The Mister loves his Earl Grey, and he likes to have a slice of lemon floating in it. Lemons do add up here in the Midwest, and I half-jokingly suggested that when we build our earthship we should have a greenhouse with a lemon tree in it.
He got THAT look in his eyes and the next thing I knew, we were pricing nursery plants through one of the companies where we do our grocery shopping (www.fromthefarm.com). It turns out, Meyer lemon trees are not that expensive! The shipping is kind of ghastly, but when I get paid mid-month we are going to order one anyway. We can put it out back in warm weather, and in winter our kitchen gets a lot of sunlight.
I'm so ridiculously excited! Meyers produce year-round, so not only will he have plenty of lemon for tea or fish--but I can make lemonade and have lemons for baking!
Now, I just have to study up on how to take care of them....

Alyce I don't think a lemon tree will grow where you live unless you keep it in a climate controlled green house. NOW IF YOU LIVED in Florida or Calif or Texas maybe.

Thanks for catching the reference! That was my initial thought (why I suggested a greenhouse), so I may end up talking him out of it.

but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat (but makes a mean lemonade). LOVE Peter,Paul and Mary!!! love Earl Grey too, like Margo, I haven't tried it with lemon, you may have started a new trend. the folks that owned our house before us built a gazebo, we plan to turn it into a greenhouse one day and grow such things as lemons, limes, and pineapple. blessings Phyllis |

Alyce, we can grow lemons here in Iowa. My sister has a potted dwarf tree that produces well. She keeps it outside in the summer and just moves it inside when it gets cold (it's on casters). You could probably do the same up in WI! Good luck!

I live in CT and have had a lemon tree for 3 years. It has finally got lemons on it. They are about 3/4 in long and doing well. I just bring it inside for the winter. It looks like its dead during the winter, but it comes back every year.

Alyce: We had a lemon tree growing inside our house in the South Window for almost 30 years. Last year we got 30 lemons of decent size. Then it died. Probably wore itself out. But if I can grow them in Minnesota, your should too. Good luck

Exciting Alyce! I live in Texas,4 years ago I started a lemon tree from some lemon seeds I dried out from some lemons I used up. It got so big I transplanted from variedpots each year. And last year I but it in the ground in the front of my house. It is looking really good and growing well. Best of luck to you. Laurie

Lemons? How cool is that? Living in MN I never even considered it. When we get our greenhouse up and going we will have to stick one in there!

I don't see why a potted lemon tree wouldn't grow in your area. You have enough humidity and warmth in the summer and if you have sufficient heat in the kitchen in the winter at night as well as in the day....go for it! Laura

Hi Alyce! I live in Tampa and have 2 Myer Lemon trees and 1 pink lemon tree. I've kept my Myer trees like topiaries but Instill get loads of lemons come December and January. I had to figure out what to do with all those Lemons. I make lemon flavored vinegar, I freeze their juice for lemonade and salad dressing in ice cubes in plastic baggies, I zest the skins and freeze the zest for baking, I make Lemoncello every year and give it away as gifts, and I make Lemon Olive Oil Cake, and Lemon Rocotta CheeseCake and freeze them or give away as gifts. Please let me know if you have other ideas, cause December will be here before you know it, and I'll be drowning in Lemons. LoL

I think you could grow a lemon tree. I read a story about a man who has a whole orchard of peaches and other fruit up north. They are planted in giant moveable skiffs. He just moves them into the barn when it gets cold. I have heard Meyers are the easiest. I'm getting one in the spring. I love lemon everything!
