I bought a book titled: Build Your Own Earth Oven by Kiko Denzer. The cover says: A low-cost, wood-fired Mud Oven: Simple Sourdough Bread; Perfect Loaves. I also got a free article off Sunset Magazines web site: www.sunset.com with step by step instructions to building and using your own backyard adobe oven. I am really excited to give this a try. Some of the photos in the book show really elaborate ovens but mine will be basic. I am thinking about making this one of our Chapters projects this spring/summer. If we all get together to build one, the second one will be much easier. I love homemade bread, almost more than anything, even sweets, so it might not be a really good idea (lol), but I also love the idea of making bread outside. Do any other farmgirls have one or are you thinking of making one? I would love to hear from you on your experiences using this type of oven. If you are thinking of making one be sure to check out the Sunset web site or just Google Adobe or Earth ovens for a wealth of free plans.

I just got that book too! I was tramping around the woods here trying to find a local source of free clay. Here in Central NJ, there were many famous potteries during the 1700 & 1800's that used local source clay. Unfortunately, most of them are now covered with malls or housing developments. But with all the snow we've had here, looking for clay is at a standstill until we get some major melting action around here. I love the fact that these ovens can be fired up with such a small quantity of wood. Anyone see Jamie Oliver at home series? His big brick dome oven in the yard make me drool! Peas, Barb |

The Dervais family in Pasadena CA have an outdoor adobe oven. Check out their unique urban homestead at Path to Freedom Urban Homestead.com or something to that effect. Just google them and you'll find them. Amazing folks.
