It's a scarf that you can make in about 30-45 minutes. I think it would fun to try. Anyone up for the challenge? Post a photo and your time - let's see who's the fastest hook in the west (or east, or south, or midwest - you get the idea).
To be fair, if you don't have the specialty yarn on hand (and/or desire or $$$ to go out and buy it), don't worry about it - you can DIY your own bulky yarn by holding together strands of regular worsted weight and/or other yarns. I'm going to be doing that because I want to make mine for Special Olympics, and their scarves have to be certain colors of Red Heart yarn.
Also for timing yourself - your time starts when you make your first chain.
I'm going to try to squeeze mine in today, but this could really be a "do it on your lunch break" kind of project for the week if you'd like to jump in.
Make one or a dozen - and HAVE FUN!

Ooooo! That sounds like a good challenge :). I may have to try it...although I should really just focus on the things that I'm actually going to crochet for Christmas presents lol. Maybe someone will get a scarf :p haha.

I think this pattern is in complete. When I chain 6 and start DC in third chain, I get 4 DC across (plus the first two chains that usually count as a DC) so it is a total of 5 stitches. Is working back the same as working across the chain? And are you to skip the first DC in each new row? If you don't you will add a stitch every row.

Oh, Julie! Hang on - help is here!
How I've started mine: I chained 5 and DC'd in the 4th ch from hook. That makes your ch 3 the first dc, the dc in the 4th ch your second dc, and of course, the dc in the last chain makes 3. I didn't do that from the pattern, I just did it based on memory from making other stuff with double crochets. When you get to the end of your first row, ch 3 and turn. Skip the first dc, dc in 2nd dc, and dc in the top chain of your original ch3. Repeat this for the rest of the rows. Then you should be able to keep at 3 stitches.
I have to confess, I've started and stopped so many times today - too many interruptions, to-do list items, etc. I'm going to give it a go again this evening and see where I get.

So hopefully everyone hasn't given up...
To make mine the right size (ie 3" wide), I ended up doing 5 stitches instead of 3 with a P hook. I made it to about 4 ft. in 44 minutes (I started at the beginning of a Hawaii 5-0 episode On Demand, and they run 44 minutes).
I'm thinking of trying again with a speed hook (which is an "S") and see if I can do it. Also thinking of trying this as a knitting challenge, too.

I did get it done.
I tried using the P hook and hated it, so I switched to N. That meant I had to increase my stitches to 7 to get it to 3 inches. It took me 56 min. I used red heart super saver yarn and was not a good choice. It made a very stiff scarf and I had to stop several times to rest my hands.
I put a border on it too. To make it the width required by special olympics. |
