Did any of you guys see that adorable green gingham "chaps apron" that Linda from Wisconsin sent in to MJF - page 8 of the new Feb-March issue?? That is TOO cute!!
I could sure see those being handy for working in the garden, especially with reinforced knees!! I LOVE them!!
Am I the only one who needs a full apron in the kitchen though? Maybe I'm just naturally a bit messy while cooking, but it seems like I'm always splattering something. I have a couple of totally adorable half-aprons (one made out of an old pair of jeans!) but I definitely don't use them while cooking! I use the jeans pair while we're homeschooling, as a convenient place for a pencil, hankie, etc...
What about ya'll???

My first offical pattern project (I sew by sight - curtains, pillows, etc...) was a full apron. I can't give you the details just now, but it had a full front and full back - hitting me mid-thigh (I'm tall - 5'10" and I made the short one!) I LOVE IT! I made one for work (I'm an elementary librarian, and books, believe it or not, are dirty) and another for home. I'll look up the pattern details tonight and attach something tomorrow for those of you who are interested. It was fun, had miles of biased tape, but introduced me to the love of machine sewing.
Yes, I'm messy and invariably, on those short hectic church nights I splatter something on me that an apron would totally prevent. I totally love it and am on the lookout for new fabric for another one!

Hi! I SOOOoooo want a "pair-of-chaps" apron!!! Just think of how fun it could be for doing things that warrant a "higher" level of "comfort" between the legs - like climbing a fence, for example....and the reinforced knees for gardening? that is SO cool! Any good ideas as to how to make one? I'm, I'd say, a beginning/intermediate machine "sewist."

Holly - I'd love to see more about your apron!!
Libbie - this morning I just finished making a "cowgirl apron" of sorts... I'd been making aprons for me and friends using old cowgirl shirts I had (and purchased used at thrift stores), turning them into regular full-length aprons (using the backs as the skirt part, and part of the sleeves/cuffs for a nice big pocket - another apron requirement for me!)... but seeing the great chaps-apron idea, I thought HMMMM! I took an old pair of Wranglers from after my kids were born (woohoo, they're too big finally!) and cut them so I now had a front and a back side... using the front half, cut off the legs below the knees... and used another cowgirl shirt up top. So when you put it on, even if you're wearing less-adorable farmgirl clothes, it looks like you're wearing a nice cowgirl shirt and jeans!! Even made a "daisy-mae" rope "belt"... it's by NOOOOOOOOOOO means perfect but it's fun!
I've got some photos of my original cowgirl aprons on my blog, if anyone is interested - haven't taken any of this new one yet. I'm not sure I'd go into "full production" and make more than one of them, but, I do kinda like it!!

Ladies,
Finally! I'm new to all of this and it's been a trial so far! Here's the details on my long home apron. It's a Simplicity pattern from my local Wal-Mart - fabric too. The pattern #3818 requires 4 pkgs of double-width 1/2" biased tape. My WM isn't great on keeping notions stocked, so it's helped determine the fabric I've used. I'm not advanced enough yet to make my own biased tape! Anyway, after working all morning, I've finally loaded my pictures to a Flickr account and posted them publically. I hope you can see them. The pattern cover and my home apron is shown. I'm hoping (fingers crosssed) this is the only address you'll need.
