Hay Ya'll, I have been reading all the threads searching for uses for the strings we pull to open our feed bags. No luck yet...I suppose it could be used for tatting, if I knew how. I also save it and use it in the garden to tie things up but what else????
The plastic bags have been made into shopping bags but they have so many more uses. Some ideas: Covers for chicken runs to keep out rain and snow and blazing sun(someday soon). Cover hay bales and fire wood stacks, lawn furniture, green house shade. The list goes on and on. Use them like you would any tarp or canvas. Some applications will require sewing and others you can use duct tape to join together and secure. Last year I put newspaper and cardboard down between the raised beds in my garden but I may use these feed bags this year (Caution: Slippery when dewy or wet.) Join them together to make a large area to put leaves on to drag to compost pile or burn location. Put them down on ground to work under cars/tractors. Line back of car so carpet won't get soiled by tools and oily cans. Oh heck, I'm even thinking about a poncho or rain coat and rain pants. I hate to trash anything and have become obsessed with making my "foot print" very tiny. This takes work but we can do it. We are FARMGIRLS so we can do ANYTHING! Love and Prayers, Daizy

We used some of ours as insulation to line our milk house. It works great to block out the wind.

Daizy, the string works great for re-sewing buttons on to coats and work pants. It doesn't fray or tear like normal thread, so it holds up really well.

OR you could take the string and start rolling it into a ball. Up in northern KS is a tourist attraction, THE WORLDS LARGEST BALL OF STRING!!

Daizy, I am in the over 70 group ( can't use the word crowd) I don't think I'll be saving my string either. But you would be surprised how many times I need a piece of string and have to cut one from a "store bought" ball of string. LOL

I have your address but cyberspace doesn't have pony express...or I'd send you a bundle. I suppose we will HAVE to meet on the Trace so I can bring it to you. By then I'll have a medium size ball becoz I have been feeding the weiners (21 calves) a bagged feed and then Chick feed, horse feed, dog and cat food ... did I miss anything??....Does anyone want the plastic bags? I may have a few....

I take those bags and sew shopping bags out of them. Very durable and everyone loves them! :0) I have also thought of sewing them together for a tarp. Great ideas.

Our feed just this month has been changed from paper to plastic.
What a good idea on the tarp. I suppose you just save and sew together until you have the needed size?
We're always needing tarp on our half acre!
There's a girl in my stain glass class who has a book bag made from the same type plastic bag. and, it has a zipper!

ok guess I am cheap but I used those plastic bags to "paper " the inside of my coop.
Looks kinda funky but the girls seem to like it:)

| boy do I feel silly not having thought of a use for them until reading this. I'm going to start saving all of my feed bags & turning them into more useful items! We always need tarps. I can't believe i never thought of such a thing. Good idea! |

Great to read all of your ideas...My friend, Jan,...in our art group, sews them into the neatest shopping bags and has given each of us one on our birthdays. They are great and really strong. Most have either horses, dogs, cats, birds, etc. on them and just make the cutest bags.
I am going to start reusing the string also...great idea.

| The kids tore the bags open and went sledding on the hill behind the barn this winter. Gave the feed sacks an extended life. They held up remarkably well |

Here's another...we used the poly bags for weed barrier for some paths we made in the garden. I use the paper bags to line my parrot's cage. When you cut open a paper bag, you will get about 8 layers of paper. Nice! Also would likely make great paper for kiddos to draw/paint on.

I turn them into shopping bags, laundry bags (specifically for in the garage so my husband's shop cloths can be rewashed and reused instead of tossed!) I even use them for empty soda cans for parties and for recycling things. I think they would make super cute gift bags too! The tarp is a great idea! I usually use newspaper in the garden but I was thinking, I bet the plastic bags could be used as a mulch for tomatoes and melons instead of the expensive plastic tarp mulch you can buy. Sure its not black or red but still, it will serve the same purpose!

the tarp and chicken coop cover is a great Idea! I think I am going to make a chicken coop quilt for the front of the coop yard to keep the driving snow out. They will love it when they don't have to huddle in the coop all day.
I want there to be no peasant in my kingdom so poor that he cannot have a chicken in his pot every Sunday.
