Sometimes I feel like the only CA farmgirl on here. Are there any others? I am so envious of all of you farmgirls from other states that actually live on a farm. I am from central CA along the coast. I have an urban farm in my front yard in place of the lawn. I would love to meet more like me.

Rebekah, I am in Cali. Not terribly far from you. I have a couple of friends who's mother lives in Santa Cruz. We have a farm in Thornton, about 20 minutes from here. We moved off the family farm for some "wing stretching" just a year ago. I have been looking for Cali farmgirls too. I know there are mjf groups in Sacramento, but I haven't lived in Sac in 7 years, and its a bit far. I'm less than two hours from you. Hope you find lots of Cali farmgirls, and some even closer &hearts

Hi Rebekah, I live in Templeton, which is a small town in the San Luis Obispo county area. Like you, my farm is in my backyard. I have chickens, rabbits, bee hives, and to many dogs. Love them all. I have a couple of horses too but they are not in the backyard.
It's good to meet you! |

Hi Rebekah,
OOOH NO! You mustn't think that there aren't any Farmgirls here in our sunny California because that just isn't so at all!
I am in Northern California and have been a farmgirl here since January of this year and loving it.
I love Santa Cruz and all of the California beaches. I am an avid kntter and crocheter and love sunny days, strawberries, chocolate, teas, and reading mysteries and watching movies. I do enjoy a little gardening too and taking strolls along the beach and baking. I am active in charity knitting and crocheting.
Nice to meet you! You are NOT the only Farmgirl here at all..... not by a long shot!

Hi Annette,
I'm also a Northern Calif. farmgirl and have been since I was first inspired by Mary Jane's first Magazine. We are off the grid , trying to get to the point we can afford to farm full time in Gualala, Calif. Southern Mendo. coast. My daughter is in Santa Cruz.
Welcome !

Well gosh! There are lots of us! I am also in San Luis Obispo County. I live on a farm/ranch in Nipomo. I also have a Farmgirls chapter called "Back to the Land-Nipomo Farmgirls" We don't meet as often as I'd like, but most of the members also belong to my tea society, so I do see them! I haven't been gardening as much as I'd like lately, but I am a crafting fanatic. I knit, sew, embroider, and hope to pick up crochet soon. I also love to cook. Nice to meet you all!!!

It is so nice to meet all of you!
Annette: Where is Rio Vista?
Teresita: Nice to meet you. What charity do you donate your knitting to?
Katie: How wonderful you live off of the grid. I would love to do that. I am just a city girl right now with a garden for a front yard, but would some day like to be more self-sufficient and off of the grid. Does your daughter go to UCSC? I love your blog. Your homestead is beyond amazing.
Shari: Nice to meet you! I love the San Luis Obispo area. I love to crochet. I think it is way easier than knitting. Maybe its is just because I grew up doing it, but it seems easier than knitting to me.
Darcy: My step-sister lives in Paso Robles and I drive through there often to get down to my mom's house in the town of Mojave. Paso Robles sure has grown over the last 20 years that I have been driving through there. Highway 46 leading out of town has added a lot of wineries and businesses. I want to take my daughter to the water park off of hwy 46 the next time we pass through there. My daughter is twelve and loves those kind of places.

Rio Vista is off highway 12. It's by fairfield and vacaville. I'm about 15 minutes from antioch, lodi, and an hour SW of Sac. Very small town, but a wonderful place. I love the pics you posted in the kitchen window view thread. Your little yards are so cute. Looks like you do very well with what you have! Great job!

Okay, I know where that is. Three of my cousins grew up in Antioch. They all moved away, but my one cousin who now lives in Brentwood. You ARE pretty close to me. Thanks for the compliment about my yard. I expanded this year and added another small garden box for squash and my luffa gourds. I sure wish I had my own farm. I do love living by the beach though, so it is a trade off.

