Our local news reported that school age children can no longer call Easter Eggs "Easter Eggs" in Southern California. They are now to be referred to as "Spring Spheres". My jaw dropped! Eggs are not spheres for one thing and I find this totally ridiculous.

I saw this story the other day. I rolled my eyes, shook my head, went outside and yelled "EASTER EGGS! EASTER EGGS! EASTER EGGS!!!"

Seriously. :)

Why don't they just call them Spring Eggs if they're trying to get rid of the religious aspect? Since when did the word "egg" offend anyone ;)

To be frank, there are only a few words that are offensive to me (of a racist nature) that I can't type here. I can't imagine that we have become a society of prima donnas.

I'm about fed up with the whole thing.

Why do people who want to have religion in their lives have to give it up for those who don't?

I'm offended by the way my family is forced to go with out.

If you don't like it, don't celebrate it!

Not to be more snide, but aside from a marketing invention, doesn't the "Easter Bunny" sortof solve this issue? He's not a religious icon, referenced in the bible or denotes any "religious" affiliation. He brings candy, jelly beans and "hides" the eggs. Why couldn't they be CALLED Easter eggs, then?

I'm sure all children of every ethnic and religious background can dig on a bunny that brings candy...just sayin'.

On a related note, I once went to the Easter Seals Society for a job-finding program, and they wouldn't allow a pastor's wife to wear her cross earrings. I asked the man who worked there (he said he was a humanist) if he'd ever had a direct experience of God. He said, "If I ever had a direct experience of God, I'd be so scared that I'd run away." I wonder if he even realized that he'd just admitted he believed in God. Crazy.

It's probably more about marketing them what "people" want them to be called, while I believe in God fully, and even Christ and his resurrection. He is my savior. "easter eggs" have nothing to do with Christ and his resurrection, the eggs have to do with fertility gods that were once worshiped at this time of year, same with the rabbits. So while I, and I'm sure most Jewish and many other religions probably have nothing to do with "easter eggs" them being called something different is pretty silly, cause people who don't celebrate easter, still know they are easter eggs, and not spring spheres! lol And will still not probably participate in spring spheres. So there is no real reason to change their names, except companies who do not have the same religious beliefs probably do not understand the peoples stand who do have religious beliefs "against" easter eggs, and so a rose by any other name, is still a rose, and so most people who don't use easter eggs cause of their religious beliefs, will not being buying or making spring spheres either! lol So that's just insanity.

But, like I said it probably is more commercialism, then being politically correct, so don't blame people who have different religious beliefs, blame the companies marketing crews. Cause I don't know any one my religion going around asking for their names to be changed. lol haha

OK, so as ever the semantic nutcase, I HAD to look up the origin of the word "Easter" and this is what I found:
Eostre - a pagan Anglo-Saxon Goddess
This mythical figure is said to have been the goddess of the sunrise and the spring. She is the Teutonic goddess of the dawn. The direction of the sunrise, East, is named for her. In Norse mythology, the name is spelled Eostare. Another considered the Norse/Saxon goddess of spring is Ostara. Eastre is believed to be an ancient word for spring. In other words, they changed the word for Spring (Easter) to Spring! Wow. Kinda dumb, don't you think??

And oh yes, this is where we get the word,"Estrogen" from too. So I dare anyone to go point out to somebody in that school district that the word Easter is from the root words for East and sunrise and is the root for Estrogen (thereby offended all of the female ilk) and that the eggs (ovals, not spheres) are a sign of fertility. I wonder how they'll fit THAT into their politically correct little black book? :-)

You know what if I lived in southern California my kids would call easter eggs easter eggs! No one but no one is ever allowed to tell me what I can teach my children or what I call items...if they say we can't I would see them in court that's for sure...This PC stuff has gone on long enough & I will be damned (sorry can't think of another word to express this) if someone can tell me what I do is PC or not or get on my case about it.....I believe in being respectful but this is just plain stupid in my eyes....I am part Indian but do I throw a fet if someone calls me a white woman?...no because in all honesty it doesn''t matter to me if they know or not....nor do I broadcast it.....Michele'

Mary Beth- you crack me up! I think the root of the word Easter is very interesting!

I am glad that "Spring Spheres" doesn't seem to be catching on anywhere else! How silly. But I did get a good laugh this morning!

