Hi,
My daughter is 18 years old and has acne. Its not severe but its enough that she is concerned about it. She had as gone to her PC and to a dermatologist but all the "prescription" topicals have not helped in any significant way. She doesn't want to take oral prescription meds and I don't want her to either. Do any of you have any suggestions that might help her?

Thanks so much,
Vicki

I have found that I can't use any OTC products except Oil of Olay sensitive skin wash or plain homemade soap. It seems there is some chemical there that causes me to break out. I buy my plain soap from www.sudsysoapcakes.com
she is great & very helpful! Wish I had known this 40 years ago! Hope this helps!

I have heard washing your face with shampoo for oily hair will take the oil out of the face. They said it works great. Not sure never had try it. But it can't hurt

sulfur medication OTC works really well. In Walmart, there is a section of stuff in HBA for Latinos and African Americans. I also figured out that different dandruff shampoos work a bit too.

I have always had huge issues with acne, even after teenage years. But I swear by the mary kay products. Velocity and the formula 2 have geared my skin to better places.

Good luck!

My daughter has very sensitive skin. She's allergic to sulpha based anything. We tried Pro Activ and had a major reaction. So, I took her to the dermatologist and told him I prefer non-medication treatment, if at all possible. He told us that there is no cure for acne. She will have to manage and use things to control it. He suggested using Cetaphil daily wash or something comparable. It is a non soap cleanser. She uses it on her face and body, and it is working well for her.

Vicki - One thing that I learned long ago really stuck with me and has helped me tremendously over the years. Your skin is made up of layers of cells, that kind of layer like bricks on a house - staggered. When you overdry your skin (using alcohol based products, drying soaps, some topical medications), it actually dries out the cuticle, so that those "layers" if you will aren't nice and flat against each other any more - they're dry and staggered like a bunch of potato chips in the bowl. That leaves all sorts of nooks and crannies where dirt and bacteria can get in, fester and then before you know it, you've got a pimple, which is basically your white blood cells running to fight off any infection. I know this is a really, really simplistic way of explaining it (and hopefully not too confusing). SO, the key is to NOT use harsh, drying products on your face at all. In the summer, I wash with plain yogurt mixed with a little aloe vera juice. It's a very light wash and leaves your skin feeling very soft and smooth. I would think your daughter probably doesn't need a lot of moisturizer at her age, but if she wants to, she can follow up with a little coconut oil mixed with a drop or two of vitamin E oil. It may feel a little greasy on her skin, so tell her to just towel it off a bit. In the winter my skin is so dry I can't stand it, so at that point, I switch from the plain yogurt/aloe vera wash to using just the coconut oil and vitamin e as both a wash AND as a moisturizer, again, toweling off anything that doesn't soak in. The coconut oil has very good, natural anti-bacterial properties to help fight off infection, and vitamin E is awesome for the skin, helping with wrinkles and overall skin health. Both together are an incredible treat for the skin. As a matter of fact, I visited a new doctor a few weeks ago, and she was insane raving about my skin - she couldn't believe I am 46 years old, and wrote down my skin regimen to use herself (she's 41). When I saw her last, she was raving about it and telling all of her friends, too. So, I'd take that as a good sign. ;) Finally, your daughter really needs to be vigilant about removing any dead skin cells so they also aren't trapping any bacteria and dirt underneath. Now, I'm thinking that she probably has sensitive skin, right? I do have a neat little homemade scrub I use, but just to be "safe" with her, I would suggest she first try using a little baking soda rubbed with Vitamin E and some water as a very gentle scrub on her skin. Believe it or not, this really keeps your skin smooth as silk! You don't need all those fancy microdermabrasion products when you've got good ol' fashioned baking soda in the cupboard!!! I wouldn't suggest she do this more than once a week, though, because she really doesn't want to irritate her skin. Try this regimine for a couple of weeks and see how she does. If you think at that point she still needs more of an intense scrub, then try grinding together a mixture of oatmeal, wheat germ and corn meal until it is very fine. I just use maybe 2 parts oatmeal to 1 part wheat germ to 1 part corn meal. When she goes to use it, again, have her make a paste by adding a little vitamin E and some warm water. Make sure she GENTLY massages it across her skin. Rinse well with warm water. Her skin will be a little red at first, but have her use the coconut oil/vitamin E oil as a chaser moisturizer, and in a little while, her skin will be absolutely beautiful!

I hope this helps a little. I know that diet is really important, too, despite what some people will say. She needs to drink plenty of water to clean her skin from the inside, eat a healthy diet including plenty of vegetables and fruit, and get plenty of rest to sleep away any stress. :) Poor kid - those teenage years are just difficult enough without having to worry about your skin, huh? I'll say a little prayer for her, too!

Best of luck!

Hugs -

Nini

Nini,
Thank you soo very much for the wonderful advice and your skin care protocol. She is in her first year of college so I will be emailing your instructions to her asap. I think I am going to try this on myself, too. Sounds wonderful. Again, thank you for taking the time to share this, I truly appreciate it.

Peace,
Vicki

sometimes a vitamin B deficiency can cause that. It wouldn't hurt to supplement anyways. I started having a problem when I was a teen and my mom got me calcium/magnesium and b12 and after I started taking that I never had a problem with that again! I started to have an issue with adult acne then I remembered the cal/mag and b12 so I started taking that and even through my pregnancies and afterward I haven't had an issue with breakouts like other friends of mine had during/after their pregnancies. I also wash my face twice a day, I use Burts Bees but I'm not sure how natural they are anymore but that is besides the point. I used Mary Kay Velocity as a teen but often times the moisturizer would leave dry patchy spots on my cheeks and my t-zone would be too oily. Burts Bee's took that away and now today even post partum I don't have any problems with my skin. So my advice is vitamins and skin care. Sometimes acne stuff is too drying producing too much acne and be sure to wash pillow cases at least once a week :) Best of luck!
