I have read that raw milk is better for you, but I have also read that it is "dangerous" due to not being pasteurized.

What's the real scoop? And, is there any way to get raw milk other than leasing a cow?

I've heard both things too and I don't know which is right. I suppose it is undeniable that heating any type of food diminishes it's nutritive value. I guess the danger of raw milk is how it's handled. People all over the world drink raw milk and it doesn't kill them.

I also was told by someone on this site (I'm sorry, I can't remember who) that it's not the pasteurization that causes problems, but homogenization. Now, my daughter has a tendency to be a little lactose intolerant and when I stumbled across a local dairy that offers non-homogenized milk I snatched up a gallon to test it out. She really didn't have the usual problems with it, but she's only one person, so that's not really scientific. It tasted better too. Unfortunately I would have to drive a pretty fair distance to buy it all the time.

My family drinks only raw milk and I am of course one of the people who believe it is much much healthier. I recomend a book called " The true story of milk" by Ron Shmidt. It really explains why it is better.
I am sure if milk is handled wrong, or the animal is unhealthy it would be bad for you...of course..anything would be. With cleanliness and healthy animals it is pretty darn easy to produce fresh raw healthy milk. I love it!

Yep....all that. And I have 3 other families who enjoy the milk too. She produces 5 and 1/2 gallons most days (5 and 1/2 months into her lactation) so even with using it constantly we couldn't use it all. We make alot of butter and freeze it and make whipped cream when we need it too.

Jenny,
I was wondering how long could you keep raw milk in the fridge, say in a glass or plastic bottle? Does it keep for a shorter time than commercial milk? I also buy pasteurised but not homogenised milk. In Australia, you can't sell non-pasteurised milk, you can't even use it in cheese making if you are selling the cheese - is it the same there? And do you mix milk from different milkings or would it be better to keep them separate?
Thanks for all your great cow and milk advice - I have seen a photo of Mona somewhere else on this site and I want one just like her - what a sweetie!!
Best wishes,
Jayne

Yep, Mona is the best!
I don't mix milk from different milkings. I have relatives and close friends who get milk from us...no real "sales". Although they do buy my grain and hay...so I do get something out of it for sure! Barter is the best!
I am not real sure how long raw milk would last compared to store milk, since we never have milk around more than a couple days. I think it is much sweeter and fresher tasting...I can't my finger on it but there is just a "store milk" taste that I don't like. I never would sit down and drink a glass of store milk, but I do that every day with Mona's milk. And each gallon has at least a pint..sometimes a quart ...of cream on top (after sitting for 12 hours or so) for all the other goodies. I keep the milk in gallon and 1/2 gallon wide mouth glass jars (easier to skim the cream from).

Oh Jenny,
You are making me SOOO jealous - sounds so delicious!! I buy my milk from the farmers market here, so as close as I can get to the 'real' thing, but I cannot wait to have my own cow!! Thanks for the advice,

There is truly nothing so delicious as real fresh raw milk. We never kept it around more than about 36 hours, because it's coming at you so fast you just don't need to! We fed a bunch to some feeder pigs and even poured a bunch down the drain. We had two flat plastic pans for rising the cream in the bottom of the refrigerator. Chores meant bringing in the bucket of milk (stainless steel, with a lid). The pan of milk from the previous morning would be skimmed, and the cream would go into glass quart jars. Then the milk was poured into a pitcher. The plastic pan was washed in a 5% bleach solution and rinsed, and the new milk was poured in to rise. We'd then drink the cold skim. What wasn't used was pitched when the next milk came in. We made a lot of cottage cheese, yogurt, and mozzarella, as well as butter and ice cream. Man, I still miss that ice cream! There's nothing on the market that can touch it.

If only they'd had the statin drugs when we had our cow! Then we could have kept her. But with hubby facing cholesterol of 267, we had to cut back on the dairy fat and she had to go. Interesting how much of it is genetic; my cholesterol at the time was 98, with HDLs of 42, and I used more of the dairy products than he did.

I am with Jenny! I know that "officials" say that pastuerized and homoginized milk is the only way to go....but if you have had fresh milk and other dairy products...well there is just no comparision...
I thought my 3 year old was "allergic" to all dairy, but she handles raw goats milk just fine. When milk is heat treated it destroys all of the live and good enzymes that aid in digestion.
Now, I just need to move somewhere I can have my own goats...I pay $5 for a half gallon of raw goats milk!! Oh how I wish Jenny and her goat maid friend were closer!

Bring on the yummy raw milk!

I typed this big long post and my computer ate it!!!! Arrrgh

Anyway....let me see if I can remember all of this. We've been drinking raw milk for about 3 yrs now. Have had our own cow for about 2 1/2. I do feel that it has been beneficial to my family's health. In fact, when our cow was not in milk and we bought store milk, my youngest son ended up having to take a trip to the ER. He does not tolerate homo, past. milk at all. His tummy needs the beneficial enzymes.

