Good luck with those possible queries, Kristina. I've been sooooo busy on the farm, I haven't had time to write anything other than what is scheduled in my blog. Kudoes to you for sticking with it! :) I know that when the business of fall is over, I'll have a TON of time to write!! :) This whole butchering chickens and canning and everything else take way more time than I'm used to...but believe me, I'm writing all the time in my head and taking notes!!

I subscribe to a magazine called Poets & Writers. Tons of good info. there. I also have the "Write-Brain" book. I think I'm going to do some exercises from it but write with my left hand...I also have a book called "The Mind of Your Story" by Lisa Lenard-Cook. I currently have two poems I'm going to submit to a literary journal, and a novel I'm working on. I'm up to chapter three--it's slow going because I keep re-writing it! But that's what authors do. I have a couple of poems published in a book, but they're the cheesy kind. I tend to hold back when I'm writing--I don't know if that's good or bad, it just is. If you're a writer, keep at it, no matter what people say. The world needs to hear your voice--maybe you march to the beat of a different drummer. Cindy

Cindy, I think you gave us (and yourself!) some great advice. You said you tend to hold back when you're writing...but then you said the world needs to hear your voice and maybe you march to the beat of a different drummer. :) I find as I get older, the less I hold back!!

That's right Kristina! Yay! Get to work, everyone!
And I TOTALLY forgot to tell everyone here, in the busy-ness of everything happening on the farm the last three weeks...I FINISHED writing my book about homeschooling! It has been edited, I'm in the process of formatting it for Kindle (what a headache!) and waiting for my cover to get done. I imagine it will be released in the next couple weeks. YAY!!!

Oh definitely, Kristina. I'm having a friend do mine because I don't understand anything about them. I think its something you either know how to do or you don't. I don't. If your son knows about that stuff, that's GREAT!

It's hard when you're not "feelin' it". Enough to make a person insane! I had a writing teacher once who just told me "write. It doesn't matter what it is about, something will eventually come." I got really mad and just started writing total nonsense...and you know what, eventually I came up with something. To be sure, there are days where writing is easier...but there are days you have to work at it. Nothing fabulous was ever easy, right? ;)

Amy, Congrats on getting "The Home School Highway" together!!! I mostly write for the fun of it, but in the last year I've started to work on recipes that are mostly organic as well as wheat free due to gluten intolerance. Over the years I've come up with many, many recipes and want to write a farmgirl foodie around the world culinary adventures cookbook. I'm trying to actually do the test kitchen part now because I tend to be an off the cuff cook and I'm trying to get exact measurements down to be able to write the recipes. I love to write fiction and have a bunch of stories rolling around my head, but these days I don't usually have time to sit down and write a lot like I did when I was younger. I'm a scatterbrain any more and I tend to lose the tread of my writing really easily with all of the daily interruptions. Sad but true!

Hey Kristina - sorry it took so long to see this! I had an agent about 7-8 years ago who was shopping a couple books around for me. The process of securing an agent (at least when I was going that route) was almost exactly the same as sending a manuscript to a publisher, its just an extra step. I'm sure the books you've read talk about the process...it's very very similar.
As far as if anything has changed in recent years, I'm not sure because I went the self publishing route. I know that traditional publishing is going through huge changes (just how much depends on who you ask) and it know its becoming harder and harder to get published traditionally. I know that the way to secure an agent is still all about selling yourself and making them believe your book is the next big thing. It used to be that if you got an agent, they shopped your book around and you were kind of done. That's not true anymore, though. Because if they shop your book around and get someone to agree to publish, you've got a ton of stuff you're still in charge of doing (like TONS of marketing!). The whole writing world is just changing so darn fast. If you google "hard to get an agent" you will get all sorts of things on both sides of the fence from how "its even harder to get an agent now" to "don't worry about what people say and still shoot for the agent anyway". The problem with the working writing world right now is people are pretty biased about what the "right" way is to go about getting published...I think both have their advantages and disadvantages. Feel free to message me if you want to talk about things more. :)

I subscribe to Poets & Writers and they frequently have good articles on finding an agent. Their latest issue is on inspiration. Which I need to write! I wrote some in my novel tonight while listening to The Celtic Circle 2. Music helps inspire me. I've also been reading Julia Cameron's book the Artist's Way and it's been a help. I just bought her deck of Blessings cards and I've been reading and meditating on one each day. One thing to remember is that the Creator loves it when we create! Another thing I've learned is that imagination is more important than knowledge, and all creativity begins with love. Nurture your inner creator and blessings will follow. Cindy
