Love these old photos--though I don't know who I resemble (my mother or father) I search through old photos to try to discern.
Here's a favorite of mine--simply because, it's my Great Grandmother, Theodocia, My Great Grandfather, Herman ("The German") and Grandma's very dour baby sister, Hazel, standing outside the homestead on Park Street. Seems like a normal picture, exept, when you turn it over on the back it says, "50th Wedding Anniversary" and the context seems hilarious, then! 
Herman can't possibly be bothered to look up, and the ladies just seem so thrilled...I had heard that, though they remained married until his death in 1966, their marriage was rocky--he was 35 and she only 18 when they married, mainly because he had a farm and small business and as the eldest, she married to take care of her mother and father since her two brothers were killed in World War I.
There are some pics of me and my dad that I love from when I was small, but I've never scanned them in.

This is my Grandpa in 1947 with his team Pete and Sue. My dad said that as a young boy he used to polish the harnesses for the team before horse pulls and it took hours and hours of work. I'm not sure he enjoyed it nearly as much as my grandpa did.

Pam - that's an amazing photo of your grandmother on her horse. What a sweet story! And I love her horse's name... Then to have your grandfather be such a horse lover too. Very cool poster of him - what a treasured keepsake.
Jonni - I had to lol at your photo after finding out the caption - typical male, right? Too funny..
Here is another photo of my mom when she was younger.I was going to post a photo of my maternal grandparents - but it isn't working for some reason - I think the file is too big. I'll have to work on that...
Thanks for keeping this thread going. I love all these photos...

Does anyone know why some photos won't copy to a MJ thread? I do the same thing - some, no problem - others, I get the dreaded red "X" box???? Any insight out there?

Perhaps it's the format? I use photoshop and if it's in photoshop format it doesn't work. It needs to be a jpeg.

Great photo, Sheri. She was so pretty - can you imagine how much work it took for people (especially women) to dress up like this??? I'm always amazed at the beautiful dresses and clothes they wore. Lovely photo...
By the way, both of the photos I tried to upload were jpgs - one loaded fine - the other won't??? I'm wondering if its the size of the file...

| loved sharing in your memories I too have been scanning the old photos into the computer and making files for both my family and my hubby's. makes me a little sad of all my family who are now gone, still miss my dad to this day |

Patricia - I'd love to see your photos when you get them scanned in. I need to do more too. I have fun when I'm doing it - but frequently, its something that gets put off.... Sounds like a new year resolution - finish scanning... Happy New Year everyone!

Engagement picture of my parents, somewhere in 1944. They got married in August of 1944 so before that. Got this picture a while ago from a niece of my mother's. I hadn't heard from that niece for a few years - they are always travelling - I called her for a chat to see how they were doing, AND also to ask whether she could give me more info about the family history. She told me some info I didn't know AND that she had a picture of my dad. A few days later the picture arrived at my home :) I was stunned to see this, never knew it was even around. Never saw it before so I was very happy when she sent it to me

Oh, this is a fun post! You girls have posted some wonderful photos!
I only have acess to photos for my Dad's side of the family at the moment, and not all of them are scanned yet so I'll share my favorites that have been done so far.
Here is my favorite family picnic picture from the past taken in 1936. My dad was lucky enough to live next door to both sets of grandparents as a child. On the far left standing in the back row is my great Grandma Mary Edlund; The man in front row holding the hat is her brother-in-law August Johnson. Standing in front center is my grandma Margaret Johnson Edlund holding my newborn dad Gerry; to her right is my grandpa Gus Edlund. Standing on the far right are my great grandma Ann Johnson(with a neigbor boy) and my great grandpa James Johnson.
Here is another of my favorites from 1899 featuring three of my great uncles Eric, Paul and Gust Edlund. I just love the way they are all dressed. These are older brothers of my grandpa Gus Edlund.

Here is a photo of my great grandfather Erick Johnson Edlund and his brother August Johnson (my brother is named after him). Erick was injured in a factory accident and lost his leg. If you look carefully at the pic you will notice that his right leg is stuffed with straw. This story is probably what endears this photo to me the most...
And lastly, a photo of great great uncle August Johnson in later years. He worked as a gardener and loved nature. He had a gift for patience and whistling and would call wild birds to sit on his hand. This photo inspired me to beg for a pet bird as a child and started my lifelong interest in birds. Here he is holding one of the birds that would come when called:

I've been doing genealogy research on this side of the family in Sweden and recently learned that Erick and August had three more brothers - two of whom died soon after their arrival in the USA - and an older sister who stayed in Sweden to run the family farm which is still owned by relatives today.

Marian - I bet you were so happy to get the engagement photo of your parents. How nice for you....
Marilyn - those are amazing photos.. That picture of your great uncles is priceless. And your g-g uncle with the bird is remarkable - first because he was able to call birds to him - And that someone caught it on film... Wow...
This reminds me of another item to put on my resolution list - finish scanning photos. Keep 'em coming.... I just love looking at all of them. Thanks everyone.

I have been scanning old photos, also. I then go to Walgreen's website, upload them and make photo books. I made one for my husband for Christmas of our 30 years together. It took a lot of time, but it was worth it. You can even add pages of just writing if you have a story to tell. The books are hard cover and a great keepsake. I am now working on one with all the photos I have of myself when I was growing up.

You know, it never occured to me until now.....how remarkable that photo with the bird really is. My dad says it was taken in the early 1920's. And you ladies are right, it was a lucky chance that someone else was able to catch it on camera.

This is my mother's side.
Al And Blythe Hicks [my great grandparents]. Grandma Betty Hicks is the young girl in the picture. Al's parents Bill and Indalee Whetsel Hicks. And Al's brother James and his wife and brother-in-law with his sister Lena behind.
Al in his roadster in the 1920's. He was a car salesman and one of the early commuters in southern California. The Great grands moved the family out there from Nebraska in the 1920's. Al did good until the Great Depression.
Al and Blythe Hinkley Hicks when they married in 1922. Often weddings in farm areas were just a simple ceremony in a relative's house with a family dinner afterward. They didn't have these huge expensive weddings seen nowadays.

This is great-grandma Blythe in the early 1970's. She and I are a lot alike, I found. She had a fondness for unusual hats, exploring ghost towns of the west and writing about her adventures. She also took and saved vast amounts of photos [lucky for me!]. I ended up with her pictures and that is the reason I started scanning - so I could share with other members of the family.
This has to be one of my favorites! I discovered it in Nonnie's box of photos [Nonnie is Italian for Grandma]. This is my Aunt Kathy, My mother Judy and their sister Janice about 1951. Kathy is so cute. And my mother was such a pretty girl.
Oh, here's me in 1966. Can you tell I look like Dad instead of Mom?

Carla - thanks for posting the pictures. They're all great - but I love the wedding photo of your great-grandparents and the photo of your mom and her sisters. So cute. Too bad you couldn't load the one of your grandmother - she sounds like a wonderful person who left you many memories - besides a lot of photos! :o) I had trouble with one of my grandmother too. Don't know why. But thanks again - they're great.
