We were told from our extension office, that our county is not a good place to grow blueberries - in fact impossible. We bought 2 bushes last year, but they died, We got another one this year, and it's doing well. We still need to get another for cross pollination, but will see if we can get them to grow anyway.
This year we are buying them from a Farm Market. Is $27.99 for 10 lbs. a good price?

Have you thought about keeping them in large pots? I have all mine in pots and they are doing pretty good. I was given them by a friend who pulled them out of the ground last year because they weren't doing so great.

Save your coffee grounds for your berry bushes, they'll help with the acid they need.

You can also mulch with pine needles. I started amending my soil almost a year before I planted mine. They seem to be doing okay.

I live in "Blueberry Land" but our's are low bush blueberries which mean they grow only a couple inches off the ground and we have to "rake" them to harvest them. 27.99 for 10 lb. is about what they sell retail here for from some people during the season (right now). The large corporations sell them a little less, about $22.00 Good Luck!

| Our blueberry bushes are in raised beds. I'll admit, it's not for the soil so much as to keep out the critters. We laid down chicken wire, placed the frame over it, and dumped in the soil. My husband amended it with acid, peat moss & manure, and amends each spring after things have thawed, lays down fresh newspaper and mulch. So far, success. Check out your state university agricultural extension center and see if they have a daily RSS feed. Michigan State sends feeds on when to fertilize, prune, and the latest pest to keep watch for. We've learned a lot from them. Good luck. |

Hi from Florida! I grow blueberry bushes in huge plastic pots. I ordered mine from Kentucky 3 years ago on the internet, and they are doing so good. I was told to never fertilize them but water them a lot in the summer. I also put my coffee grounds on the soil around them about once a month. Other than that I do nothing and they are such a joy. I get enough from 8 plants to freeze for smoothies and I made some pies last year too. I paid $50 for the plants including shipping and they came 12" ready to plant, and gave a lot the first year. After the first year they were 3' tall. Hope this helps, and good luck!
