So about two days ago I was in my kitchen cleaning and my daughter came in and she got down on the floor. Having one duplo block in each hand and then crashed them into each other then said, "Do you have good car insurance?" One car asked the other.
This made me stop in my tracks. Most of the time she only watches sproat and one of the three things on for their commercials is about car insurance. I couldn't believe the statement from her little mouth. So I reacted and turned off the television for a week... at least.
Day 2 has gone by and I now wonder did I over react? Part of me is so sick of commercials and television.
My little rant is over...

Rant away... it never hurt a child to miss a few days of tv. Maybe she will forget about it. If you are lucky enough to be home with you child during the time the tv takes a break, you might really learn some cool new things together. No matter what . . . always exert your right to rant!

Emily- It's amazing what they do and don't pick up isn't it! I frequently dream of cutting the cord on the TV but my husband would rebel. Soo...I have thought of instituting a no TV No Computer time in the evening until Nora goes to bed. At least then we would be doing family things.

We have no TV service at home - when it went digital we choose not to get the converter box so we can't watch TV even if we wanted too. We do still have our DVD & VCR players so we can watch movies when we want to. We don't have internet service at home either so we have a pretty sheltered life at home. We do have internet service here at work and I do get on at lunch and if I work late I will play when I'm through.
It's just my hubby and I at home now and just a decision we made together.

that is so funny! there are commercials that stop me dead in my tracks and i am not a tv watcher,but they make them so darn funny and catchy-i'm sure she will be ok wether the tv is on or not

We have the same problem at our house! We try not to let our son watch too much TV, but it's amazing what they pick up from any time at all. My son will want whatever they're selling on whatever commercial is on at the time. So we try to limit the watching to Nick Jr, or PBS. Stations that don't really have commercials. You don't realize how powerful ads really are until you have a small child at home. We have talked about getting rid of the TV altogether but we haven't had the nerve yet. :)

Emily,
We let the kids watch Sprout, Nick JR, and Nicklelodeon. The kids were begging me for toys/products on a daily basis and I'm not kidding. At least 3 times a day, I would hear :"Mama, I want..." and then they'd go off into a whole commercial spiel. Well, that plus all of the junky programs we were paying for pushed me over the edge.
I turned off our TV service almost a year ago and haven't missed it for one second. Not one. We do subscribe to Netflix (we have 2 laptops) and the kids are allowed to watch that and can also play on sites like Sesame Street, PBS, NickJR and Noggin.
let me tell you, I sure haven't missed paying that monthly bill, either!

I don't know how old the rest of you guys are, but I'm of *an age* to remember commercials like:

This is to say - we REMEMBER this stuff forever! Our impressionable minds as children... and we watched very little TV as kids!
I've got 2 young ones, and I'm with you guys on wanting to kill the TV. We don't have cable TV, but DH just replaced our old boxy TV with a flatscreen, and ordered streaming DVR, and Netflix... the kids would just as soon sit and stare at TV all bloody day long! It makes me scream (at least internally). So, since I can't control whether or not Daddy turns the TV on at night, I can at least control our days - they get TV before 8AM and then it's OFF! Sometimes they can watch Wild Kratts at 4:30PM, depending on the day's behavior and how well they did with homeschooling stuff. Thank God for PBS with no toy commercials!

| I had to ad my two cents about TV and children. The best summer I ever had, growing up, was when our television went out and we didnt have the money to buy another one. My mom loaded my brother and I into our little red wagon and we walked to the library which was in the center of our town. We would load our wagon with books(we were allowed 20 each!) and spent the next week pouring over them. I learned so much that summer! My favorite story was Journey from Peppermint Street...my mom would fall asleep reading it to us..always at the most exciting parts! I still live in the same town..I finallly remembered the name of the book and checked it out to read to my own children. I was absolutely delighted to open the book and find the very same card, my mother had signed to check out the book, stuck inside the envelope on the inside cover. I showed my children her signature and where we had renewed it several times. The dates were handwritten on the card as well....1973. I explained to the librarians the significance of the book, showed them the signature card and was so happy when they told me they would like for me to keep it. It is one of my treasures! I am thankful for that summer...such pleasant memories of time spent with my mom and brother...journeys to other lands...finding out more about the world...afternoons spent on a quilt reading to my dolls...my imagination released.... Something that television couldn't give to me and what television sadly takes away from families today. |

Well, the television is back on today, just for Sesame street on the local public station and then it was off again, too much work to ignore. My DH is watching his cartoons on the computer. Well, we do the best we can.

Wow, Emily - that is something, isn't it? When my son was little, we were out buying sneakers. He was only four years old, and he insisted on Sketchers, which, of course, I was NOT buying. Finally I asked why? He said, "Because they make you jump higher and run faster, Mommy!" I couldn't believe it. We had a little talk. Then I started watching the television even more closely than I had already been doing. I saw stuff on the children's cartoons that made my skin crawl. One instance that sticks out especially: "The Jetsons", a show I had watched when I was a kid, had a newer version now, with new episodes. One actually had a scene where a woman was upset because Astro was "molesting" her dog. I thought, "God, why on EARTH is that a term they would even use or and experience they would even expose children to?" I started to notice a lot of other questionable comments and ideas in so much of the children's programming, that we just stopped watching any of it for a very, very long time. One really disturbing trend I saw was how idiotic and stupid parents were being portrayed. That kind of thinking sinks in, you know what I mean? It's in the programs, the commercials, the movies... He really liked history and science programs from a young age, too - which was amazing to us - but even some of those were questionable at times. The whole thing was just such an eye-opener. We are all bombarded with so much "junk" we don't even realize it. You certainly cannot shield your child from everything, of course. And it doesn't get any easier as they get older, either. As kids develop relationships with other children or enter school-type settings, they are exposed to everything the other children watch and take in on a daily basis, just through interacting with them. Your hair will curl at the things that come out of your child's mouth and the things she will ask. The best thing to do is to keep lines of communication open with your child and develop a trust early by discussing everything - within her maturity level and ability of understanding, of course. You'll be very pleased with the relationship that develops between you and your child, as well as the observations and choices she makes as she grows! The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." I've found that to be very, very true! Hugs to all - Nini

And we think that the destruction of the American family ISN'T influenced and encouraged by TV?? It does, in fact, curl your hair to think about.
