If you're lucky enough to have a pool, you're also probably unlucky enough to have this problem, or will someday.
We had this black stain growing along the bottom wall of our pool, and it spread almost halfway around it while turning the water green!
The guy at the pool store tried to sell us $80 in chemicals to fix it! here is what I did instead (and it worked!):
This might have worked, but 1.it's getting too hot to have my pool unusable b/c of chemicals and sludge, and 2, I have my own well and lots of available water. I can drain and refill the entire pool in less than 24 hours for about 10 bucks in electricity on a weekend, so I opted to hit it fast and hard, kamikaze style!
We drained the pool a bit at a time, and scrubbed the top layer of the stains with a metal bristle brush, like the kind you use for bbq grills. This took off the "protective layer" of the algae that makes it so hard to knock out.
When you have an in ground pool it's possible for the basin to crack in the heat if it's hot out, so we kept the walls sprayed down with water from the hose while we worked.
When we scrubbed off most of the stain, we were left with a light brown shadow. We then took chlorine pucks, and used them like chalk all over the stain to kill the algae.
Then, we refilled the pool.
If your water isn't too nasty, and you dont want to drain the pool, you can strap on the snorkle and diving mask to do the same thing under water, and that will also kick it. You'll just want to run a shock treatment and algicide to clean up your water.
There you have it, it may not be a common problem, but it's still a big problem to those that have it! As for my cost? I spent 4$ on grill brushes, and a new bottle of stabilizer to kick off my water on a good foot.
