What in the world could I use as a deterrent? We gave up an called in the troops/exterminator, but now they are starting to come in around the kitchen window molding. I prefer not to have them spray...
Thanks!!!

Sherri-
I have had the same problem here. I make a paste of vinegar and ground cloves and put it at the beginning of the trail ( as best I can find it!) and squueze it through the corner of a nipped ziplock bag. The ants don't seem to like it at all. I think I read in one of the threads that you can put vinegar outside where you see them coming in and they will stop. But, it will kill any plants it touches!
Good luck!!

You may be opposed to using traps/bait, but I have found the only thing that works is to get rid of the nest. We don't like using pesticide sprays, but the traps/bait are used so the ants will take the poison back to the nest and the queen will eat it. We usually have ants about once a year and after the traps go out I never see them again (until next year!).

Try Terro, it's corn syrup and borax, non-toxic to you and pets, but does a number on ants.
We had a some sweet ants in the cupboard (they found the honey) I set out a bottle cap of terro and it was like hogs at the trough, they take it back to the nest too.
It took them about 3 hours to find it then they emptied the cap so fast I could believe it. after the second filling that was it.
just my 2 cents

Where do you find Terro? I have had ants for two months - they seem to pour in the house when it rains, but I think they are after the sugar/honey although they could be carpenter ants, I don't know, I can't seem to find where they come in. I put out two different kinds of bait (one was Raid, I can't remember the other one) and when that didn't work I finally called the exterminator (one who advertises natural methods of pest removal) and he used different kinds of baits - that was 10 days ago, he is coming back tomorrow to try something different, I am getting desperate.

We had 5 inches of rain yesterday and it is raining again today, more forecasted for tomorrow.... I think the ants are looking for high ground but I would prefer it not be in my house!!!!!!

My granny swore by Terro. You can probably find it at a hardware store.

My husband was home today when the exterminator came. You have to know my husband, his favorite refrain in regards to herbicides/insecticides/etc. is "It's safe!!!!" Better living through chemistry, and all that. He is a certified hazardous material manager in addition to having served as an environmental engineer, so he should know.... although he admits his favorite uncle died of cancer probably helped along by the agricultural chemicals he used in the orchard. He doesn't spray the 2-4D near the garden and I let him get the bad dandelions in the lawn, and so we co-exist.....

Anyway, he said the exterminator "sprayed POISON" and he doesn't know what it was. So far I haven't seen an ant - and it's still raining out.

My pest control guys knows that I don't like the chemicals so he uses a special concoction just for me. He says its part lysterine, part baby shampoo, water and a pinch of tobacco and he lets it sit in a bucket for a week to come to full power and he sprays it outside. I've never had a bug problem in 3 years. We did compromise and he dosen't spray my vegi garden. I was worried about the tobbacco...I handle the bugs there myself but so far it works. It's detered or killed spiders, carpenter ants, scorpions (small ones), and sugar ants. I've never seen a roach or palmetto bug in here but I've had a problem with scorpions getting in the house before he came and sprayed.

I found Terro at a Walgreens. We are being invaded! They are coming in somewhere near the front door, so I put the Terro in a milk jug lid in a closet near there (I don't want my dog messing with it). I also have them coming in through the woodwork around the kitchen window over the sink (and I just cleaned!)I wasn't wild about the Terro idea there so I got a tip I'm trying....baby powder. Someone told me they won't cross it. So far, so good!

You're exactly right. For some reason ants will not cross a line of baby powder. I clean peoples houses and I tell them to do this and they are amazed at the results. It smells good to us...but the ants must not like it! It works!
