I am NOT Martha Stewart Julia Childs or Betty Crocker, tho I have channeled my inner Betty at times.. lol!

So my Q&A is...has anyone here tried making homemade Vanilla extract?

I was reading about making vanilla extract in my Oct/Nov issue of MJF magazine and am interested in trying it... the recipe called for either Brandy/Vodka or Bourbon.... I thought I would use Vodka.. but then got to wondering if it mattered if I use vodka made from grain or from potatos... I have a bottle of 'Dry Fly' Vodka as they have a local distillery here in Spokane...it is a grain vodka....
any suggestions of thoughts?

There is a thread on making vanilla extract under Home Safe Home, I think it is there. I am making my own for the very first time and I used Vodka made from grain. Mine is pretty much ready so I opened it to smell it and take a little taste and it is incredible! So much better than store bought in my opinion. I don't know if it matters if you use grain or potato. That is a good question.

Thanks for reminding me!! Duh. I grew up on homemade vanilla. It is awesome. However, when we moved here to the midwest, I got addicted to the Mexican vanilla which is 10 million times more potent and rich than regular storebought. I think I'm going to do this too from organic. Yay!

Hey Grace,

Another good source for beans is:

They have Tahitian, Madagascar Bourbon beans. I have ordered a few times from them ans have been very pleased.

I see that you already have a bunch of good advice, but I can't help adding my two cents
Just make sure that you keep it corked up tight so that the booze doesn't evaporate!

Thanx Sharon for the 2nd source to buy beans....

Annika... lol! of for sure,(actually I didn't even think about that...good point),,don't want it to evaporate.... lol! aacckk with what I am going to spend on the beans, the last thing I want is to open a bottel only to find it dry as a bone! lol!

I think since it takes weeks & weeks to ferment,,, I might start asap....& make a few 'gift bottles' of vanilla for some of my 'Suzy Homemaker' friends who like to bake... as a Christmas gift. I can buy some really cute bottles at the "Cost Plus~World Market" shop in Spokane to put the vanilla extract in. Then combine it with a wooden spoon & package of recipe cards.

You gals are awesome!!!,,,thanx again for the sites to order & the reminder about corking...
I know if ever I need resources, ideas & help,,, I can find it here @ MJF.
