 so he can have his big brother work his magic somewhere on his body, too. (Be still my mother’s heart!) I hope he will change his mind, but if he doesn't, at least I know he is in good hands. :)
Whatever you all get, girls, I'm sure they will be beautiful and bring you much joy over the years! Just remember to really think it through first. My grandma was literally labeled "HAG" until the day she died! LOL!!!
Hugs -

i have to say that some ink is gorgeous..and some... i did not grow up in an era of tattoos..and when my youngest son turned 18 and approached his dad and i it was very hard for me to accept- he researched and went to a very reputable "parlor"...after i divorced said hubby; he went on to get tats-as did my other son- oh and my daughter has ..i went with her for her first-on her ankle which is said to really hurt--
the kids have made sure that theirs are taken care of and all have some symbolism-last Christmas two of them went to get a "I wear pink for mom" with the breast cancer ribbon on their ankles- i love that they did this for me yet i hate that they will have them at 85+ years old!
i have considered a small one myself yet-nothing has really "spoken" to me either -not enuff to have for eternity--not to mention i am a wuss for pain! i have to have radiation after my chemo and surgery so i am looking at them giving me radiation tats and that scares me enuff!
when i was in 7th grade, my mother's friends gave her a gorgeous pair of pierced earrings for christmas- mom's ears were not pierced- by the time they all got drunk enuff- i ended up with the earrings and permanent holes! i still have those holes and actually added 2 more sets as i went thru life- however; i am always reminded of my dad saying that when i am old my ear lobes will sag like old women's breasts! needless to say i am cautious about not wearing heavy earrings-if i choose to do so i wear clip ons!
back to tats-i still consider it -just really have a hard time finding the art and the place (on my body) and the money...

I love when these posts come up as there are so many different and wonderful views on them. I personally have three tattoos. Each one has a special meaning to me. I have them put in places that I can easily cover out of deference for those around me that it causes issues with. I have a cornflower vine with daisies that I got after my first child was born. The daisy if for innocence and the cornflower for faithfulness. I also have a shamrock with the words "CR's girl" written in my handwriting over top. Then on my hip I have a butterfly in memory of the first time my older brother and I met. He had a cross put on his back for me and I did a butterfly for his wild spirit on me. They can be great memories and beautiful art if done right. I worried about the whole stretchy thing, but a pregnancy later, the butterfly that was the size of an actual butterfly and then turned into giant palm of my hand size, is now back to its pretty real butterfly size again. ;) hugs Jessie

| Got my first one when I was 50 years old - a butterfly on a vine which is on my ankle. Want to get an angel on my shoulder next and possibly the Chakra symbols put some where too. Love tats - they are all works of art. |

My husband has 3, and I've got a whole bunch I want to get done but between pregnancy & nursing I haven't been able to.
I am going to get my sons handprint(and the rest of my kids) on my upper back with their birthdays. I have thought about after I am done having kids, getting a full back tattoo of a herd of horses, two in front to represent my husband & I and then one for each child.
My husband & I are going to get matching tattoos of our brand somewhere, I haven't decided where yet.
I am going to get a small box turtle on my ankle because I have had a lifelong love of turtles.
And last but not least, I am want to get "doulos" in greek in white ink on the inside of my wrist. It means "bond-servant". My faith is the most important thing in my life and the reminder that I am a willing bond servant of Christ and I follow by choice is a powerful one for me. The white ink will make it less noticeable to others but I will always know it is there.

My only tattoo...so far is a spiral in the color of henna between my sholder blades on my back. Am looking to do more in the future. One thing for me is to decide. Loved all the postings of your personal journeys. The tattoo is a wonderful way to express our personal self.

Shellee, I agree, it's a personal art work. I've seen some beautiful ones. I have none. But would love to get one some day. Marly

I think getting a tattoo is a personal choice and that its not for everyone. I have a friend that says she will never get a tattoo, and it's not because she doesn't like them its more so that she says she can't think of anything she would want on her for life, even if its a memorial piece. And then I have a friend whose goal is to be covered in tattoos. I personally think tattoos should have some kind of meaning, no matter how small but at the same time, to each his own and if someone wants to tattoo something stupid on them then its their choice.
I personally have a couple of tattoos (one on my wrist, on my shoulder blade, and across the top of my foot) and have many more in the queue. I have placed all mine in locations that are easily covered, not because I had to or anything but I've decided that I want to be able to appear that I don't have any, while enjoying them, that way I can't be judged by them alone. Also, I have switched artists over the years because of the quality of work. All my pieces are nice but my newer ones you can tell were done by someone with a bit more talent. And from my experience, age has nothing to do with the talent, because the one on my back and foot, my most recent, were just a better experience from how much they hurt when they were done to how they look now years later, and they were done by a young man half the age of my original artist, with less experience. So definitely check your artists out, and don't go just by what a friend has or says, or one or two pieces. Also with placement, the pain that you may experience is going to depend on you and the artist. Not everyone is going to experience the same pain in the same location.
I have this discussion about whether I should get tattoos and piercings all the time with my mother and it normally goes something along the lines of...
"Your body is a temple, you should respect it and NOT cover it with permeant art." and like always my response is... "Your right. My body is a temple and this is how I'm choosing to decorate it." :-)

I have 2 tattoos. Regreibly one is refered to as a tramp stamp althow it is not. My sea turtal is on my lower back because in Navy tradition I am a golden shell back. The ship has got to cross the internation date line and the equater at the same time. So as you can see the tattoo and placement had a spacific meaning. As for the artist. I just walked into a shop in Brissbane Australa on my last night of liberty told the artist the general idea, size, placement and colors. I never had a regert about my turtal even when people tell me they thout it was a pineapple. The second one is a huming bird on my left sholder. It is beautiful. That one I walked into a tatoo convencion in Austen with a book on humming birds in my had. Found the artist I liked and shoed him the pitcher that I wanted. He lit up when I sayed lots of color. My humminmg bird is for my mother.

Summer, if I ever got a tattoo, and I would like one, it would be for reasons that you got yours. I bet the humming bird tattoo is nice. Marly

I love it Shellee, I have a small one on my ankle. It is Angel Wings with a rose in the middle, my hubby and son's names are on the wings as they are my angels and I love roses. It is very special to me and I designed it myself. Having said that I will not get another one as it hurt to have it done, of course I am a big baby, but I do not regret getting the one I have. It is almost 8 years old,it was a 50th birthday gift to myself. So, I say go for it. Hugs, Debbie #1582

it is beautiful. just think about where it will go and how much pain you can take. I don't mean to scare you but the closer to bone it is the more it will heart. also size and detail will affect cost. the picture you have would be good on the upper back.
