I just read an article in Prevention Magazine with some great information about Power Walking. Does anyone else follow a power walking regimen? How has it worked for you? I'm talking about the 4.5 mph walking workout, not a leisurely stroll down a country lane.

Paula: I love to walk. I don't walk 4.5 MPH. But I walk, at least, five days a week for about 45-50 minutes each walk. When I need to clear my mind, I take off walking.
Do you power walk?

I'm thinking about trying it. I've tried running countless times, but I just keep hurting myself. It is time to get in shape! I work in a building with 17 floors, so I walk the stairs once or twice a day. I can do 10 flights (about 16 stairs per flight) without dying, and hope to be able to do all 17 flights before long. Power walking would give me an opportunity to do a little more toning.

I don't power walk, but I include in my workout. I increase my speed every five minutes up to 3.5 (so far) and some days walk 40-60 minutes.

Well my plans for getting started on a new work out routine are on hold as I've picked up a cold...bleah. I'm getting a lot of exercise running back and forth to the kleenex box though.

Paula,
I do power walk, have for years and it just is my routine. It is important to incorporate intervals of stride in the routine and I will do short, really fast strides for a few minutes, then long, "pump it" strides . . . several times over in the course of each walk. The intervals help keep it working . . and I walk 5-6 miles each day and time myself to walk it 5 mph. I walk 4 days/wk in the winter or as long as I can see to walk. I work 10 hr. shifts on Mondays and Tuesdays, getting off at 6 PM and in the winter it's too dark to walk then.
On those days I use a recumbent bike and/or elliptical machine (at the home of the person I work as a caregiver for).
Anyway, I started doing this in the 70s AFTER I kept getting painful shin splints with running. I just turned 63 and I've been told my "sticking to it" routine all these years is why my bone density, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and overall health are considered "Excellent"! So, my motto is: "Keep it movin' or you won't be"!
Go for it, Paula! It's very worth it!

Is it better to walk every other day or every day? A friend and I began walking a couple weeks ago. We walked every week day and averaged 2 1/2 miles each outing. After 2 weeks, I had to stop. I hurt! We are trying to get back into the groove again... but we are struggling.

Laurie,
Depending on what is hurting and why. Sometimes having the wrong shoes can cause pain that needn't be. It's not necessary to walk every day, but you do need to stick with it. If you're just starting a routine there will be soreness that will "work out" with staying with it. You'll also get into a rhythm and learn what your body is telling you. I know when I start getting certain pains in my hips and legs it's probably time for a new pair of shoes. I always write the date on the outside of my new shoes when I start using them and that helps me know about how long I can wear them. Typically I can get about 500 miles on one pair. They don't LOOK worn out but the support and inner workings just break down and it's time to get a new pair.
But I walk through everything and it is the BEST thing for me when I have a headache, back pain or neck pain. It's good to do other things one or two days a week . . . like bike or something else. I take one day off per week.
You might try walking two days then take one off, then two more, then one off and so on. You can change that as your body gets more conditioned and used to it. Don't give up!
Hope that helps . . and hang in there!
CJ

P.S. If you have issues with "hot spots" or blisters get some GLIDE anti-chaf/anti-friction product . . it will SAVE your feet. It is packaged, looks like and applies like stick deodorant. You get it at sporting goods depts/stores. You use on your feet or anywhere that might chafe, such as your thighs, underarms, etc. They developed different "varieties" of it but I just go with the "original".
It is a requirement for me when I'm doing training walks . . and the final event.

CJ, Thanks so much for the information. I will be walking on loose gravel roads, so it seems like I would need more rigid shoes...and we have hills..nothing is level around our house, which will make for a good workout. I've been looking at treadmills for when weather is muddy/snowy. Just a little rain or snow is all it takes to turn our roads to mush. I had shin splint issues too, when I tried running, but the more I read about power walking it seems the better it is for you anyway. I also just read on Health.com that walking poles help burn 46% more calories. Maybe that is something I can work up to. Think I'll concentrate on the basics for now.
I'm almost over this cold, so hopefully I and my little walking buddy, Wilma the pointer mix, will be trotting down the road in no time! Just turned 47 and this is the year to get in shape!
