Our big girl, Rose (and Violet's favorite dog and nanny), started limping terribly a few days ago, and by Friday, wouldn't put weight on her back right leg. Today she went for x-rays, and it was what I expected...a torn ACL. I recall Alee's dog having the same issue. It just happens I guess, with all the squirrel chasing and being the boss of the world that Rose takes on. Surgery scheduled for Thursday at about $1,000 and some change. She's only 7, and I can't imagine our world without her.

Think good thoughts for the girl as she goes through this!!

Thanks, Connie...I was more worried that we were going to have to make a tougher decision--I was just hoping it wasn't cancer or something like that. We really didn't have much that we were going to do with our tax return except maybe go on a trip (which seemed extravagant with gas prices) so there it is. I'm just thrilled that we didn't have to make a more serious decision in regard to her health.

Thanks, Lisa. She's a very good girl and we love her--Violet especially. She pats her and says, "Rose a vewey big boy!" But she also lays down with her in the kitchen on her bed. Thank goodness for flea control!

Oh I am so sorry but at least it is something that can be fixed. I understand Violet's attachment - she is a girl for my heart - animal lover all the way. I will keep your sweet Rose in my prayers and know that she will come thru without distress and is already on the path to healing. Love and Light with tons of Hugs. Tell Violet that I am keeping on eye out for her sweet Rose.

I am so relieved, Grace, and I never thought I'd say that about spending $1k. But she's beyond worth it--when Violet was very small, about 3 weeks old, if I was doing dishes and didn't hear her cry right away, Rose would go bounding into the nursery, then back into the kitchen, then back to the nursery, sticking her big ole' nose in between the crib rails to touch Violet and make sure she was comforted. Then Rose would give me a "look" when I came in as if to say, "you took your sweet time, didn't ya!" Violet has inherited my boundless love for animals, the same one you and I share. I hope she never ever looses sight of it. Violet is still, however, on the fence about snakes.

I will make sure Rose knows how many wonderful thoughts and all the healing light she's surrounded with. Tonight, she's coming home to a good dinner!

Jonni- yep poor sky dog has the same thing but our vet said hers was only a rear last year with the possibility of a non surgical resolution. Unfortunately she is not doing too well if she does anything more than walk. We are scheduling surgery too. Poor doggies!

So you didn't do the surgery right off the bat, then, Alee? I think this was the same issue that Rose had in the early Autumn, but she must have only strained it and by last week, the damage was done.

I'm sorry to know that poor Skye dog isn't doing better--it's terrible to watch them struggle. The only thing that has been good for Rose during all this is that I've helped her lose weight on my restrictive diet I've had her on! It's helped immensely!

Oh I would love to show Violet the wonderful world of snakes... I had a huge bull snake when I was in elementry school because they needed someone to take care of it during the summer break and I took such good care of it that it grew too large in the summer for the school to take it back - Yep, I grow them good!!!
Maybe that is why I have such old animals - some call me a witch - no what they call me something close to that but I think it might start with another letter... Hugs and laughter keeps us going strong.

Jonni, prayers out to you and Rose. My DD's English Bulldog, Tank, is having the same surgery tommorrow. She had the other leg done six months ago and now tore the other one. She came through it well. I hope Rose does too!

I'm so sorry, Jonni. But relieved it isn't something worse. I'll be thinking of her on Thursday and sending her all my positive thoughts and prayers. Let me know if there's anything we can do. And keep us posted.

Jonni- no at the time the x rays didn't support it, but if Sky runs around at the barn- even if we didn't go for a ride, she is lame for a month or more. She just barely is recovering from last time. It breaks my heart.

Jonni, I will be praying and thinking of her. I hope the surgery is quick and she has a speedy recovery and is back to chasing all those bad squirrels soon.

Thanks to all of you for your good thoughts for Rose. She was in good spirits last night, happy to be home--I think they gave her a double dose of pain meds because she was pretty care free.

Oh, Grace! That's hilarious! He was too big to take back to school!!!??? I'm sure your mother was thrilled....I never had a real opinion on them either way, but my father, bless him, had a total phobia. Apparently, growing up on a farm in rural Louisiana picking blackberries each summer sort of "fixed" him on snakes. He would literally pass out, even if one was on tv. As a little one, I thought it was sort of funny, now I realize he was truly terrified!

Violet has a blue and white striped ribbon belt that she refers to as a "snake" and throws it in the floor and yells, "Mahmee, Mahmee--lut! It a snakie!!" and then when I arrive, she jumps behind my legs...Silly kiddo

@Diane--that's my concern, is that she'll also tear the other side. They said there is a 50/50 chance. I wonder why that is?

@Janice, I'll keep you and David posted. Apparently there is little to know therapy after the surgery, just trying to keep a 92 lb. dog still for 2 weeks or so until her stitches come out. That's the good news, though, is that she's continuing to lose weight and I'm happy about that. That can only make recovery easier on her. Such a large framed dog, it really would be so much worse if she were the 115 she was a few years back.

The vet called yesterday and said that her bloodwork showed elevated liver enzymes, but they think that's due to the Rimadyl she's been taking since Friday for pain. It's not super over the limit, but it's higher than what they would normally like to see. They do want to go ahead with the surgery, though, because everything else appears normal and in line with a healthy dog.

So, no food/water after midnight tonight, which shouldn't be an issue, they pick her up at 8:45 tomorrow am, and then she stays the night at the hospital and back home on Friday.

Thanks for all the good wishes--and Annika, I'm glad to know your dogs did well after the surgery. Very good to know!

We have two German Shedders...er I mean Shepherds as well, and they are such treasures. I'll tell them about Rose and have them send some good doggy energy her way.
Knowing risks with joint issues for GSD's, I've been giving mine Glyco-Flex for years. It keeps them limber and comfortable, and something like that might even help Rose with potential for future strains!!

Ha, that's about right, German Shedders. She (and our other 3 dogs) just blew their coats a few weeks ago and I'm STILL cleaning!

I'll get some of the Gynoflex. She does take a vitamin supplement, as do the other dogs and they also take fish oil capsules. Thanks for the tip!

Tell Rose good luck tomorrow! My cairn had both his knees done last year. Blew his right ACL 3 days after the surgery on the left! That was a rough summer/fall on us but he's doing well now. He still has some issues with his left knee but I think it was because it never had a chance to heal properly since it had to take the load after his right one went bad. Give Rose lots of pettings tonight!

Thanks for the good thoughts--keep em through Monday, her surgery has been rescheduled. The doc had an emergency out of town. So, we'll have the weekend to get ready and make the house a bit more easily travelled for her.