Married to an Iranian who's family lives in southern CA, I can know that there is a huge population of Iranians, Indians (from India) and Chinese there. Since these Americans are not Christian, it is not surprising that their children don't celebrate Easter. As I mentioned in my "holiday" post about the Persian New Year, Nowrooz, Iranians have been decorating "Spring Eggs" for over 3,000 years, way before Christianity started.

So, let me ask you this. How would you feel if the government says you can't practice your religion anymore either? The Bible says that time is coming soon! All these things to do with the government against religion are a fulfillment of Bible prophecy.
Will you be able to take your stand on God's side when the majority are against you?
I know my family are ready no matter what they do to us!

I'm hoping my family will be ready for that day Marsha. That's what we study and prepare for. Of course I will never say I am "standing" and can't "fall", as Peter made that mistake, and the Bible says woe to the one saying he is standing for he will be the next to fall. But, I pray and hope that when the day comes my family will be close enough to God's love to stand strong before what ever comes our way and stand on God's side. Just as many had to do not that long ago in Germany during WWII, and are now going through all over the world in such places as Georgia (not the state here in the USA, the country), Russia and many other countries where the government interferes with people's faith, using laws, threats, and prison.

i'm curious.....is the White House still having their traditional Easter Egg hunt this year? frankly, i'm so sick of this stuff.....years ago america was supposed to be a "Melting Pot"....now we're supposed to be a "Salad Bowl"......do any of these idiots know what they are doing? if they want people to be accepting of one anothers beliefs, then why don't they just let everyone celebrate and share their beliefs with others. i'm not saying that you have to force someone else to use your belief but what's the harm in exposing others to something different?

I was just remembering growing up outside of D.C. in Silver Springs, MD where our elementary school was a conglomerate of kids from all over the world. Many ambassadors and other dignitaries from other countries lived in our community, as well as military and so my classes were very diverse. I remember in the 4th grade that we played with Dreidels and learned to sing the song and learned to dance the Horah for Jewish holidays. We did Christian plays and sang Christmas songs for Christmas and hunted eggs for Easter, and we learned about other faiths as well. There was a LARGE Jewish community and so it was just assumed that we would honor them. No lawsuits. No offended people. It just was the way it was.

And I'm glad you all got a chuckle from my "research". I think what is a hoot is that the school system has no clue that Easter is actually a pagan ritual and not based on Christianity at all. Actually, it is thought that the Jews began celebrating their "Feast of Weeks" and "Passover" at the same time as the Pagan Easter when they were in captivity in Babylon. The Babylonians were pagans who celebrated the Spring Equinox as Easter. Later on, with the coming of Christ and his death and ressurection at Passover, the tradition continued for the Christian Church. I bet if you asked any of the officials in that school district if they knew that Easter is actually a pagan holiday, they wouldn't know what to say.

Today we commenmorate the death of Jesus and the Lord's evening meal that he commanded his followers to keep doing in remembrance of him. That is where my mind is now and reflecting on what he went through for our sake. It starts after sundown in accord with the Jewish calendar.
I'll talk about this more on my blog since this is not the place to go further.

Mary Beth nearly every Christian holiday is placed purposely on a Pagan Sabbat-this was done by the church in medieval times to convert the masses. Christmas is placed on the Winter Solstice or as close as it can get seeing as solstices and equinoxes are never on the same day in any given year. The Winter solstice,or Yule,as I know it,celebrates the rebirth of the Pagan God and heralds the return of warmer weather, all things becoming green again, days becoming longer, life renewed. You can see why the early church chose this time to be the birthday of Christ because of the similarities. Weather permitting, the traditional start to this holiday is to watch the sunrise.
Candalmas was originally "Imbolc" better know as the "Feast of the Waxing Light" Celebrating the Celtic Goddess Brigid, who the Catholic Church turned into "St Brigid",seeing as they couldn't stop the population from worshipping Her,even keeping Her sacred healing wells.
I think it's important that as a people of the planet,we are able to share our spiritual traditions with one another with open-ness and respect for the other, free of feeling the need to be "right". I have participated in Jewish celebrations and so forth feeling honored to be asked to take part in it,even tho I am not Jewish. It's important to share spiritual traditions to prevent misunderstandings or misguided perceptions.
I'm really pleased at how this thread is going-I never guessed it would become as detailed as it is now!
