What can I do with the garlic seeds off the stalks of my hardneck garlics? I'm thinking of scattering them to see if they will naturalize. Has anyone had any luck with planting garlic by seed rather than by clove? I've already planted my garlic patch for next year, but when I cleaned up my garlic harvest this weekend, I came away with quite a bowlful of seeds too.

Wow! What a great question! I've always been curious about onion/garlic and if they seeded out or not and if it would work from seed and not bulbs!? I hope someone knows!

Hi Paula,
Those seeds will grow up to be fine garlics, just like their parents, but it will take a few years of nurturing to size them up.

Every year I take a bushel basket of those tiny seeds and plant them like grass seed for my chickens to nibble on in the early spring. When broadcast somewhat thick, you end up with "garlic grass." Taking a nap on it is divine!

Thank you Mary Jane for the info! I will definitely sow the seeds.

I did notice for the garlic I harvested that I allowed to grow full scapes and go to seed, the garlic bulbs were much smaller. So, from what I've read, if you snap the scapes off, then more energy goes into producing a bigger bulb. I'll have to experiment with that a little next summer.
