It looks like Wave 2 of the big blizzard is coming in toight and tomorrow for my area. My heater hasn't stopped running for the last 2 hours and I am getting bundled up to go put Tala's blanket back on her.

What temperatures do you all start blanketing your outdoor animals like horses if they are pasture based aka no real shelter. I always cringe when it starts getting cold, even thought I know that the cold doesn't affect her the same way it does us humans... I feel so bad! I have horse guilt! LOL

I put a blanket on my horse as soon as we start hitting the teens during the day. My horse is a hard keeper so keeping her warm keeps weight on. I also have been locking my goats in their sdtalls at night. With 3 does due with in a month I don't want to take chances of getting them cold.
We are going to be in the teens and single digits at night with negative wind hills all week.YUCK!!
Stay warm and dry!

God Bless

Angie- do you put corn oil on your horse's feed during the winter? We do at my barn and it seems to really help!

Ooh, Alee, take care in that blizzard, hon. I've been worried about our roof ever since you mentioned it, but think we'll be okay.

Angie- it is a source of almost instant "soft" energy for the animals. It doesn't give them a sugar rush like grain can but provides calories for the body to keep itself warm.

Nicole- I am sorry I worried you!

Alee,
Don't be sorry, it was so sweet of you to reply to my post. You were right - roofs have been damaged, but it's been mostly flat roofs as opposed to homes that have been caving in. A horse barn with horses collapsed - don't know how many horses were injured. There was a bowling alley and also a grocery store here that the roof collapsed, but thankfully, no one was hurt. So far, no snow in our forecast for awhile. Stay warm!