I just found this topic and I live in CA. Tina Kay, I am about 75 miles from you. I live in Inyokern, just outside of Ridgecrest off of hwy 395. We're practically neighbors. As Tina Kay can tell you, we live in the high desert and it's hot in summer, cold in winter and the wind blows like crazy. I used to live in Vista back in the late 60's and early 70's and I've lived in the Central Valley. I've lived all over the US and was born in the UK but the US is home. |

Good morning everyone. Hope everyone has a good day. The wind died down last night and if we're lucky it won't come back this afternoon. Hello to all of you here in CA. What does everyone do? Garden, knit, crochet, quilt. I do all but my pashion outdoors is gardening. Yes, things grow in the desert. I also have chickens and two aviaries with birds in them and a lovely view of the mountains. From my front porch where I spend a lot of time, I have a gorgeous view. |

Betty: Thanks for the note you posted on here. Your home sounds amazing! My mom lives not far from you. She lives in the town of Mojave. I love that area. The wind does get crazy down there this time of year. My mom has been caught in a sand storm twice. Once, she had to have her whole car repainted. The other time, her windshield had to be replaced because it was sandblasted by wind and desert sand. It has been really windy in my area in central CA also. My allergies are killing me from all of the dust in the air.
I like to crochet, knit on a knitting loom, sew, paint, read and garden. I am thinking of getting chickens, but my kitchen garden is so much work right now that I am not sure if I should take on chickens.
Thanks again for stopping in and introducing yourself.

Annette: Hugs back to you! Are you getting geared up for the end of the school year? What do your kids do during the summer?
Michelle & Tina: Hello! Thanks for stopping in. What are your hobbies and interests? If you have gardens, what do you have growing?

Oh bummer...for a moment when I stumbled across the post title I got excited, but once again y'all are in Central or Northern Cali...almost anywhere but the Southbay area of Los Angeles where I live! (I so want to move to Central Coast.)

Cat: I love your name! Maybe someone will post on here from your area. Subscribe and read as people post. I hope you find someone from SoCal. I know how you feel though; I felt like I was the only Farmgirl from CA. (((Hugs from Central CA)))

Kirsty, you'll have to let us all know if you move back.;)
We should try to find a centrally located place to meet, even if only rarely. This site is so wonderful, but how uplifting to actually get together, and play?!&hearts

Rebekah, I'm so ready for the school year to be over. Just a few days without driving all over is going to be wonderful. My 5 year old Kaylee, does have a 3 week kinder-camp in June, but other than that we are plan free SO FAR for the summer. Summers past, we have been all over, going 500 directions at once. For once, I would like to TRY to avoid this. Last summer I was very ill.(long yuckie story) I have little to no recollection of it. I am going to use this summer to swim, boat, bbq, and cuddle with my kids. Health and stability regained, my goal is to enjoy the beegeebies out'a my bbs!
What are your plans? Did you say your DD was 12? I'm trying to remember. Well, all of you, have a great day.

I agree with Annette... It would be so fun to have a CA Farmgirl gathering. Maybe a CA Farmgirl chapter? Then, we could have a henhouse. I am going to look into that. I will post back here.

Annette: A summer of nothing sounds fabulous! I feel so drained from homework and running around by the end of the school year and I just have one. Yes, my daughter is twelve. I work 7-3:30 every day, so I have to put my daughter in activities all summer to keep her busy. She will be taking acting classes, dance lessons, softball and she will be a camp counselor for kindergarteners for a week at a local church. It will be a busy summer of running her around, but no homework!!!

Hi everyone. My daughter is looking for school to be out also. She teaches 5th grade and has a two year old and a 12 year old, both boys. I look forward to school being out so I can visit them. They live in Visalia in the Central Valley and I'm 3 hrs. away in the desert. I will be able to see them more often once school is out. I also remember how it was when mine were out for vacation. I raised 7 so the school year was hectic. We not only have the usual high winds, we have a fire in the mountains and all the smoke is covering us. I've had to close the house it's so bad. We're in no danger at this time and doubtful we will be but the smoke is the problem. |
