Ok Girls I need your help, as I am sure that there are many of you out there with little girls and you have lots of knowledge. So the grand daughters want American Girl dolls for christmas , but grandma can't afford those. So does anyone know of any dolls that compare with the AG quailty ,but are lower price? If you do , have you seen the ones that you refer to and how do they compare? The girls are 8 and 6 , and as much as I would love to I can not afford the AG dolls. I have been told that there are some dolls out there that campare pretty well from Walmart and the price is much better at about $30.00 a doll . But has anyone seen them or know about them? Do they really compare or do you know of something better and great quality? I love the girls and I admit when my daughter was young I paid the bucks and got her an american girl doll and a lot of the trimmings, but I was working 2 jobs back then. Now I have 2 little grand daughters and I can not get for one and not the other and money is a factor since I am not able to work. I figure that I can crochet and knit a lot of clothes for them but I won't be able to make much of the accesories , so I need ideas..... anyone have good sites for making the clothes and different items? I know that you are all probably a lot more web savy then I am and I so appreciate any help you can give me. Like I said I have very limited income since just the DH works , so I need to try and make this happen for my girls as inexpensively as possible. Thanks so much for your help and ideas.

Yes I do in fact! They do not have as wide a variety of looks to their dolls, but they are exactly the same as AG dolls!

Hmmm I just went to the website and maybe they are discontinueing selling them because they don't have as many as they did before, only three now. (they used to have at least one african american one before). Any way, here they are.

If you go to the actual store often you can look through their clearance and get dresses for like 3 and 4 dollars, and their clothes are much higher quality then AG's clothes. (I used to live in NYC and went to the AG store often, their stuff was not that high of quality especially versus the price they asked!).

I made look alike dolls for my girls who are now 18 and 21, they still have the dolls. In Michaels craft store is a cloth body, vinyl arms and legs 18 inch doll that comes in blonde, brunette, redhead and darker skinned. The eyes open and close too. I bought these and made outfits for them as close to the outfits out of the American Girl catalog as I could . the dolls run about $20 I think and the brand name is Springfield, check it out

Springfield collection dolls run around $20 and fit the American girl clothes. Many sites sell them. http://www.homesew.com/D41.html is one but there are others such as http://www.sunshinecrafts.com/dept_view.php?DPath=DOLLS~DLSPRNG~DLSPRNG1&Page=1

I have purchased 4 of them and made clothes for them for my grand daughters. They love them.

I know that I've seen other dolls that resemble AG dolls at Target, though I don't know their names--I personally don't see that they look any different. It's simply that there isn't the "marketing" surrounding them...

I would like to say that 2 Christmases ago, we all bought "official" AG doll clothing, accesssories, pets, stuff, etc..to go with the AG doll my then, 6 year old niece got for her birthday. We bought more for Christmas (which was 3 weeks after her birthday). She hasn't played with it since...So, go the less expensive route and it won't sting nearly so much when the dolls become ovesized Barbies with their hair strung out all over the place

Do they like to read a certain series of the books? Perhaps that would work?

Gosh thanks so much for all the input girls! I am checking them all out. I am really thinking of the BF dolls from walmart. I am in the process of hunting down some patterns on line for crochet. I would give just about anything if I had a working sewing machine , then I could really work on some cute outfits for them. Thanks again so much for all the information.
