There are 'laws' that protect adults from adults, adults from children and in some cases children from adults - but why isn't there anything to protect children (18 and under) from other children? In school AND out? As in bullying both on school grounds as well as not.
We're seeing more and more of the after affects with a student who has been taunted and bullied over and over at school and not. The combination of schools who claim they can't do much and the parents of these bullies who turn a deaf ear to what their little Johnny or Jane has done sickens me.
Case in example: As I went to drop off books at our local library today a local school was letting out nearby. While coming back out of the library I noticed a student running into the library nearly hysterical from something a fellow student had done to her. I followed her to see if I could be of assistance but one of the library employees had already come to her aid. I felt awful for her and so angry at the same time.
Just saying, I sure don't see this going in a good direction unless something serious is done about it.

Karen, One of my kids were bullied for over 8 years in the same school system. I almost went after the school with a lawyer. I should have. The teachers were blind and were set in their ways. They would not do a thing. I went to board meetings, wrote letters, and wrote to the superintendent of the state we live in. It was horrible. My child was on the brink of suicide.
Now, several years later, they are trying to do better. However, when the students are off the school grounds, they can't do a thing. One of my other kids got rocks thrown at her, at the bus stop, that caused her to go the emergency room. The school would not do a thing. It's very, very frustrating.

I feel like I am beating a dead horse, but this is one of the reasons that I homeschool. I didn't have a great time in school. I was bullied and picked on for being shy. (In Ohio)
Principles and teachers seem not to care. Plus parents can't believe THEIR beautiful children would do such a thing. So it is a vicious cycle.
What a shame. Childhood shouldn't be such a rough time.

Here in NJ they have passed anti bullying laws this year...and I do hope they do in other states as well. But does that help with the "mild" forms of bullying? No. Does it help deal with the violent shooters....no...that goes far beyond. My dd dealt with a particular bully in first and second grade...her school made her feel like a tattler for reporting it. It was really ugly. The new laws do require a protocol for follow up if an incident is reported....but as a teacher myself, I can honestly tell you that by FAR most teachers DO care very much about their students....but with 120 students it is impossible to give each one the attention they need. I work many late nights and weekends following up with parents via phone and email, but it still isn't enough.
I am considering putting dd in a local small, private Christian school...not because they do a better job, but because of smaller class sizes and more attention for each student. |

Shelly, my hat is off to you. I hope that I didn't offend you when I said that the teachers didn't care. It seemed that way to me at the time that it was happening.
I have great respect for teachers. You are in the trenches everyday, all day long. It is a shame a few bad apples spoil things.
Thank you for what you do every day.
I pulled my daughter from Christian School. It can be a dumping ground from the public schools. Plus she is extremely bright and gifted and I don't think she would have done well in any school setting.
Good luck to you!

Amy...Thank you...and I was not offended...no worries...I know all about the "bad apples" spoiling our reputations...
You make a good point about private schools sometimes being a dumping ground. I hadn't considered that but it is something to look out for...I cringe at what goes on socially in schools....and I see it daily....and see the awful effects of high stakes testing on kids...but have not found a solution for dd yet. |
