We have a beautiful red-headed baby girl!!! Here is the birth story.

We were two weeks and two day overdue. We went into the hospital on Friday 8am to try for another induction with pitocin and if nothing worked, probably a c-section. We get hooked up to the pitocin and the first real contraction sets in. We were being monitored and were in the process of switching over to the mobile monitors so that we would have the freedom to move around and use various positions in labor. The lead nurse starts checking for the heart rate and says she is verifying which heart rate is which, mothers or baby's. All of a sudden she says that the fetal heart rate is down to 50 and orders the other nurse to stop the pit! Stop the pit! She also orders her to take the bag off so there's no mistakes. She then orders the other nurse to call my doctor and tell him to get back to the hospital cuz they are going to need to do a c-section right away. Then the room fills with nurses. One is putting me on oxygen, and they have me get up on all fours to see if changing position will help the baby's heart rate increase, which it does. Another nurse is shaving my stomach while another is giving me a drug to help quickly digest the contents of my stomach. They then catheterize me and take me down the hall to get an epidural in. My husband has called the doula who is on her way to help and he's getting scrubs on. The doctor gets there within about twenty minutes and starts testing me for how numb I've gotten. They proceed and start with the c-section. I can still feel quite a bit and it was pretty painful. Then I hear "it's a girl" and some half hearted crying. Also "get a load of that red hair". The doctor says that the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck, mid-section and between her legs, and that was the reason I never dilated or went into labor. She never could have dropped. My husband Gregg goes over to check out the baby, and my doula comes and holds my hand while they stitch me up. Meanwhile the epidural has caused a massive headache and pain in my shoulder, which I'm sure means I'm gonna stroke out. I ask for more anesthesia and I go unconscious. Gregg has gone to the room with the baby and warms the baby on his chest with his shirt off to start bonding with the baby. The nurse didn't know what to make of that. I come back in the room and finally get to hold her.

Her name is Gwendolyn Saige and is 7lbs 10 oz and 21 inches long. My husband will help me post a picture later.

Hope I don't scare anyone with the story but it was not what we had hoped and planned for. But in the end I'm just glad that she is here and we love her to bits.

PHEW!! Julie, what a story.. Thank god for modern medicine! Really, what happened was anything but a 'natural' experience but the bottom line is a healthy baby and healthy mama!! Congratulations to you. I'm so glad the story ended so well.. Keep us posted and here's to a quick recovery for you!

Oh Julie! Congratulations! She sounds beautiful, I can't wait to see that photo!

My story was strikingly similar. I had an emergency C-section after going one week over due to the cord being wrapped around my son's neck too. He had dropped though, and my labor did finally start on its own so we thought we were good to go. (We had had a super healthy pregnancy the whole way.) But about five hours into it, they broke my water, I jumped to being dilated to 4 and all hell broke loose! With each contraction, Jackson's heartrate went way down and within about a half-hour, I was shaved, drugged and strapped to a table too. My midwife assured me that it was the only way to save the baby and ohmygod! she was right. So he came out huge and healthy, but the cord that gave him life became a problem at the end. Jackson needed some help in the Special Care Nursery for a day and half due to his meconium intake, but after that, everything was a breeze.

Now I don't want to scare the pregnant moms either! But I want to tell Julie and anyone else who fears a C-section, that while it's totally not the preferred way to go, it's not awful. Recovery can take a while (up to 6 weeks they say), but I was fully recovered in 2 weeks' time. My advice: the best way to recover from a C-section is to walk around, a lot, as soon as you feel able to do so but not a moment sooner than that. Walk around your room, walk the halls in the hospital and walk around your neighborhood. But don't push it. I pushed it on the second night by entertaining visitors and really paid for it the next day! Just listen to your body and let it heal...you WILL feel normal again!

Sigh...all of these memories of childbirth! It was only 6 months ago tomorrow that Jackson was born! Sometimes it still feels like yesterday (for the good memories! the bad ones really do fade!!!)

Love to all of the babies,

Catherine

Congrats, Julie! My story is strikingly similar also. But we had a healthy girl who now has two healthy girls, so modern medicine saved my life and hers. So glad your little girl and you are safe! Take care now and let yourself heal before doing anything too strenuous. It is good to walk and be up and around but no vaccuming! :)

Peace

Julie,
Congratulations to you all!!! And I love the name!!! I know what you went through, my first son we lost his heart twice and it had decels three times before they FINALLY took me for an emergency c-section, he was born with an APGAR of 2(yes that doctor lost her license after this)...so scarry and not at all what I wanted or hoped for. But like you I was so thankful he was ok. I have had 3 emergency c-sections (all for different reasons) and I agree with Cathrine, walk around as SOON as you can but DONT overdo it!
I will be thinking of you and your new little one!! All the best!!
Hugz!

You both look gorgeous in your pink outfits. I'm so glad that things went so well even if it wasn't what you had planned.

Julie,
What a sweet baby. Congratulations! What great story you have to tell her! My daughter was born with a knot in her cord! Even the doctor was completely puzzled by that! But, she has proven to be quite a little acrobat in life (she's 4) so maybe that explains it. I bet your little dolly will be too...she must have been doing all kinds of flips to get so wrapped up!
Best wishes.

Congratulations Julie on your sweet little baby girl. So glad you both made it through fine and are healthy. You look so beautiful for just having a baby 24hours before. Must be that new Mama glow.

When I was in nursing school I trained in the birthing center for awhile and helped deliver and care for a few babies. I observed the most beautiful thing with all the Mamas. They would be in so much pain and one of the Mom's didn't even want to push the baby out. As soon as that baby was born and in there arms it was as if every bit of pain was erased and they were the only two people in the room. The doctor would be working on the placenta and putting in stitches and going through the process and all that the Mom's were concerned about was looking into there precious baby's eyes and it was as if they fell deeply in love in that instant and nothing else mattered. It was so wonderful to be a part of their experience.

I wish you all the best Julie!!!

Love and Blessings,

Missy
