My DH just scanned in a bunch of old photos - I love this photo of my mom holding me - sooooo long ago. My mom passed away 12 years ago this month. I still miss her - but we have many memories to keep her alive in our hearts - looking at old photos help with this. I just love to look at old photos. Do you have any old photos you especially like?

YES!! I love old photo's and I have several that have a special meaning to me.
This is my grandmomma from mothers side. I am always told I look so much like her, my looks and my character. This was taken when she and granddaddy were engaged
This is my granddaddy, age 16 :)
AND this one I found 2 yrs ago. My dad and I when I was 6 weeks old. Mother had burned ALL photo's of dad, and I never knew him or saw any picture of him till this one 2 yrs ago. A long sad story but I am SO happy with this picture

Marian - Those are wonderful photos. Your grandmother was beautiful - you must be too. :o)So glad you found the photo of you and your dad.
Do you live near Nijmegen? I have a friend who is from there.

Oh, I love old photos and going through my mom's scrapbooks. She has been gone since February 1994 and my dad since January 1997 and I became the "keeper" of the books.
This photo is from August 1955. My sister, Marilyn; my mom, Evelyn; my oldest sister, Janice; my youngest sister, Gaye Lynn ,being held up by my oldest brother, Noel. I'm the young lady in the front with my brother, Gerry. My dad was taking the photo, which was in front of the picket fence around our farmhouse, cherry trees in the background.

We went to a country school for grades 1-8 and we (most days) rode Ginger, our chestnut bay mare to school. Gerry is in the back, Gaye Lynn in the front and me (squeeze!) in the middle.

Thanks for sharing the memories. The pictures are just wonderful. I had several of my own, but loss them all. However, I can still see them in my mind.

Lorraine, no Nijmegen is not near me at all. It is on the other side of the country. Think a 3 hr ride away. I live in the Northern part and Nijmegen is in the South :)

CJ - those are great old photos - my favorite is the one with all of you on the horse. How fun that you rode a horse to school! I love yours and your sisters curly hair too!
Marian - thanks for letting me know. Too bad - wouldn't that be fun! We met in the early 1970s when I went to England with a group - she was there with a group too. We just clicked and have stayed in touch all these years. She has been to the US a couple times - but I have yet to make it to the Netherlands. Some day...

About that curly hair . . . my mom was always putting home perms in our hair. My sister's was already naturally wavy/curly so her's just was even moreso. My hair is naturally very straight . . . so mine got to be somewhat curly for a little while. I have three sisters and they all have naturally wavy/curly hair. Me? I got the STRAIGHT hair!

Oh I love your pictures. Riding a horse to school, lifetime dream of mine! My Daddy did that, of course he pretty much lived on a horse. I have so many beloved pictures from my family. Some from my own blessed childhood, some from farther back. Couldn't possibly share them all but I'll share this one. This was my great grandmother. She was pretty much a walking saint. Everyone loved her. She was the great beauty of her town in Germany. She was a chef, married and moved to Canada just before the war broke out. Because she was German she was hated and they nearly starved to death. But despite all that she nursed another lady's baby along side her own when the lady didn't have any milk. She's been gone over 40 years and yet those that new her still say what an incredible woman she was. I've been told I look like her, cook like her etc, I can only hope I might be like her in other ways too.

Kimberly - those are fabulous photos. Your grandmother was a beauty - and I love the picture of your mom. Is she holding a birthday cake?
CJ - thanks for sharing... Those are great photos too. The one of you on the tractor is my favorite - you were definitely a farmgirl from a very early age! Or maybe always! And too cute with you and the doll - but you look so serious for such a little girl... About the permanents - my mom use to do that to me too. I have some horrible pictures from grade school - she would frequently give me a perm around the time they took the yearly photos. And my hair is thick and wavy - so after the perms and she would cut it short - I looked like Harpo Marx. Not flattering for a little girl - at least I didn't think so.
Here's another one of me, my mom, and my aunt. I have more - but looking through what my DH scanned - he has a lot more of his family.. Hmmm... Looks like I should do some more scanning... This is fun - please keep 'em coming.
I have a lot of very unflattering photos from the 1970s - ugh, what were we thinking??? Who's brave enough to post some of those photos?

Kimberly - I forgot to mention how elegant your great grandmother looked. I always marvel at how beautifully women dressed and think of how challenging it was to make, clean, iron the clothes. I get tired just thinking about it. But she was definitely a beautiful woman - you are indeed fortunate to look like her!

I really love the old pics...and the ladies in these pics are so beautiful, here is one of my grandmother, I didn't get to meet her she died 3 yrs before I was born. Grandma is on the right and my great Aunt Re on the left  My Dad and me, he died 45 yrs ago yesterday
 My Momma and me, she died in Feb 06 this is my oldest brother Earl on left(he died Aug. 2010, me in middle and younger brother Arthur(Scooter) on right.

Lorraine, Yes I think my mom is holding her cake as this picture was from her fifth birthday. Love the hair cut, huh? My Oma used a bowl to cut her hair. Later on she must have left it to grow because my mom had hair she could sit on at one point. Thanks for the compliment on my Great Grandmother. Yes I think she was very elegant and beautiful. I honestly don't see the resemblence between us. I'm definately NOT the great beauty of my town!!!! :P I love that portrait of her. I've been told that I will be the one inheriting it and I'm very excited to someday give it a place of honor in my home.

Its so fun to look at these photos. I've been busy and meant to scan some more - but no time - yet.
Penny - that's a great photo of you and your dad when you were little, then you and your mom too. My how time flies.
Marian - Its so nice to see your great grandmother smiling - a fantastic smile too... In so many of the old photos, the people were so serious looking. You can see the beauty in so many people - but they would look so much nicer if they just smiled.
Kimberly - wow, that's a great wedding photo. You really are stunning - lovely bride and a lovely setting.
Tamara - glad you got your photos to upload. I had trouble with that too - I think I was so happy I figured it out, that's one of the reasons I started this thread. I noticed your grandparents were smiling too - they look so happy. Doesn't it make a nice difference??
And Paula - what a cutie your dad was on that big horse. He looks like he's enjoying it.
Hope we get some more photos. I'll have to get busy this weekend. Too much work to do right now. Thanks to all of you. I've had a lot of fun looking at the photos. I love the clothes, and the scenery. So fun. thanks again.

This is my Dad more grown up with Champ, the horse he raised from a colt. Champ was his pride and joy until Daddy got called off to Korea and then he found a new home for him before he left.

I can see why Champ was his pride and joy! NICE horse. My Daddy grew up on horseback too. He was riding a stud horse others were scared to ride at 8 years old. I inherited the horse gene too. :) LOVE your picture. Do you have that pictured enlarged and hanging on the wall?

When Daddy came back from Korea, he had a new family to take care of, after my oldest sister came along. So horses were a thing of the past for him. It wasn't until his youngest daughter, me, grew up and finally got a horse that he got to take one more ride again.

This is a poor image, being a picture of a picture. But I have to share this photo that means so much to me. This is my dear grandmother on her favorite horse of all time, a palomino named "Old Pal". I was a horse lover growing up but was never around horses, so Grandma's stories about Old Pal were, in my mind, the stuff of legend. My grandmother died last year and I miss her daily, but the stories and memories live on.
My grandfather on the other side of the family not only farmed with horses but he competed in horse pulling contests and won several years in a row with his favorite team, Pete and Sue. These horses were also legendary in my mind and I have a handbill from the 40's featuring my grandpa and Pete and Sue hanging on my wall. I will see if I can scan it.
Great thread. I am enjoying everyone's photos and stories.
