I'm sure opinion is divided on the subject of permanent ink. I've always been a pretty straight laced and "classic" in taste, but I admit that lately I've been thinking of getting a small and significant tattoo.

Go for it. I had a cousin who had a dragon tattooed on his back. I don't know what it meant but I know a woman who has a similar tattoo. Both of these people were/are very professional in their careers. And these tattoos are large, covering their entire backs. And I think they looked intriguing.

I have one ... hubby's name with rose vines intertwined around it. Done by an artist, not a person who uses licky stickies ... and then fills it in with ink.

I love tattoos! I have 5 of them right now. The last one I had done was actually drawn by my son. I told him to design something that he'd thought I'd like and he drew a beautiful cross. The tatoo artist took my son's drawing and applied right to my forearm and viola! my son's artwork for me to keep forever! (my son is very good at art, we have several of his paintings/drawings hanging around our home)
The heart in the middle of the cross is called "the mother's heart"
This tattoo is in honor of my daughter. She has gone thru many changes in her life, several foster homes, then being adopted by me, and many surguries (she was born with a condition) And she's come thru all this, becoming a beautiful lady....so a butterfly for her!
So that's just 2 of mine and I plan on adding to the ones I have. I told my children that tattoos can be very beautiful and meaningful. If they want to get one, make sure it means something special to them and one that they would not be embarrassed to show God.

I love ink; I have 13 right now. My ex-husband and I owned a tattoo shop many moons ago (he did 12 of mine). Anyway, my suggestions are: pick something that is meaningful, placement is super important too (as in do you have to keep it covered due to work and does the area fit with the design), names are generally a bad idea to get--they usually end up getting covered up by something else eventually. It's also important to find an artist that you like and trust, with good hands (you don't want someone with heavy hands who will dig into your skin--not only does it hurt but the tattoo looks like crap after it heals), the artist should have a decent portfolio of previous work as well as tons of flash for inspiration if you don't already know exactly what you want. I recommend visiting several shops and talking with different artists, looking over their work and if you can watch them doing a tattoo on someone else that's good too. When you find someone that you feel comfortable with, who understands the ink you want, discuss the design you want, have them draw it up for you and then come back a few days later to get it, after you've had time to mull it over. Seems like alot to do (and some artists don't like this approach) BUT it is your skin, your ink and it is forever (even with removal, you'll still have a scar) PLUS you are the one paying for the ink so everything should be to your specifications and comfort zone. When talking with an artist, you shouldn't "settle" for someone who tells you to pick something off the wall or who doesn't want to discuss customizing something that is on the wall, AND you don't want someone who makes you feel like you're being rushed or isn't listening to/understanding what you want.

Have a small pink daisy with a yellow center, and two green leaves. It was done about 30 years ago. I still love it, though, it needs refreshing. Time has faded it a great deal.

I have mixed feelings about this. I don't get a lot of the tattoos that young people seem to be getting today.....on their faces and necks, and on their hands. I don't mean to offend anyone, but to me it looks so thuggish. I like tattoos, but I think a person should still be able to look professional. And some of the tattoos I've seen look so satanic!
Sorry....I know I'm way off of what you are talking about, but since we were on the subject, I thought I'd vent. You said small and significant. I think that sounds nice. I suggest you really do research on the artist you want to use. Make sure you see pictures of the tattoos he/she has specifically done. I got a tattoo of a vine with flowers around my ankle when I was 20. I think I got an artist who was just starting out. The tattoo didn't turn out horrible, but it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. It didn't occur to me that all of the artists would be at a different skill level. I know....duh! Anywho....it sounds like you've put thought into it so I say do your research and go for it! Let us know what you decide and if you get one, we'll be expecting pictures! :)
Shanda, I like the meaning behind both of the tattoos you posted. Your son did a very nice job at creating a tattoo for you and I know it must be very meaningful to you! And I like what you said about picking a tattoo that is meaningful and one that you would not be embarrassed to show God.

I waited until I was 32 to get my 1st but now have 15 at the age of 53....., just got my last one when I went to Hawaii in May...lol....lve them but am picky & get ones that will always mean something to me or create a memory for me...Michele'

I have really thought about it for about 10 years, I am 60 now. I just haven't found anything that "speaks" to me. I will keep looking, one day something will speak to me and I'll get one.

