We are back to trying "date night" again. Now, I don't mean we'll be going out to eat every time, and I don't mean the movies every time either.

Some times we just lock ourselves in our room, rent or get a free movie, take our dinner with us, and simply separate ourselves from the kids for one night. I loooove pasta for these nights.

In the summer, date night can typically start on the porch or patio - again no kids.

Don't get me wrong...I love the kids, but "date night" means my husband and I "dating" again.

If you do this too, what types of entertainment do you do? Other than the movie theater and out to eat.

I recently found out about a local winery that does wine tasting nights. I'm considering that too, but we are looking for more inexpensive ideas too.

We enjoy going out for coffee and browsing bookstores too. I'm looking into museums that have low entrance fees too.

DH and I do this, despite the fact we've been married 45 years and the kids have been out of the house for a couple of decades. We sometimes go to a movie, sometimes we just agree to have a quiet night together with no TV or internet. We live near a wonderful hiking area, Garden of the Gods in Colo. Springs, and sometimes we pack a light meal and walk the area until we find a nice place to picnic. And as for wine tastings, we do that often. I find a bottle of something I think we might like, pick up some favorite cheeses, maybe a fresh pear or crackers, and have our own tasting by candlelight. The ideas are endless. I also gave DH a telescope for Christmas and we are planning evenings under the stars after the weathers warms this spring.

The morning breeze has secrets to tell you. Do not go back to sleep.

Melina, good for you!

My hubby and I haven't been very consistent with the whole date night thing. But we need to. I'd love hearing ideas too. Things that don't cost a fortune. Sometimes we do the $100 dinner dates but we can't do that all the time. I'm not very imaginative in this area and could use the help.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

We light a fire in our outdoor fire pit, snuggle up with fleece blankets, drink wine, and talk. I know it sounds really simple, but when we can find the time to do it - it feels so indulgent! :)

Our favorites are new restraunts, festivals, and free or low priced live music in bars or at colleges and such. We don't drink, so it's sodas and coffee at the bars, which some don't allow when they are doin the '2 drink minimum' thing. We also go to comedy shows, some of which offer discount coupons and such that make them very affordable.

I need ideas for a non-alcoholic drink vs. wine. We are really trying to boost up our immune system (any alcohol lowers the immune system) and have talked about not having wine with dinner etc. We can add it back in later when we are in shape again, but I would love ideas.

So far I have:
-mix of cranberry juice and diet Sierra Mist
-hot teas
-mix of orange juice, cranberry juice and diet Sierra Mist
-Mineral water with real lemon juice

Exactly what I thought Heather, grape juice. Let's see...date night...we have done the fire in the fire pit and that was great. We have a telescope and that's lots of fun. You could try a night camping in your backyard. Check your local library for postings and activity center for short term classes. Many local groups sponsor free or cheap social activities like bird watching or other wholesome activity. They have free concert/movies in the park when the weather gets better. Try cooking dinner together and try things you don't normally eat. Dance in your living room!

I thought about "cooking together" too. It's hard during winter when everyone is in one small house (five kids).

When we camp, we cook together and love it. We also enjoyed it when we rented the cabin last year.

Thanks for all your ideas. I am checking books at the library too. :)

We have been married for 43 years, we do date night pretty consistently. We have gone to the nearest lake, sat on the tailgate, just watched the boats. We have gone to the mall, grab a bench, and people watch. We have even gone to the local little leagues games, and sat and watched the games.(and not even know anyone playing) Great baseball tho. we love to go to our local High School, band concerts, especially at Christmas, we have gone to the plays, or the football games. Our grandson used to be in band, but in college now, so we really don't know anyone at the High School, but just fun and cheap to get out and do something different. We love to go to the cemetaries and read the headstones(sorry if this offends someone). We go to Hastings book store, and read magazines and just grab a cup of coffee. We believe its not how much it cost, or how long it lasts, its just being together and talking ,even holding hands. Just being together. We were High School sweethearts and plan to stay that way till the end. My grown children in the 40's say their parents are more in love than anybody they know. Makes us proud! Farmgirl #946 Linda

We then go to sams club and we just shop unrushed holding hands, maybe get a drink in the snack bar and just sit and talk. We then come back home. This is an every friday afternoon deal. Dh doesnt like to go out and do anything so this is as good as im gonna get but i love it! We have been married 20 years.

Yeah, we go for a short ride on the atv (as long as we get a sitter for the kids that is!),after we put them to bed we will watch a movie or talk or make sundae's/floats. If we do spend money its usually out to a little mom n pop diner in town where we can have an entire meal for the both of us for about $10 but it's just like homecookin'!!! Sometimes its nice just to go for a short drive, walk down our road, or on the weekends when the kids are down for their nap sitting on the porch so we are close enough to hear when the kids are up but at least we aren't actually "in" in the house so its kind of like a date since the kids are sleeping :) I can't wait for summer again!

For non-alcoholic drinks try dressing it up by getting sparkling cider, it's sort of fancy. We will go to the bookstore mostly but on occation we will cook for ourself after our teenagers go to bed, we will go downstairs (sort of away from their rooms and sit together and make fun of whatever is on the TV. For right now in our life it works, maybe when the kids are a little older we will be able to do some other things too.

