Hi Sisters,
I so enjoy the forums and try to contribute my thoughts when I truly believe something to be useful, offer insight and to be from my experiences true. I learn so much from you also and really enjoy your tips and seeing photos on what is going on with you.

But I also live in an area where many people cocoon and due to heat, or just wanting to be isolated, or they rather go to the casinos (something I rather not do)they just don't associate much. I would enjoy being with farmgirls in person. I am spontaneous and just enjoy simple get-togethers where one can visit and share what is new.

I am hoping there are a few farmgirl sisters nearby me. I live in Henderson, NV a few minutes from the south end of the Las Vegas strip (oh gosh..that is just too structured and artificial for me). I enjoy driving to St. George from time to time, have enjoyed Springdale, Utah at Zion National Park, so I would be willing to make weekend trips for a get-together if you live in these areas.

Anyway, hoping to hear from a few farmgirls in Nevada or Utah. I just don't get over the Arizona way much, although it is a beautiful area too.

Here are some lyrics I always think of when I take my evening neighborhood walks and all the houses are dark (even at 8:00 p.m.) It is not like they have to get up early to do farming and ranching and tend to the animals. Where is everyone? I really sometimes feel like I am in a Twilight Zone episode where everyone disappeared. Then I sing to my husband as we walk hand in hand around the neighborhood blocks looking at the moon:

Everyone's Gone to the Moon by Jonathan King.

Streets full of people
All alone
Road full of houses
Never home
Church full of singing
Out of tune
Everyone's gone to the moon.

Eyes full of sorrow
Never wet
Hands full of money
All in debt
Sun coming out in the middle of June
Everyone's gone to the moon.

Long time ago
Life has begun
Everyone went to the sun.

Cars full of motors
Painted green
Mouths full of chocolates
Covered cream
Arms that can only
Lift a spoon
Everyone's gone to the moon.

Everyone's gone to the moon.

Annette, I am currently in Washington state but are planning to move to of all places Henderson Nevada. We were there a few weeks ago looking at house and checking out the area and love it. Heat doesn't bother me, we get it here in the summer most days being in the low 100s. Hopefully we will get our house sold soon and will be heading your way. Any info you can pass on to me would be really appreciated.
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Well, if you like very structured neighborhoods, with cookie cutter, clean and modern, you will like it here. We get very little rain, usually less than an inch a year these days, because it evaporates before it hits the ground. As it is extremely hot in the summer, the winters are extremely cold for here..It can get to 10 degrees in the winter. We used to get one foot of snow in December but haven't had that for the last two years. The safest, nicest, and most convenient neighborhoods are in what is called "The District" area, Seven Hills Area, Sun City Anthem and McDonald Ranch are two over 55 retirement communities. If you like golf, there are many courses here. If you like to hike there are trails at nearby Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon and near Lake Mead. If you rather step back into time a bit, and have small older fashioned homes in a small town atmosphere, I suggest Boulder City, but it is about a 1/2 hour drive to Henderson from that area that borders Lake Mead. Get ready for an adjustment, there are only a few restaurants (except at the district) that are not attached to a casino. There are a few chain restaurants like IHOP, etc. but most are casino based. If you want simple, affordable, easy with nothing to do living, this is an area for you. Hopefully you have no children that need schooling. The schools here are a mess! Also, if you have medical issues, most locals know you will go through at least 5 primary care physicians to get a decent one that knows what to do for you. Really! Even my medical professionals themselves have asked me for M.D. references. Many of us have different needs and interests, so I can't speak for what is best for you. I do like the blue skies and the warm sunshine, but for us it has been our biggest life mistake in moving here. You can only walk the district and get a bite to eat so many times. There is just not much else and most neighborhoods restrict planting greenery except from an approved list of trees and bushes. No green grass here...so in this case I just have to say...the grass is really greener somewhere else, unless you like structure and artificial environments...very Orange County like similar to Southern California.
It is just not for me. But we moved here because my husbands dad was very ill with bladder cancer and we had to take care of him. He now passed away. We take trips as much as we can to have a change of scenery. Best to you.
Annie

Hi Kathy,
Annie here again. I forgot to mention, be sure if you decide to buy a home (I would rent for awhile to see if you really like the neighbors as so many foreclosures in Nevada has brought in all types of people) to ask how much the homeowners association dues are. Some are staggering amounts depending where you live. On the Las Vegas strip some people pay $600 a month in dues. Crazy...many areas it is $300 a month. I live in Anthem so our dues are $90 quarterly but that is because we have so many homes packed in next to each other it cuts the cost. Also, ask if the LID (Land Improvement District) tax is paid on the lot the home you are buying is on. Many people just pay a quarterly tax and never pay the LID off and they usually are $10K but can vary depending on how much improvements were needed to build the neighborhood. Lots of dirt moved, sewers, walls, grading all added up for the developers and this mandatory fee goes with the territory. Sometimes you can use it to negotiate your home price. A good realtor will be able to tell you about these. Also, because our water is so hard and in 2005 many homes were built with plumbing parts that were not compatible with the water, corrosion began and many homes had to be refitted. It is called Kitec repairs. Make sure the home you are looking at (even to rent) has these repairs done already. It is very costly. Please be sure to get a good home inspection from a reputable firm. I do know that the only realtor firm I would trust in this area is Proudfit Realty. 702-526-8000. Doug Proudfit runs a great business (I used to be a realtor in California) and am very impressed with this company and Doug and his family. He has been in business a long time and is a great broker with ethics and attention to detail. He really knows the area well.
If you have any questions just send me an e-mail through Farmgirls site. Best to you and any others considering a move to Henderson, NV.