Emily, you're statements about some tattoos looking satanic and thuggish really cracked me up. I have a tat on my neck (and my arms, back, chest, legs), but I'm no thug. Most of mine are on the demonic side though and all are meaningful. All of mine are covered when I'm at work or not in the mood to show them off...and no I'm not offended just very tickled, lol.
Most shops (well ones with more than 1 artist) usually do have artists at differing levels or apprenticeship and skill as well as different styles of tattooing.

I like your tattoos Shandra. My honest opinion of this topic is, each his/her own. I think tattoos are a beautiful work of art when done well. I have seen several beautiful tattoos.

Oh Jen Be careful my son was just diagnosed with Hepititis C. Not good. He is 29 years old. The doctors are telling him he got it from tattoos. Of course he has quite a few of them. I am so worried about him. His liver is swollen and he has to go through the treatments. I talked to the pharmisist about it and he said all it takes is one. He got all of his at replicle tattoo parlors. He is devastated. I am not trying to scare you I am just learning about this. Good luck with your choice.

I'm just not interested in them--I don't dislike them on other people (unless they're just too much, or they're skulls with fire coming out (?) which just seems creepy to me.
Believe it or not, my mother has 3 and she just went to have permanent lip liner done. I don't have a tattoo, and my husband didn't until 2 years ago. We have a good friend who is a nationally recognized tattoo artist (and surf board shaper) who lives part time here, where he was raised, and on a house boat in San Diego, and he did my husband's tattoo (a WWII bomber squadron's nose art) and my mother's lady bug, dragon fly and recently added, a violet under the lady bug, for her grandchild, "Violet".
When I was younger, tattoo's weren't popular and as a ballerina, I couldn't do anything weird with my body like piercings or tattoo's because costuming and makeup couldn't cover those up. So, the timing and popularity was missed on me. Honestly, all I could think about was old skin--what it looks like when those "tramp stamps" start to sag and that cougar around your right breast starts to streeeeeeetch out and it looks like a daschund ;)
I think there can be really tasteful, beautiful work done--and our friend, Steve Mast, does it for sure. But, I also think people can just go crazy overboard, and I just have better things to spend money on :)

I got my first tattoo when I was 50 years old. It is on my ankle, (I desiged it myself) angel wings with a rose in the middle with my hubby and son's names on each wing as they are my angels and will always be there for me watching over me.I wanted something simple, I love my tattoo and am so happy I got it but I will never get another one, as to me it really hurt! I do not tolerate pain at all and this kind of pain I was not happy with. I know I am such a girl.

HI :) I have two small tattoos :) One on my ankle, which is a half moon with shooting stars & the other is a small shooting star on my chest above the breast area, they can only be seen if I choose them to be ;) My hubby has 4. I got mine done when I turned 22, they are now 32 years old & still as bright as if I got them applied yesterday :) LOVE your tattoo Debbie :)

We had a lengthy discussion about this over vacation.
Brother has several, I want 2 but can't find the time or someone to go with me to talk to -to pass the time.
I do have an artist and a friend whose examples are beautiful, so I know the artist would do a great job. I also have the selected images
The really cool thing is, most people have a story to go with the art. I love asking ...most will tell you!
I do think that the full body art is a bit cluttered, as are full sleeves. They are cool to look at, but personally, I'd rather see clearer images

I could never see myself getting one. Although I think some of them are beautiful I think they would look just as nice on a canvas. I feel that the human body is perfectly beautiful and a masterpiece in itself. I don't even wear jewelry.

I just could never see myself with one...I look at my 87 and 85 year old grandmoms and just think of myself that age with a tattoo. For some reaosn it makes me giggle.
Although my sister and cousin have 2 of the cutest ones ever...My sister has a "ring" around one of her toes and I love it! |

I have to agree with Jonni, Laura and Michelle. I'm a retired RN and I took care of many elderly patients with tattoos. They were not pretty after all those years. That said, to each his own. I would never get a tattoo, but if you want one and are sure the artist is using all the proper precautions then go for it.
