| All the talk about windchimes got me thinking about what sounds I find so comforting in the country. The sound of an approaching thunderstorm or the rustling of leaves in the wind have got to be my favorites. I also love to just stand in the rain with my face towards the sky. I believe I can feel God through the gentle and sometimes fierce winds blowing across the rolling hills of this area. I also have recordings from the country and I LOVE the sound of loons, but there are no loons in the southern Indiana/northern Kentucky area where I live! What are your favorite country sounds and why? |

When my mother moved from the farm last year, and I visited her in the city... the sounds I most missed were the coyotes howling at night, the cows mooing and the rhymthic sound of the sprinklers irrigating the pasture. I was surprised by how much I missed them. At my home now the birds are arriving back in great numbers, and they love my trees... and I love their bird songs. Rachael.. the moon invokes the same response for me... Our Creator is everywhere!

| Wow- you both like the sounds of coyotes. Coyotes were re-introduced to our area of southern Indiana a few years ago and the sound of them STILL terrifies me!! I know they aren't going to hurt me but still...every time I hear one, I run for the house. I'm planning on buying some land in the rolling hills of central Kentucky once we get married and start a family.... I guess I'll have to get used to the sound. |

| Rachel, In our area coyotes seem to be nocturnal.. ie, we usually only hear them at night when they are out feeding. I lived on that farm for a long time, and visited frequently once I moved away, and I only saw them on few, rare occasions. They typically don't come around people. Now, weak animals and chickens are another story. Keep your livestock well protected when you do get to your piece of heaven! |

my favorite sounds are my animals..I love to hear a mother goat or sheep "talk" to her babies using little funny sounds in her throat..and the chickens make such comforting sounds. It has been a long time since I woke up without hearing a rooster..I love that.
I sort of miss the coyote sounds..since we moved here almost 3 years ago I don't hear them anymore..where I lived before we heard them all the time.

For all of you who love the animal sounds I have just watched a touching documentary movie that seems to be new to dvd called "The Weeping Camel. An incredibly lovely storie from the Gobi Dessert area of Mongolia. I especially like to see how these people interact with their animals and the way that they solved a really potentially serious problem. I think you would also like this movie.

I grew up in a very old house that you opened the windows in the summer and they stayed that way until fall(more or less...) Through the screens we would hear the spring peepers begin,followed by the buzz of flies that hit the screen, bees, birds, bats, owls, tree frogs, locust, the rustle of racoons as they ravage the trash cans at
night and that most delicious of sounds: a cool breeze through the trees just as you've given up hope that it would ever arrive.
We are fond of the hawks and falcons too and the peregrines flew over the other day to say hello and let us know they are back. They were quite noisy until we came out to see them and then they performed their aerial stunts for us. My son is convinced they are the ones
who nested near us last year. As I remember they are territory specific if food is adequate so maybe they remember our woods and the boy who calls them!

This is a good topic - all your replies so far are really descriptive and wonderful. This will sound strange, but my all time most favorite sound of the country is the quiet. Underlying the breeze through the pines is the quiet. Behind the cry of the hawk is quiet. The coyote's cry resonates into the silence of night. In the city, with a car honking in the background, these sounds lose some of their beauty - a lot of their beauty actually.
I feel such a deep sense of peace when I drive up and get out of the car in the country - immediately the sound of no noise makes me feel I have come home.

| I agree - the sound of quiet in the country is beautiful. I just moved back to the city after being back home in the country for two years and the noise level here is annoying. Ohhh how I want to buy my land NOW and move back out into the hills!! |

I have found sounds in the countryside where I live have changed over the years...There is always the rumble of a freight train nearby hauling grain from the elevators and the occasional whistle. Coyotes are everywhere here at night and I have never quite gotten used to the noises they make. Sometimes they can wake me from sound sleep and in a panic I run to the window and yell at them to go away...I fear they are attacking our cats or dogs or baby calves... Bullfrogs croak in a pleasant rhythm in our pond after rains. The winds at night in the trees can be soothing...and the distant rumble of thunder. We used to have more hoot owls at night but they have gone...I miss them.

rain on the roof is one of my favorites too. We don't have a tin roof but we have metal awning things over the windows in front and the porch and it sounds like that..I love it. Hate the awnings, but I guess I can look at it that they are good for SOMETHING!!

