Hey girls -
Is the Dyson really worth it? A couple of people I know have it, love it and feel it's worth every penny; but some reviews I've read indicate it's not all it's cracked up to be, nor worth the money. What do YOU think?

I have purchased several Dysons from these folks:

(got one for each of my kids)
Buying refurbished saves a bundle - and we've never had a problem with them. I've purchased them from $200 to $350 - a substantial savings. Do your research, and try to get one of the newer models, they are much easier to use.
We had a problem with fleas when we moved into our house. After getting the Dyson, and doing a thorough vacuuming all over, we haven't had a problem since.
You will be AMAZED at the amount of dirt you will pick up!

Best Vacuum I have ever had. I vacuum everyday(a little OCD I guess) I have had mine for 4 years and it is still going strong.
You can totally take it apart and clean the whole thing out and I was even able to put it back together with no problem. usually I take things apart and my DH has to put them back together.
Insane and Blissfully Happy

I don't know about Dysons BUT we have an Electrolux and we LOVE it! Michael actually had it before we got married (one of the things that got me too :)). He purchased it in 1995 and the only thing that we have had to do as far as maintenance goes is replace a hose which cost us $8.00. We use it every day also :)

We actually just bought one last month. We were amazed with the amount of super fine dirt it picked up after having used our already fairly expensive vac. Another benefit was the carpet felt softer after using the Dyson! I would recommend it. (i also have wrist issues and this moves so nicely without much effort)

My mom has a dyson and loves it. I love it too, she has 3 dogs and their hair gets everywhere, but the dyson gets it. Watch out though when buying carpet if you own one, they will void any warranty on the carpet because of how much power they pack.

I have an older model Dyson & it is sitting in the garage in the yard sale pile. Although I cannot in good conscience sell it. It doesn't "suck" anymore, although for me, it kinda "sucked" all along. Constantly got clogged, very heavy, had to stop 5 times per sessions, take apart, unclog, & finally it quit "sucking" altogether (in the cleaning sense, not in the general sense)
I paid $450 for it.
I am now an Oreck girl. They are made in the USA, their warranties are great & most of their deals offer the hand held as a bonus.
Let's face it, having all of those tools on board makes for a bulky vac.
It is easier to just have the hand held to do the fine cleaning.
It is a very light vac, I have had for 4 yrs, & it still "sucks" great (in the cleaning sense)
Plus...again...Made in the USA!!! |

Right now, we have a canister shop vac. At first I thought it was a brilliant choice. My husband promised he wouldn't take it with him to work, and we just figured it'd be great for the many rooms we have. Unfortunately, he never kept that promise. He took my new shop vac to his cousin's house to vacuum out her furnace in her basement. Then he sneaked it out a few times for side jobs. He has taken it out to vaccuum wood shavings in the garage, out on the roof when he was replacing tiles, down in the basement when it flooded... you get the idea. It's more his toy than my functional housecleaning tool. I can't stand it anymore. It's bulky, cumbersome, loud and stinky. Even though he cleans it and keeps up with the filter, it smells horrifying. I HATE IT. <sigh> It felt so good to get that out. LOL! So now I'm on the hunt. I want a really, really good vaccuum, and am willing to invest. We have two floors we use, and a third that is primarily used for storage and my hubby's amazing and ever-expanding train set (kids and adults alike simply can't resist when they visit!). I need something that will easily transport from floor to floor, something with an attachment to suck up spiders and the occasional stinkbug, something I can use on my stairs, and something strong enough to suck up the pet hair. We're going to be getting new carpeting and/or flooring eventually, so I want to be sure to get something that will be well worth the money and last long-term. Between the dog shedding, the hubby's workboots, the innumerable kids trapsing through the house AND living on a main road, I need to be sure I buy something that will really clean, though. It's a never-ending cycle around here and I can't take dealing with the shop vac anymore. Whenever we use it, the whole house smells musty afterwards. It was a stupid purchase "for the house," I suppose. He meant well, and gave me a good sales pitch, but two years later and I'm just done. DONE.
So now you have some idea as to how much I really need and appreciate your input girls! :) THANK YOU!!

Another plus to the Oreck is that there is no adjustment to go between hard floors & carpet.. It automatically works on both.
We have brick floors in our main living room, & laminate in the others, with large area rugs. I can easily go from one surface to the other with no adjustments.
Oh, & I should mention, we have 4 dogs (2 Aussies, a husky type mix, & one short hair), & hubs is in & out after wood chopping & the like.
So dirt is no stranger here.
That Oreck COULD get even more of a workout, if I only channeled Martha Stewart more regularly.. Sigh.. |

Hee hee hee... I know what you mean, Lisa... Part of my 2-year procrastination was because my HUSBAND does all the vacuuming because this shop vac was his brilliant idea.... LOL!! I'll check out the Orecks - I promise! :) Thank you!!!

I don't have an Oreck, we just bought a new Kirby, but I loved your post, Nini. I would procrastinate too, if my DH did ALL the vacuuming. I vacuum everyday too, there's no OCD to it, its just needed! I can so sympathise with hating a stinky vacuum. My last one was used by one of my little ones, after an accident!! She was trying to "help mommy..." Lol. Never got the urine smell out, thus the new kirby.
If you get one, let us know how you like it. I hate caring the kirby upstairs, and I'm pretty sure my DH will not buy me a second Kirby. Maybe ill order an Oreck, the referbished ones, that's a great idea...
