Hi gals! Been gone for awhile working on getting back into the swing of freelancing. I'm also working on a book. Anyone else here writing? Anyone else WANT to write? Sometimes writing can be a lonely venture...let's cheer each other on and chat about it here!

(I just started an author website, too, where I'm posting lots of writing related things. If you're interested, you can visit the third link in my signature. There's also a link to my FB page there.)

Happy writing!!

Hi Amy, I write as often as I can which isn't much. I've been carrying a short story and a love novel around in my head for years. I've got several pages done on the novel but the more I write, the more I know I don't know how to write. People say I have a gift for writing but I rarely get time. I journal alot. I have had several people tell me that I need to write about my crosscountry trip of the past 3 months that I "kinda blogged" about on the "across the fence" forum. I finally decided to write, very rough draft, the brief story of the novel and the short story so that at least the story line would be written down. I hope to have much more time to write after I retire in 5 years. Good luck on your book. Joey

Hi, Joann! It's a bummer to not feel like you have the time to write. I've been there, too! Hopefully you'll have more time after you retire, but is there a way you can make the little bit of time you have now more focused towards your goal? I actually have a post coming out on Monday about how to make more time for writing. I've found that when I have tons of free time to write, I actually get less done because my mind wanders. Its those afternoons where I know I only have an hour to write because I've got to leave to go to something...THOSE are the most productive times when I get the most done. What are the novel and the short story about? If you're already editing yourself while you're working on those pages of the novel, you'll always to critical of what you write and never get done. (I used to be the same way!) Let the first draft just be a first draft. Get it ALL OUT and then GO BACK and fix stuff. :)

I do, although I have not put enough time into it over the last two years. I freelanced on-line with eHow for years and finally sold off the last of the articles on there. I do have articles on other sites, but would rather write more for printed materials. I made good money selling them, but have not put enough effort back into it. I've been organizing my house this summer to have space to concentrate on writing books.

Things just got the best of my time - Mom had 2 open heart surgeries, we had deaths in the family, moved twice, and now dh is trying to donate a kidney and find a new job (at the same time). I've had my kid's friends tell me that our home is better than cable - lots of interesting stuff going on. Almost like a book itself. Ha ha ha!

I really do need to write more often and get back in the swing of it.

Kristina - life definitely happens and gets in the way of writing. I didn't write for almost four years while dealing with some "life stuff". But now, like you've I've organized the house and my schedule and life around finding that focused time to write. (And things have changed in the writing world so much in the last four years, I'm having to re-learn a ton of things!) Hopefully we can all encourage and teach each other so we can get back into the swing of things! :)

I am using a book called "The Write Brain" to do writing exercises in. I will put in time today to work on that.

Each page in the book gives a prompt of some sort (all are different and challenging).

I'll try to scan a few pages for you to see.

Does anyone have the book "The Art of War for Writers: Fiction Writing Strategies, Tactics, and Exercises" by James Scott Bell?

I would love to read it, but our library does not have it.

Okay, so you have inspired me to work harder at writing. I am digging out some old writer magazines and doing some reading and writing. I even took a composition notebook and decoupaged paper on the front that looks like newsprint. It's my anything journal, for gathering information on the go, in cafe's and where ever I am traveling to - conversations, descriptions of people, etc.

Yea, Kristina! I love it! How are those writing prompts going?

Yesterday I sent out three query letters to magazine editors. I have two more ready but I won't send them until next Monday. Now I'm working on my book "Carsick Along the Road of Homeschooling". Kind of funny, I had the book started in one file, but I also did this book as a workshop at a homeschooling conference so I had it written out as a speech. I couldn't figure out how why I was so reluctant to work on the book...and then yesterday it hit me that I liked the voice of the speech much better than the book. So now my job is to convert everything over and continue in the voice of the speech. Much easier reading, I think. It's so nice to have breakthroughs like that, though. :)

Just went through my stuff and found a couple books I don't need anymore. Is anyone here interested in them? I'll send them to you!

On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Non-Fiction by William Zinsser
The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published: How to Write It, Sell It and Market It, Successfully! by Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry

Let me know if you are interested in either of them. :)

I did not get far on prompts yesterday. I'm really trying to cut out time though.

Anyone read "The Forest for the Trees?" It's been out for awhile but was updated in 2010, written by an editor, about writers. I just started it and it feels like its a psychological assessment of writers and why they do what they do. I love it. It proves I'm not the only crazy one around, and that some of the things I do are just normal writer things. :)

Hey there Amy: I write too. Used to work for a newspaper as editor and women's section writer. I just turned 70 on the 8th. Even in "retirement" there isn't always time to carve out to do specific writing, especially with kids and farm. But first ask yourself what are your 5 passions (other than family). When was the last time you did them and if not, why not! I used to get more done with a timer. I would sit down for 20 minutes and just write. Sometimes I couldn't think of what to write. Just put words down. Write about something new you just got or some skill you want to share with others or about your favorite chicken. Just write. With practice, writing becomes easier and becomes automatic. I 'd love to hear about the book you are writing. Keep us posted. Kindred spirits need support. Bonnie

I'm taking time to write today....after a much needed nap

My mother e-mailed me a story she wrote to submit to a magazine. I need to edit it for her as well.

Naps are important, Kristina!

Sent the first re-written chapter of the novel I wrote ten years ago to my friend-editor. She loved the changes in the re-write so I'm movin' forward! Well, that is after this week. It's county fair week and it would be a joke to think I would get anything written!!!

I have learned to carry a small journal book in my purse, sometimes my story ideas come to me while I am on the go. I try to write down as much as I can when it comes to me. Sometimes its something I just need to describe so I can come back to it. I am hoping that one day I will be able to find the time to pull it all together into something that can be published.

Well, I didn't really "write" today, but I'm planning out a few possible magazine queries. I am doing some searching, researching and making notes.

It's time to get really busy, as my son needs financial help for college.