IMO, store bought milk does have a taste. It tastes like plastic!!! It's also nice to know that the milk we drink comes from an animal that isn't given any drugs, is treated with love (LOTS of it) and the milk is clean and fresh.

Here are a few links that might be helpful to you:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/tables/2006-08-06-raw-milk.htm
http://www.realmilk.com/where1.html

In one of my favorite David Sedaris stories he talks about his sister, Amy who, after watching the "fear segment" of her local news declares that you can die from applesauce but leaves out the part that in order to do so, you have to directly inject it into your veins.

There's a lot of information out there on raw milk, both good and bad. Look at the facts. Talk to people that have cows or drink raw milk and then make your own decision. I firmly believe that I have a greater chance of getting sick at a restaurant than from drinking milk from a cow I know is healthy and the milk is clean.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention. My teenage son has issues with high cholesteral. The doctors finally completed genetic testing and determined that his is greatly caused by genetics. When they looked at his blood samples ON STORE BOUGHT 2% it was CONSISTENTLY HIGHER than when he was drinking raw WHOLE milk. The dietician really had to eat her words after that one. She gave me such a hard time about this and then she was wrong!!!

The Untold Story of Milk by Dr. Ron Schmid is a good book to read as well.

Hope this helps.

That is the book I meant..just screwed up both the title AND his name..jeesh!! Very good one.
Gosh Katie..I wish you WERE Closer!!! I am milking for my friend again for the next few days..only milking 4 this morning and threw out more than 2 gallons of milk from her goats. She can't find anyone to take it right now! When she is home she keeps it and does things with it, but being out of town she dosnt' try to keep it. I feel like I am just sinning throwing out that goat milk!! I just can't use it myself either. Dang.

Oh, I want a cow.... Jenny or Carla, I've been wondering now that Mona is (hopefully) With Child, at what stage and for how long are you unable to get milk for yourselves? Thank you for the raw milk sites. I plan to head there... and dream of raw milk. By the way, we find the organic store bought milk vastly better tasting than regular. I've been wondering what raw milk is like...

Most people dry up their cows for two months prior to calving so they can put that effort towards the calf and have colostrum and all. I may dry up Mona for 3 months since she will be calving at least 2 and 1/2 months later than last year. Otherwise she would be in milk for over a year straight. I just want to be kind to her. BUT...giving up having milk for that long is not my idea of fun.

how long after calfing do you have to wait to milk again so the baby gets the colostrum and gets weened. Do you milk before weening that makes the most since becuse if a calf is weened I assume like most mammals the milk dries up.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

You milk for the first time 12 hours after they calve and keep milking twice a day. I froze alot of colostrum...and fed some to the chickens. It is fit for us to drink after about a week. I waited 10 days. You can really tell when it isn't so yellow and thick anymore. She produced about a gallon and 1/2 for us plus what the calf took at each milking. She produces 5 and 1/2 gallons a day now. I only kept the calf for 2 weeks since he was a bull calf. He was sold and raised on milk replacer. A calf that stays with her mom would nurse for about 3 months..and YES..you milk the cow twice a day the whole time. Otherwise she would not produce as much after the calf is weaned...supply and demand. Mona should give more next year..I have heard that the first year they don't give as much as the following. Wow.

Oh, Aunt Jenny,

I feel terrible that anyone would have to throw away goat's milk! I sell goat's milk soap at my local farmer's market (from melt-and-pour goat's milk soap base) and I have had several people ask for goat's milk fudge. I don't have goats or a source of goat's milk locally, so I just have to take it as a suggestion for future products.

Too bad it doesn't ship!

Check outhttp://www.organicpastures.com for more info on raw milk.

I have been buying from them even though it's pricey. The milk comes frozen via ups. I would prefer raw goat but there is a dirth here in Barstow area.

My grandparents always kept a milch cow and I loved helping strain and cool the milk.

Anybody willing to ship raw goat frozen???

blessings,

Holly

ps-- we really like thier milk and it has never been spoiled (of course it's only a 4-5 hour trip to get to us).

This is the kind of country I truly long for, but don't see it ever happening. I would love to have experienced all you have in milking and making the products from milk. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Thank you for the links, Carla. I'm a milk drinker and love dairy products, so I clicked onto the last link where you find raw milk in your area. I found a place in Pennsylvania (less than 20 miles) that I'll check out. It sells raw liquid milk, which is illegal for sale here in New Jersey (although you can buy raw milk cheese and yogurt). I'm very curious about the differences between raw and commercial milk. I'll let you know how I like it.
