We have several apple trees on our property, and this year is a bumper crop of apples, however..... for the past several years, we have noticed dark spots on the skins of the apples. This does not appear to affect the fruit, however it is somewhat unsightly, especially when you want to share the fruit with friends etc... Any ideas what might be causing this? And how can it be prevented? We do not spray our trees at all, and would prefer not to have to do this.

It is a bug but it doesn't hurt anyone or anything. There's a song, don't remember what it is called,from the sixties and there is a line "spots on my apples" and "leave me the birds and the bees" and it is referring to when fruit was sprayed heavily with DDT. I prefer spots and I just tell people we don't spray so they will have protein with their apples. Ha Ha.

What variety of apples do you have? Some are more suseptable. The honey crisp gets them real bad. Can't remember what hubby called it. It wasn't a bug, though it depends on the spot. Some are real holes backfilled - those are bugs, others are just dark spots. I'll try to ask him tonight.

Bitter pit is a calcium deficiency that forms black spots on your apples. You may want to take a few to your extension service and see if that is what it is.

| Thanks Laurie, I will do that. We have Sweet 16, and another type, I don't remember what they are. The fruit is good, but the spots look terrible. They don't go through to the meat of the apple, they just stay on the skin, and look like dirt, but it doesn't wash off. I would prefer not to spray if this is a bug, but if it is a calcium deficiency, I will have to do some research as how to treat that. They make good sauce, and apple butter.... Thanks all:) |
