My daughter came down with a really nasty headcold. No fever, really congested and now this morning her nose is running like a faucet. She keeps saying "no,no" and pointing to her nose. (She is 18 months old). Last night I put a water vaporizer in her room and put a few drops of peppermint essential oil in the water. It seemed to help. What can I do for her today that is natural? I don't want to keep giving her Tylenol. There has to be something else to do naturally to help her little immune system fight this off and keep it away. My husband and I are healthy and I haven't been sick all year, but I don't go into the nursery at church on Sunday mornings. Does anyone have any natural tips for relief for a little kid besides just giving her tylenol? Thanks in advance!

If there is no fever, you really shouldn't be giving her tylenol--that's a pain/fever medication. Our daughter will be 2 at the end of February, and she gets congested quite often. We use a lot of saline and the nasal aspirator. Also standing with her in the bathroom with a hot shower running is good, too. All of these are temporary solutions, and barring any high fever, I wouldn't give her tylenol. Also, putting rolled towels or elevating her mattress on the end her head faces is also good.

Thanks Jonni! I will give the aspirator and saline a go! I did give her tylenol once this morning when she first woke up to help relieve the pain of congestion (which is when her nose started running like Niagara Falls) but I don't want to give her anymore if she doesn't get a fever. I totally agree, hopefully the aspirator will do the trick for her!

We used saline spray every day after bath. You can get Johnson and Johnson bath that is euclipus and menthol. It will help break up some of the junk. I even like to use it. Toys R Us has their brand so it is about 3-4 dollars. I used Vick Vapo Rub it works wonders, I am sure that they have one for under 2.

Hope this helps and baby feels better soon!

Have her eat crystalized ginger and drink ginger tea. Also plenty of water, the act of swallowing the water helps the nasal drip go down the stomach and not the back of the throat.

2 to 3 Tbls fresh ginger, chopped and boiled in 2 cups of water, strained into a cup, sweetened with a smidge of honey or agave nectar(NO SUGAR). I'd let her drink as much as she wants. Strong mint tea is good for colds as well.

sitting in a steamy bathroom might help...or playing in the tub with warm water after getting the bathroom steamy.

My GD is 2 and her Pediatrician told my daughter to put vicks vaporub on her sloes of her feet. I also got an email saying the same thing for adults for coughing. I had a horrible cold and tried it and it worked.
