I used AFM a lot in the past, but haven't ordered in many months. I'm thinking about ordering for January. What are your thoughts? What has your experience been?

i have only ordered once- they were wonderful- the volunteers- and the product was great; however, i live alone and don't eat things like french fries---
i did purchase one of the steak pkgs and was quite pleased....i will probly do so again once i eat more of my freezer down.

Thank you for your suggestion of Angel Food on my post. We're going to order from them this month. It seems like a really great deal, and a wide variety of food that I don't have to shop for while feeling sick!

You're welcome, RueAnn! My experience has been this: I would say that 95-98% of the food is great, however, there are a few items which we did not enjoy. Examples being the frozen turkey patties (we used them for catfish bait...so they weren't wasted, lol!), and the lasagne dinner. It should also be noted that AFM changes vendors with some frequency, so these items may be from a different vendor now.
I loved the fruit and veggie box. I think one time (out of about 8 times) I had a moldy orange or something like that, but apparently you can tell the host site and they should replace it the next month. This is just hearsay, because I didn't actually do that. Anyway, I was also pleased that the majority of the foods are sourced from US and Canada.
The steaks are small (usually 8 oz.), and while I didn't grill them, I did use them as Swiss steaks, or chopped them up for chili, or sliced them for stir fry. I have read some reviews and some people have said that they are gristly (or just nasty), which I just did not find to be true. There was a tendon in some that can easily be cut out, just as the ligament in chicken tenderloins must also be removed.
The shelf stable milk is so handy...if you accidentally run out of milk it is a great replacement to have.
I am going to see if I can donate the eggs, as I do not eat anything but my farm eggs. Any unclaimed boxes are donated to the local food pantry, so I don't see this as being a problem, really. You can also purchase boxes to donate, too.
January is always a slim month for us moneywise, and last year was a lot worse. I was very glad to have AFM! Another thing about it is that it keeps you away from the grocery and this prevents impulse buys which have really been getting me here lately. Of course, you do still have to go and get your dairy products if you eat them, and bread if you don't bake it. However, I get those products from our local health food store (which I love) and I don't do much impulse shopping in there.
One reason we stopped using AFM was that the host site had taken the time back really early in the morning, and we have to drive into town, and across town to get the food. I see that they have gone back to the original 11am time slot which is a LOT more do-able on a Saturday for me! Another reason was that for a couple of months, there was more and more processed food in the signature box, but I see that this month, there are only a couple of items which I will try and donate.
Another complaint from some people is that they say they can get it cheaper at Aldi's. Well, we don't have an Aldi's and likely never will! :0)
So, that's what I think about it. I'll be placing an order this month!

I have tried it, but it has been some time ago. I have to say the food was good, however, I didn't use some of it, but you can give it to someone who will. For the money you spend, if you don't have to travel far to pick it up, the price is quite good. I have known many who avail themselves to it and have been very satisfied. The food is always frozen properly or packaged well, as is fresh.
Today is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.

Like others have said, we are able to use most things in the box and what we don't like for one reason or another we donate to our food pantry. But, the fruit/vegetable box is great and a great value too. Fresh fruits and vegetable costs are hard on our budget sometimes. I have certainly learned to use foods that I don't usually buy - like tortillas - which has been good for us to for some variety while keeping the budget.

| Our church is a host site and our 4-h club goes up and carries groceries to the cars for those needing help has a community service project. |

I think it is a great program. Like I said, it sure did help in lean times. If you have never tried it for yourself, give it a go and try it out :0) We are on a quest this year to really cut back as much as possible. I didn't do so great in 2010!
Alee, I think that is it a great thing for a community to have, especially with things being the way they are. It's also a great idea to have local clubs volunteer. :0)

We did AFM right after our first was born. At the time I was working 12+ hours a day at the office and so was my husband and we had a new baby. Needless to say alot of food was donated. My husband and I enjoyed it when we got the food. I wasn't very happy with the amount of pork we got every month and it ended up sitting in the freezer until I would swap with a coworker.
Overall I was happy with the service and the people, just make sure you buy a month when you will eat the food.