God bless,

Our favorite date is a nice but very reasonably priced restaurant. The catch is it is an hour away. This works the best for us because it usually takes us about an hour to gt caught up on daily grind conversation then move on to us and just chatting. We also have started playing scrabble with a fair bit of laxity allowing slang in some. We also try lunch dates some when our work lunches can overlap. The date is just as nice but the prices are better. We are also less likely to drink which also saves a buck or two. We also find an hour or so doing yard work but together instead of at opposite ends of the yard is nice too.

I love reading all the other ideas and I am glad you all try for date nights. All our friends think we are great for doing it but they never bother. We think it is so important for us and our family to have some time for us without our beautiful daughters.

I'm now starting to work on a "mystery road trip." Dh cleaned out his night stand and found a coupon book I made him over 6 years ago. He's "redeeming" the coupon for a mystery trip. This will be challenging to do on a budget, but possibly fun too.

I can't wait to hear what you have planned for your "mystery road trip!" Sounds like fun.

My dh is working odd hours a few days this week. Went in at 6am and staying until 8am. then going back this evening. We'll have a couple of days to ourselves without the kids around. He's taking me to an Italian grocery store in the city we've been wanting to go to.

This weekend we'll be kid-free. We have some restaurant gift cards we're going to use. I'd like to extend our date by doing something else. Not sure what our budget will allow for.

Maybe the "glow in the dark" mini golf I saw yesterday at the mall. I was with my girls and said "wouldn't that be fun?" Neither one of them was excited but they replied "That's what Dad said when he brought us to the mall at Christmas!" Perhaps a date night!

One of our favorite things to do is walk to the store holding hands, pick up ingredients for a special meal, walk back home (harder to hold hands when they are full of bags though), cook dinner together, and then watch a free/inexpensive movie or one of our DVDs. We used to order Chinese take-out, but the last time we did that we both got sick...no matter, I'd rather cook something fun anyway!

Our living room overlooks a lake, so when the weather is nice we like to walk along the shore and picnic at a little park. On *really* nice days, we'll walk up the street to a period-recreation garden and wander the paths for a while.

A hook, a book, and a good cup of coffee....

My husband loves mini golf, we have done it more then once for our "dates". (funny thing is we NEVER dated! So we don't really know what to do on "dates". We met each other, and married 2 days later! lol haha That was almost 12 years ago! lol).

We have seen the glow in the dark indoor course, he liked it a lot, I was only so so with it. I like being outside. We went mini golfing to a outdoor night time course twice now. And I loved them! Even if one was too new and hadn't put out enough lights and we kept losing our halls in the shrubs/water, and couldn't see to find them! lol haha But, I would say that is one of my DH's favorite "date" things to do. I like it too, it was one of the things I was always good at when I was little. And no matter what my health is I have been able to do it!

I have really enjoyed reading all your sharing. My hubby and I use to have really consistent date nights when our kids were growing up. Sounds like something we should bring back and actually call it a date night again. We were so consistent with our date night and actually calling it just that, that I'll never forget a funny conversation while driving the kindergarten car pool. My son asked if tonight was the night to go out for my date. I saw in my rearview mirror one of the neighborhood kids eyes get absolutely huge as he asked my son, your mom goes out on dates? My son replied thinking nothing of it, yes. The other boy was even more shocked and said, and your Dad is going to let her? I thought about having some fun with that and see how long that would take to make the neighborhood grapevine, but then thought that I should nip it in the bud, so told him that I was going on my date with dad. :) Still makes me laugh after all these years. :)

Be true in heart.

I just seen bowling brought up in another forum, that's also been a fun "date" for my husband and I. Not too expensive, but more connecting then a movie. I like movies don't get me wrong, I just don't see them as connecting time. Mini golf, bowling, stuff like that is "fun" and connecting in my opinion. Movies you don't get to really talk or "know" each other doing. So I like more active dates like the golf/bowling, we can talk and have a ton of fun. I also just love to drive around to no where, but with the gas prices today we can't do that any more. I miss that. I remember even as a kid sometimes my mom would get "antsy" and just want to do something, so even late at night we would all get in the car and just drive around aimlessly, and then usually end up at some river spot where we would proceed to get out of the car, and go look at the river the moon and all of that. I liked it and it relieved stress for my mom. I think it would do me good as well and I miss it, but again with gas prices today it's not been something we could afford to do any more. :( However, we were going on at least one cross country trip a year and we/I always had a lot of fun chatting him up during that time. And sharing music and comedians and such that we liked. Especially so much he had never been exposed to before.

You ladies have great ideas. My husband and I rarely have time for just us, but when we do. We may sit by the fire pit in the backyard and talk, go for a walk in the state park near our house, watch a movie together at home, and bowling is another favorite. In warmer weather, we may just ride back roads. I like to go fishing, but it's not my hubby's favorite, so he indulges me, sometimes.

Before my hubby retired, I did a 'surprise kidnap' for him. I made reservations at a nice hotel in a town 75 miles away, secretly packed our bags, then I picked him up at work that Friday and just started driving out of town {laughing}. He was like - what's going on? and he was very pleased to find out that I was 'kidnapping' him. It was a great time.

Now he's retired and we do almost everything together and feel like we're on a date alot of the time {laughing}. We never dated before we got married, as we met online, so all our 'dating' was chatting on the net {laughing}.

Oh, ladies, I have enjoyed reading all of your ideas! I have a husband that doesn't really like to go out at all! (why didn't I see that before?) However, we have tickets to a college basketball game for Saturday - I can't wait!
