my daughter who is 15 years old- is dealing with really hard menstrual cycles...the docs I work with want her to start a BC pill and I'm not sure that is the avenue to travel down...I would like something more natural..the side effects of the pill scare me. anyone have any ideas to help me with my beautiful, wonderful, loving, teenage daughter?

Thanks

Lori

I'll be looking forward to the answers/ideas to this one. My dd (almost 14) is starting to follow in my footsteps in regards to a bad cycle.

a nice natural supplement would be great - for the both of us!

I have had very painful cycles all my life. At the age of 18 I was put on BC for the condition and while it helped greatly I had deep reservations about taking the pill. I was told by many Doctor's that since every test I endure was negative it was just my nature and the BC pill was my only option...no, was my answer. I tried this and that naturally speaking but nothing helped until I stumbled upon raspberry leaf tea. I encourage you to look it up and do your own research to see if it will be a good fit for you - it has changed my life. I started out the end of summer 2010 drying and using my own raspberry leaves and was amazed at how my symptoms all but left me. Then in the spring when I ran out of my leaves I ordered Bulk Herbs Raspberry tea mix and I can say I will NEVER stop taking a cup of this daily :) Good luck in finding something that will help your daughter.

I am taking herbal classes and this is what I found in my studies.

put one tbsp. of chopped sheperds purse in 2 cups of boiling waterand allow to steep 30 mins. strain and put 1 tbsp. of the the liquid in 1/3 cup of water and drink several times a day. Helps with cramps and to regulate the flow.

or

place a small handful of fresh strawberry leaves in 2 cups boiling water and steep 15 mins. starin and sweeten. drink several times daily if your period is heavy. supplies the body with needed iron

Let me know if you need anything else!

Red raspberry is AWESOME. Also if the flow is super heavy, yarrow is superb!

I have had problems my whole life with heavy and painful menstration. I found a doctor a few years ago who did an ultrasound and found that I had very large cysts on the backsides of my ovaries. He thought to check there because I don't sleep on my back and have a lot of lower back pain. Once they were drained most of the pain was relieved and the flow became lighter. It isn't a permanent cure, but a 5-10 year treatment. I will have to have it redone until I am able to have my ovaries removed.

Most doctors won't see cyst on the backside due to the type of ultrasound they do. An intra-vaginal will see them, but most doctors don't have that type of equipment. They also won't do one on a vigin for obvious reasons. They can do an ultrasound from the side or back to see the back, but most won't unless you really make a stink about it. They say you would have cysts on the front if there are any on the back. That's not neccissarily true. It is possible to only have one cyst!

I just thought I'd throw that info out there!

Found out that the more I exercised, the less crampy I got. Cycling really helped as did swimming.

And sorry- I am one of those who wear tampons- so a monthly flow wasn't going to stop me from any of my daily activities. Ever.

I was having some 'issues' and went and had an intravaginal sonogram. Though nothing major was found, it was fascinating to see the little cysts on my ovaries. Anyway, that's still something to consider...she may have large cysts which cause all sorts of trouble!

I used to have really bad cramps and I found that if I took 2 ibuprofen (I know, I know) the minute I thought I was going to start, I was virtually pain-free for the rest of my cycle. Of course, a soak in a warm bath worked miracles until the ibuprofen kicked in. I remember having to leave school because the cramping was so bad! I drove home as fast as I could so I could jump in the tub.

I was on BC for about 10 years. I hated the pill because when I had to start back after the 7 placebo days I would always get very nauseated. If I had a natural alternative available, I certainly would have taken it!

my family swears on red raspberry leaf. My first two years I had really hard cycles as well and I took capsules.
