To our friends in Australia and everyone around the world who watched and admired Steve Irwin...
I was shocked last night to hear of Steve's passing. It was actually the top story, "breaking news", on a local news channel that aires a ten o'clock news.
I have a soft spot for Australia, partly because I have a good friend there and because it is so unique. And I really admired Steve. He was pretty intense at times, but was so knowledgeable about the natural world and its creatures and so passionate about wildlife and conservation, too.
It sounds as if his death was quick. And he died doing something he loved doing.
My condolences to Terri, the kids, and the people of Australia.

We are all so devastated here - I'm tearing up just writing this. Steve was just wonderful - I think why he was so well-loved is he was genuine. He was the same before all the fame as the Steve everyone saw on TV. He was so passionate about Australia and conserving our wildlife and land - he spent millions on buying up land, not so it could be used for something, but just because it deserved to 'be' for its own sake. Terri is just as passionate and I feel sure she will admirably carry on Steve's work, especially for Bindi and Bob. Steve's parents started Australia Zoo and I'm sure Terri will want it to continue for the children.
I know Steve was popular in America and I'm sure you all will miss him as much as we will.

I just barely heard of this on NPR. I am so sorry. I had only seen the "crocodile hunter" once or twice, but he had me mesmerized the entire time I was watching. Sending my best thoughts, prayers and condolences....

Steve Irwin came into my radar when my son was in kindergarten or first grade and I don't think there was a single little boy who didn't play "Crocodile Hunter". They would shout out things like "Crikey... this ones a beaut", and other terms they had heard from the show. One boy would be the "hunter" with his crew and several little boys would thrash around on the ground and be crocodiles. What amazed me was that Never did this game become mean or unkind, they would capture, "measure", give a "treatment" (medication?) and release. Steve taught them in their own unique way to appreciate wildlife and to this day my son still says he wants to be a veterinarian for "wild things". Thank you Steve for touching alot of people allover the world with your unique love of nature. May your spirit carry on in the preservation of all that you loved.

such a sad thing at such a young age..but at least he went doing something he loved...and the going was quick .....and no suffering through a painful illness or such like.. I really feel for the wife and children he left behind though. I just hope that the media will give her a time of mourning and respect during this tragic time.

My boys watched that show faithfully too. It was a real favorite. What a sad thing to have happen!

To Jayne and the people of Australia and the world: My sincere condolences on the death of Steve Irwin. It feels insane just to write those words. He was a man who loved the animals and worked for their well being. The world needed him and I'm sorry to see him pass so soon. Surrounding his widow and children with love, peace and healing.

I had alot of respect and amiration for Steve for two reasons...
1. He had the guts to do what he loved no matter what anyone said or thought. I wish I could do that!
2. He had a great love for animals & he used his fame to raise awareness about conservation, endangered species, protecting habitat...etc..

Boy,that man sure "lived" his life. I think we can all learn something from him. My sons are devistated, mostly sad for his family and that his kids won't grow up "personally" knowing him. Terri seems like a very strong woman and I know she will be strong for her kids.
It is a great loss, may all those who loved him be inspired to carry on his greatest efforts. The world is a better place having had Steve Irwin in it.

No matter how many times I hear a clip about this on the radio or I hear someone talking about it, it just doesn't seem real, if you know what I mean. He was such a vibrant, "alive" person, that it seems almost like a bad joke or something, and that someone will pipe up and say it really isn't true.
My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Wow, I dont even know where to start! I was so shocked and saddened when I found out from someone there in Australia, must have been very soon after they announced it there. I was hoping it was a mistake or someone being stupid, but sadly found it was true. He was one of the few animal shows I would let my children watch because instead of making wildlife out to be some evil killing machine, he pointed out so wonderfully how they were just doing what they had to to survive with no malace or vice involved and I thought it was wonderful! We do not get his programs here but in the states my oldest was glued to them. It gave him a good view, in my oppinion, of the natural world and was thankful for that. One of the biggest books my son read was Steve's story that my father had brought back from Australia when he was there. I feel the world has lost a wonderful voice and the animal kingdom its best ambassodor to the human race. May he rest in peace and most of all may his children and wife find the strength and support they need to make it through this trying time. My family's souls were blessed having "known" Steve and he will be missed by us!

I would like to also express my deep sorrow about the untimely death of Steve Irwin. He brought such joy to the world. I feel like I have lost a dear friend.

We watched him all the !!time and the grands did to.
Its so sad!!!
We always felt like we knew him personally, he was so happy ,friendly and full of energy

My whole family gasped with horror and then sorrow at the death of Steve Irwin. All I can think of is the Vikings who died in battle went to a special "heaven" Vahalla... in my mind, Steve died doing what he loved the most in life and he's in a heaven where he is surrounded by the animals he fought so hard to protect.
My heart goes out to his beautiful wife Terri and their two children.
