Hello to all,
I am so glad that I have found this site. I have been raised in the city all my life but have always been a farmgirl at heart. My husband and our 4 children will be making to the move to Asheville, North carolina next summer to finally get a start on our small scale farm. So far the closest I have been to my dream is owning two double lots in town where I had 25 chickens and a dog.
My husband and I have a 7 year old, a 5 year old, a 3 year old and a 4 month old. We look forward to teaching them the skills to gorw their own healthy food and REALLY do things for themselfs, rather then just buying everything premade.
I hope to find out more about having a farm and some of the details people don't think about. If anyone else on this forum is from the Asheville area I would love to pick their brain about the area.

Thank you and I look forwards to loads of learning,
Antoinette

Welcome, Antoinette. Wow, four kids. I have a hard time with just 2, I couldn't imagine four! I live in a small city in KY, but I dream of the day when I can move to the farm. You will lear a lot of things here, and the ladies are great.

You know, 4 really sounds like a lot, even when I say it to myself. But it's not really all that much harder then 2. My husband and I started young so we have the advantage of energy and knowing that we will still be young when they move out..even though that is not going to be for a very long time.

I dream of living on a farm a bit to much I think...I have a hard time thinking about anything else. I am always day dreaming about how I want my land layed out and what kind of animals and fruits and vegaatables I will have. I dream about having organic, fresh, healthy foor for my family without having to pay the health food prices.

Welcome Antoinette! You will not have any trouble at all keeping your dreams alive by visiting here. There are some brilliant, knowledgeable and talented folks here. I shared your dream for fifteen years...sometimes it might even have been called an obsession! I must have read "The Havemore Plan" twenty times and collected every single back issue of The Mother Earth News Magazine!! But finally we were able to afford the place we have now and it was well worth the wait. Never lose your dreams.
Nice to have you here.
Di

Welcome Antoinette!
Ashville is a wonderful and lovely area with tons of farmettes, rolling country side and neat shops, flea markets, farmers markets and more. I lived there for a short time but my grandparents lived there for several years and my brother went to a private boarding academy there before that so my family have spent a lot of time there and I think you will love it!! I absolutly love that area! Have you bought a place yet? I am thrilled for you and I hope you love the area and are able to make your farming dreams come true! I have four children and want to get them out in the country too so they can grow up be close to nature learning to grow and make food and care for the animals. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do it yet and by the time I do my oldest will be 14 or 15 years old. But all my kids are on board and my oldest LOVES working in the yard and growing things so if I can help him keep interested and keep the other three on board we should be fine! I am so happy for you that you are able to do this while they are still young! I think a farm is the best place for a kid to grow up....just my feelings anyway
Hope all goes wonderfully and will be excited to hear you progress when it all happens!!
See you 'round!

I for some reason have always been attracted to North Carolina and Virginia. I have a friend who grew up in Tennessee and I asked her about North Carolina. She told me I would love Asheville and so I did some research and asked around a bit and it sounds like it is just up our alley. We are very much into the farmers market, health food, artistic, nature loving kinda thing and that sounds like Asheville in a nutshell. We will be moving over there, as long as we like what we see on our trip in August, next summer after the kids finish up the school year. We have a lot up in Oregon we are going to sell in order to pay for our land out east.

Hi Antoinette, welcome to the forum! Hubby is from N.C. He wants to winter there after retirement so we are looking for property in the mountains. It would be nice to keep in touch with someone with the same interests.I'm an avid gardener and all-around crafter. We have a 6 year old. The 16 and 18 year old will be in college when we move. Hope we can get together someday. This will be a big move for me as I'm a 5 generation Alaskan. Can't wait to look for property though. We have 2 cats, one dog.1 horse and I really miss having chickens. Take care, from an Alaskan girl
