My sil used to make stuff for a craft store and taught me a great tip to get a weathered apearance to newly painted wood. Paint it, sand off the paint from corners and other "weathered areas" then dip it in wood stain and let it drip off. She got the stain free from the local recycling center. It looks like the wood weathered when the paint wore off. It could be made from already weathered word but that might leave lead-based paint chips, which you wouldn't want in your home.
