I wanted to see if anyone knows what could be wrong? For awhile now everytime I eat seems like it just keeps piling up, like I can't swallow it all the way. I have to drink a ton to actually wash it down so I can breathe good. It hurts very bad when it goes down. And I burp like ungodly amounts. It hurts up high between my breasts and a dull ache in my back, it feels like heartburn pressure or pain in my back ,,, Really weird. Thanks so much for any help.
~~Blessings, Mikki Jo

My guess is Hiatal Hernia,I have a small one and my symptoms are not as bad as yours but I have to eat small amounts of food at a time and a lot of things don't agree with me. Th pain is under my rib cage on the left. Look it up under google or web md, and go see you doctor. You have been under a lot of stress it could be your nerves or who knows what. NANCY JO

I have GERD and that is exactly the way I feel when eating. Sometimes it hurt so bad to swallow or I felt like I couldn't swallow. The doctor put me on Protonix and I am fine most days but there are some foods that I just can't tolerate. Check Webmd.com Hugs, Kathy |

I have had the same problem in the past and it was a hiatal hernia. The best thing that helped me to improve it was to eat small meals (maybe 5 small meals rather than 3 big), take tiny bites and drink something hot with meals. I still have issues once in a while, but it is better. It is also made worse by stress, so keep that in mind. Also, it runs in families. My grandma, mom, and uncle have all had hiatal hernias. Best of luck with this.
Hugs & blessings,
Brenda

Another tip if it is a hiatal hernia (my dad has one, plus a family friend had one) is that you should drink your beverages whenever possible through a straw, in order to eliminate as much air going into your throat as possible. And don't suck around the bottom of the empty glass with the straw after you drink all the liquid, since you just introduce air into your body that way too.
It also sounds like maybe a gall bladder problem? When do you see your doctor about this?

I have the same problem, the things that help me are smaller bites, chew more, have liquids to drink, and slow down a little more during meals. I notice it most often with breads.
I think I kinda did this to myself when I worked and had about 10-15 minutes to down my food, it's been hard to break the bad habits.

It also could be damage from acid reflux. I would go see a doctor. I hope you feel better soon!

I'm going to give my 2 cents worth and guess gall bladder. If you are having a lot of belching and gas, nausea and the pain high up (it doesn't necessarily have to be on the right side)can all be symptoms. I don't know about the difficulty swallowing.

Ok, and another opinion here:
I agree with everything said here, but you might have a few things going on.
1.) Hiatal hernia symptoms: the tight feeling, can't get the food down, squeezing in your chest especially after eating. Hiatal hernias are also very common in women after childbearing.
2.) Acid Reflux (GERD:Gastrointestinal Esophageal Reflux Disease (new diagnosis name for frequent heartburn) Also common after childbearing, stress, caffeine, spicy foods
3.) Gallbladder disease: also common in childbearing aged women: The 5 F's (of which you don't fit all of them, but this is just a pnemonic for nursing students: fat, fair, fertile, female, forty. But the symptom of the chest discomfort and the shooting to the back pain are both classic symptoms of GB disease.
So in conclusion:
Hiatal Hernia, eat small portions, chew and swallow well, have liquids nearby, use the Protonix or whatever medication you and your doctor decide upon. Sit up straight during meals and do not recline for at least 1 hour after eating. Also avoid gas producing foods like: broccoli, beans, cauliflower, etc...whatever foods those are for you. Oh, and also avoid caffeine, carbonated beverages and tight clothing around the midsection.
GERD, same as above and the addition of antiacids as recommended by your physician.
GB disease, see your MD for a definitive diagnosis on this one. If it is GB disease, it can mimic a heart attack. GB's can also go gangrenous on you too...not a pretty picture there I'll tell you!!
Hope this helps Mikki Jo!!

Mikki, I suffered terribly from similar symtoms a few years ago...even ended up in the ER twice-though I was having a heart attack! First they treated me for acid reflux, then I had my gallblader (& most everything else) scanned... They found nothing. One day when I was whining about how bad I felt, a friend told me her sister had the same symtoms until she stopped drinking coffee. I thought that sounded silly...it HAD to be something bigger, right? But I was willing to try it because I felt so bad. I quit drinking (caffinated) coffee & my symptoms went completely away. Completely.
Now, I am not suggesting you shouldn't see a doctor. You should. But if you are a coffee drinker it might be a simple answer. Sure hope so! Rhonda

Wow a lot of great help and info. Thanks so much. I feel much better but will still be having the scope ran September 4th. I'm just thankful for now because I feel so much better. I ended up with pleurisy a few days ago, which was another problem altogether. Geeesh, I feel like I'm falling apart lol.

I'm going to agree with Aunt George and say Acid Reflux--I experience the exact symptoms--especially the pain in my back and chest--that you describe, Mikki.
I REALLY started experiencing this when I went through my divorce at 25, and it was all stress related, I guess. I worked 3 jobs, and still had no money, and I worried constantly. They actually took me to the emergency room one night when I had an "attack". Felt like a heart attack, to me, and my mom decided that with all the pressure and stress, she'd take me. Turns out, I had REALLY terrible acid reflux. Did the pepcid (prescription) because that was really all that was out then, and it eventually subsided, along with all my stress.
I still have an episode every now and again, but it's usually when I'm very upset.
I know you've had a lot going on lately, maybe this is the culmination?
