Last weekend I was given 2 croched rag rugs from a 95yr old lady, Miss Sarah. She was my DH "other mother" growing up. This lady was amazing. Up and getting around just fine, sharp as a tack in her wit, knew current events and recited poetry she had written in her younger days. She also had hardly any gray hair!!! It was still light brown!
She gave us these 2 rugs and then handed me a 3rd one she was working on. She said she had taught herself how to make them. She tried to explain how she started them,but I didn't get it. Then she had me crochet a little in the stitch she showed me. Since she taught herself she didn't know what the stitch was called. I can crochet a single and a double. This stitch is a cross between the two. I'd like to know how often I increase to keep this round rug flat. Miss Sarah said when it started to curl then I should put extra stitches in. Also she hand stitched the fabric strips together. I can do this on the machine...right?
These are beautiful rugs and I'd love to finish the one she gave me and maybe make more. Anybody know how to make these? Give me some concrete tips. If we lived closer to her I'd go back and have her show me more. She was such fun to talk to.

the stitch sounds like a half double crochet you set up like a double meaning yo hook go through fabric yo pull back through fabric at this point you pull off all stiches with one yarn over like a single crochet . If this is how it was done then it is a half double crochet. She is correct you increas where needed. Meaning if it cups add more stitches if it is wavey do not add any stitchs for a long time as you have two many. Best to tear out those type of things before they cup or get wavey. Yes you can use your sewing machine to do what she did. But if it is a real old piece which it could be with a 95 + year old. Then I would continue to do it the way it was started. To keep continuety (sp) and make sure I use the same age fabric and thread and type of fabric.

I'd love to see pictures. I love rag rugs. I saw an advertisement in one of those little booklets you can pick up for free for a woman who makes them on a loom but I lost it and she doesn't advertise there anymore. I might be able to make my own with that method.

Sunshine,
I guess its a half double crochet. Thanks for telling me. I never heard of that stitch. The rugs and material are new. This is something she just taught herself to do recently. Like in the last year. Her daughter has been hunting yard sales for old sheets or just any old material to make strips out of. I'm finding out I'm too picky. I thought the material had to be the same weight or type, and you need a pattern,but these folks are just using whatever works. It looks great! Guess I need to loosen up!

I've always wanted to work on a loom too. I have no idea how to get a chance to do that though. They only ones I've ever seen were in a museum. Guess I'll figure out these croched rugs first.

Better Homes and Gardens put out a small (96 pages) hardcover book called Rug Making and in one of the pictures of the projects it show a lady sitting on the floor making a rug using fabric strips and crocheting them into a large round rug. There are other crocheted rugs, along with braided rugs and hooked rugs, etc. I've seen these books around before in this area at second hand shops, etc. Bet you could find one pretty easily.