I love the sounds of thunderstorms and in the fall the corn dryer our farmer neighbor uses during his harvest.

I like the sounds of rain and thuderstorms but always keep an wary ear tuned to the more ominous sounds like a tornado siren or that low flying jet sound that a twister makes. I seem to be tuned to the sudden drop in air pressure before these get too close. I have awakened a few nights right before a twister came over our home. April and May and sometimes June can mean many sleepless country nights here in Kansas. The sound of the combines harvesting wheat late is a comforting sound also. Have never heard a corn dryer before.

The sound when lambing season is in full swing and the baby calves bawling is always a great reminder of the power of spring and the country. Also the sound of the peeper frogs just before a rain storm.

I used to love the sounds of the crickets and stuff on the creek behind my grandmas house when I was growing up. The mosquitos were awful, but the night sounds were worth it.

At my grandma's, on long ago childhood Sunday afternoons, I remember the sound of mourning doves cooing, and big bumble bees working in the hot sun on the berry bushes.

I love the mourning doves cooing too! We call them turtle doves here. They started their sweet songs a few days ago in our elms. My 12 year old daughter can imitate their calls to where the birds answer back. They "talk" to each other. They are another sign of spring for me. Bumble bees are loud! They love the bright colors of some bee balm I planted a few years ago. My daughter is scared of them but they are so big and clumsy I think she could outrun them.

I heard some coyotes tonight for the first time since we moved here. They were up in the woods behind our house. I knew that we had some around given the fact that the back of our property is heavily wooded. Their sound just creeps me out. I checked to make sure both cats were inside. Then I went around locking doors and putting down the blinds like I thought they were going to try and break in! LOL!

I love the sound of crickets, the sound of rain on a tin roof, the sound of the hummers (hummingbirds) flying around.
Where I currently live is in a small country town, I really enjoy it but would love to live on a farm with more land. But this will have to work for now!! I live across from a church & elementary school. I love the sounds of the church bells tolling, I actually use this all the time to know what time it is!! Who needs a watch....
I also love to hear the school bell and the kids running & yelling to get to the playground first!! I remember doing the same thing.. |

We live just outside of town so I wouldn't consider it completely country. But we do live next to Indian preserved land so it's a lot more country than Venice Blvd. in L.A. My favorite sounds, definitly the frogs they ae so small and they make such big crokes, I just love it, Hummingbirds that sound like gigantic bugs, the sounds of busy bumbles and of course the birds. Growing up, what I miss the most is the sounds of the cicadas - the sound of summer. Sometimes I think what affects me more is the smells of the country, like wood smoke in fall, jasmine is the southern Cali winters, or the damp fog here all year, the smells the redwood now thats smell that you can't really describe, but it fills your whole body. I love it .

| My favorite sound is the wind blowing through the leaves especially right before it storms. The leaves turns upside down and show their silvery side. While you stand there watching you can actually feel the atmosphere change. |

I live in Minnesota and on cold winter nights I love to stand in the barn and listen to the horses munching their hay while outside the wind howls and the snow is flying. I also like to listen to the coyotes sing on a cold clear night, and also the occasional wolf song too.

We just had a whopper of a thunderstorm Saturday night. The first rain we have had in 3 months. It was awesome. Losts of thunder and lighting.
I love the sound of crickets and grasshoppers. There is something very soothing about their song. I love how in the country you can actually hear sounds. We live in town and it is hard to sometimes hear the leaves rustle, another wonderful sound. I can here the ocean at night as we are only 3 miles away. So that will have to do for now.

Your to funny, Thats exactly what I do to when I hear coyotes, they have such a cold eriery(sp) sound, also when cats fight outside, same thing.When I was a teen, there would be tom cats fighting outside my bedroom window and I was so scared I would whisper loud for my mom, cause I thought they were going to get me too.Actually
my Dad went out one time to scare them away, and one ran into my bedroom to hide under the hot water tank in my closet. Maybe thats when it all started . I think the cat was ours but he had one eye ,because of a fight and I never really liked him.
But I do love all the farm sounds(and smells) we hear, like our Jacob sheep butting the barn in the middle of the night with thier horns. ROFL
but its better than cats fighting or coyotes

| I LOVE the sound of the blue jay's screech. I don't know the exact memory, but when I hear it, I'm reminded of something from my childhood. It gives me a peaceful feeling for some reason. |
