Well, SOMEBODY had to ask, right?

For us,it's going to be a really scaled down but elegant feast of thankfulness. There will just be the two of us this Thanksgiving, not counting the two eager begging dogs and three curious cats who just have to be involved.

So this year we just bought the breast and drumsticks half of a smallish turkey, which I'm planning to brine.

My Thanksgiving Menu ~

appetizers will be ~
My very special chicken liver and thyme pate mousse
Brie in the round
Assorted crackers
sparkling water with a dash of Pomegranate concentrate

~ The Feast
Roast brined turkey
Southern cornbread dressing
Simple pan gravy
Fresh homemade cranberry relish
gingered honey carrots
Mixed braised leeks and golden peppers

~ The Perfect Ending
freshly made espresso
Pumpkin and cream pie
French no flour dark chocolate cake

Yum! Annika! Wish I could come to your house! I would love to have your French no flour dark chocolate cake recipe!!!

Our foster kids are coming with their children, as well as our foster son's mother and brother. Dinner is going to be very late for us this year since our foster daughter has to work during the day. Please don't be shocked by the menu list - thankfully, our foster son comes from a long line of amazing cooks, so I won't have to do all of this myself (well, a good bit of it...). ;) We'll all be enjoying plenty of leftovers for a few days, that's for sure!

Appetizers -

Pinecone-shaped Garlic Cheese Ball Accented with Almonds, and Served with Assorted Crackers
Olive and Cream Cheese Stuffed Celery
Stuffed Grape Leaves (Or, as my hubby affectionately refers to them, "Lebanese Hand Grenades." They are his grandmother's recipe, a family tradition!)
Kibbe - if I can get to it! - Cooked, not raw!
Assorted Nuts in Their Shells - Ready for Crackin'

Dinner -

Roasted Turkey with Gravy
Spiral Ham with Brown Sugar glaze
Apple and Cranberry Stuffing
7-Layered Salad
Mashed Potatoes
Zucchini Casserole
Mashed Carrot and Turnip served with Slices of Lemon
Broccoli with Melted Cheddar
Candied Yams with Marshmallows
Green Bean Casserole
Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce
Homemade Plain Applesauce
Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Canned Jellied Cranberry Sauce (for the die-hard traditionalists who whined when I said I was making homemade)
Hot Buttered Rolls
Olives, Pickles and Pickled Beets

Dessert -

Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
Cherry Pie
Vanilla Ice Cream
Pumpkin Bread
Banana Bread
Cranberry Orange Nut Bread
Pumpkin Dump Cake
Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Good gravy - that looks like a LOT of food! Please keep in mind, though, that the majority of people dining at the feast will be older boys and men with ravenous appetites! Plus, with the integration of our families, we sure have a lot of family favorites to incorporate so everyone is satisfied!

I am also very pleased - and thankful - to share that most of my vegetables will be coming from my garden this year - thank you to all my farmgirl sisters, because I couldn't have done it without you! - ('just picked a gallon of broccoli yesterday - I am amazed it's still growing strong!!!), and the apples were all hand-picked at the orchard in September!

This year ours will be potluck dinner. We already know who is bringing what but I am not sure for others.

So far this is what we having:
- Turkey with a coat of bacon (I just found out some of my in-laws do not eat Turkey)
- Sausage, peppers and onion pasta
- ham and mashed potatoes
- lots of rainbow cookies
- a cake or two but not sure (what kind...)
- coffee, tea, soda, beers, champagne...whatever they want to drink

We are still debating what to get but the dessert we getting is the rainbow cookies...not sure about the appetizer or entree. Will find out soon.

Good Lord, Nini, how many are you cooking for?

We're having the same thing we always have:
Roast turkey with challah stuffing (homemade stuffing from homemade challah)
Apple/Squash casserole with raisins
red/yellow/purple fingerling potatoes with olive oil garlic and rosemary (I usually do them in the oven, but I may do them on top of the stove this year)
braised brussels sprouts with chicken broth, shallots, and herbs
homemade cranberry sauce with orange segments
cherry/coconut chillover
mixed greens salad with grape tomato and avocado and probably mushrooms and carrots with balsamic vinaigrette
Homemade Italian bread (partly whole-wheat) with roasted garlic and herbs

Dessert: sweet potato merinuge pie, Kentucky Derby pie

There will be 10 for the main meal, and family and friends will be straggling in and out the rest of the day. I kinda like it, though, when everyone shows up all at once, and we have to add tables and chairs - it feels like a real pilgrim celebration! :)

I don't mean to shame anyone, honest! There are just a lot of people who have specific requests and needs. I actually hesitate to tell you that deviled eggs, coleslaw, baked beans and potato salad have been promised to join the table, too, at some point! Thankfully, some are "bringing," others just "begging" - and totally I say "begging" with tongue-in-cheek! ;) It's an honor to have people ask for certain things - far be it from me to refuse anyone! :) I'm just hoping when all is said and done, the leftovers will keep me out of the kitchen for a few days! :)

Amanda - I think I may have mentioned this before, but I was born in Pawtucket! Is Red's Seafood still around? Man - could I go for some lobster and stuffies!!!

@ Nini This is one of our holiday treasures. It's dense and rich and rightfully belongs on a holiday table. Wickedly scrumptious!

Gateau au Chocolat

Serves 12
List of Ingredients ~
7 oz (200 g) of good quality semisweet chocolate or dark chocolate
4/5 cup (200 g) butter
1 cup (220 g) sugar
4 eggs, separated

Directions ~
Preheat oven to 350 F
Line a 9 in (23 cm) cake tin with greaseproof or other non-stick paper and grease.
Break the chocolate into small pieces and melt it with butter over hot water.
Beat the egg yolks with half of the sugar.
Fold in the melted butter and chocolate mixture.
Beat egg whites until frothy by using an electric mixer; gradually add the remaining sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold in the egg whites with the chocolate mixture.
Bake at 350 degrees until a wooden skewer center comes out clean, about 40 odd minutes .
Use a knife to separate the cake from the non-stick paper. The cake is quite sticky and terribly rich!

I like to serve with either fresh berry sauce or a little mound of fresh whipped cream dusted with cocoa or nutmeg. I have also added extracts to flavor the chocolate mix. Our favorite is orange-chocolate with grated orange zest! This is pure chocolate bliss at it's best.

Oh, my! My dinner guests just doubled. So back to town tonight for more groceries. I'm not very frazzeled. Just put ground cumin instead of ground cinnamon in the sweet potatoes. Lucky, I noticed. Just thought it would calm me down a little to share this with you girls. Now back to work.

Your dinners sound elegant! We will have roast turkey with rosemary and sage from the garden, cheesy potatoes from DIL, mashed pumpkin/butternut squash/sweet potato casserole, the old standby for DH..green bean casserole, cranberry jello salad, dinner rolls, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin bars from SIL, cherry and apple pies, coffee, juice, water, pickels/olives.
